Historia
Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better? In The Midnight Library, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision.

Beautiful writing, predictable story
Revisado: 06-24-24
Very beautiful passages. I loved the style of writing. The story was very predictable. It was good, but I didn’t love it like I wanted to.

Historia
PhD candidate Phoebe Walsh has always been obsessed with true crime. She's even analyzing the genre in her dissertation—if she can manage to finish writing it. It's hard to find the time while she spends the summer in Florida, cleaning out her childhood home, dealing with her obnoxiously good-natured younger brother, and grappling with the complicated feelings of mourning a father she hadn't had a relationship with for years.

Meh.
Revisado: 02-24-24
I chose this book for our book club’s February read and wish I hadn’t. Most of us gave it a 2-3 star rating. It was fine, but the pacing is weird, the characters are all very surface level other than the main character, and the main character just treats everyone horribly and they all just kind of say “Oh that’s ok it’s just how you’ve always been!” and move on. The story had great bones, but it just wasn’t filled out enough for me.

Historia
True crime writer Wylie Lark doesn’t mind being snowed in at the isolated farmhouse where she’s retreated to write her new book. A cozy fire, complete silence. It would be perfect, if not for the fact that decades earlier, at this very house, two people were murdered in cold blood and a girl disappeared without a trace.

Predictable but fun read
Revisado: 01-25-24
My book club read this as our January 2024 pick and almost everyone enjoyed it. We got really lucky to have a massive snowfall the day before our meeting, and we had a fun pajama party theme. The vibe was so fun.
Some of us figured out the mystery early on in the story, but it was so well-written and suspenseful that we didn't mind. Others were very surprised with the story. It's a very plot-driven book, not character driven. Once we started to unpack it, a few of us felt like there were some holes in the story that weren't explained. Overall though we really enjoyed it.

Historia
Masterfully blending elements of psychological suspense and true crime, Jessica Knoll—bestselling author of Luckiest Girl Alive and the writer behind the Netflix adaptation starring Mila Kunis—delivers an “unflinching and evocative” (Laura Dave, New York Times bestselling author) thriller in Bright Young Women. The book opens on a Saturday night in 1978, hours before a soon-to-be-infamous murderer descends upon a Florida sorority house with deadly results. The lives of those who survive, including a sorority president and key witness, Pamela Schumacher, are forever changed.

Confusing timeline and bad narration
Revisado: 01-15-24
I loved the story and the writing is beautiful. But the timeline was very hard to keep straight for me. Some chapters set in the seventies would reference future events for the character, for example. Paired with multiple narrators and one narrator set in multiple time periods, it made it difficult to follow and I had to reread parts sometimes. That’s said, there are some really beautiful passages.
The narration was not great; it was very robotic, which made it difficult to follow the longer descriptive bits.

Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. “The best of all the Greeks”—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles’ mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.

Beautiful beautiful beautiful.
Revisado: 08-27-18
This story is meant to be heard. It was heartbreakingly beautiful. Patroclus describes Achilles with such love and passion that even the horrible actions of Achilles can’t lead you to hate him. Even though it’s meant to be a tale of Achilles, it’s also very much a tale of Patroclus and Achilles and their love. I’m sure I’ll listen to this again and again and again.

Historia
One of Jane Austen’s most beloved works, Pride and Prejudice, is vividly brought to life by Academy Award nominee Rosamund Pike ( Gone Girl). In her bright and energetic performance of this British classic, she expertly captures Austen’s signature wit and tone. Her attention to detail, her literary background, and her performance in the 2005 feature film version of the novel provide the perfect foundation from which to convey the story of Elizabeth Bennet, her four sisters, and the inimitable Mr. Darcy.

Where does Pride and Prejudice rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This is not my favorite audiobook, but I will say I enjoyed it. I have always struggled with Pride and Prejudice. I've always felt like it's a book a *should* like, but I never could force myself through it (even though I love TV shows, movies, and other books similar to it). The audio was great and I was finally able to finish this story -- and actually enjoy it!

A moving coming-of-age story set in the 1900s, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn follows the lives of 11-year-old Francie Nolan, her younger brother Neely, and their parents, Irish immigrants who have settled in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. Johnny Nolan is as loving and fanciful as they come, but he is also often drunk and out of work, unable to find his place in the land of opportunity.

A tree grows in brooklyn
Revisado: 10-29-17
I read this book for the first time when I was graduating college, and I fell in love. This is the second time I've read it, after becoming a single mother who is working hard to provide for my child. I took so much more away from this book the second time that I never even picked up on the first time around. The narrator grew on me quickly and brought my favorite book to life. My only complaint is that sometimes the music breaks were awkward and came at inappropriate times, which broke up the flow of the story.

7th grade
Revisado: 10-27-16
I downloaded this because my coteacher and I are getting ready to read this with our 7th grade ELA classes. I had never read it before and needed to get through it quickly. I really enjoyed the book and I'm so excited to share it with my students. However, I was a little disappointed with the narrator. There were many breaks in the chapter and no pauses to indicate those breaks. It made the performance really jumpy and quick, which made it hard to follow when perspectives shifted. I found myself skipping back multiple times to listen a second or third time in order to clarify what I was hearing. It was made easier when I read along with the audio, but that wasn't always an option. I had hoped to use this recording in my class and plan to try it out, but I worry it will confuse some students and I may end up reading it to them myself instead.

The Girl with All the Gifts
Revisado: 10-13-16
Where does The Girl with All the Gifts rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This is one of the best audible books I've heard. I purchased it during one of those awkward periods between credits because I had finished my last book and this was a daily deal. I didn't anticipate an audiobook that I paid $4 for to be as great as this was.
What about Finty Williams’s performance did you like?
Everything! The performance MADE the book. I have been seeking out books read by this narrator specifically because of this performance.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
There were many times that I laughed aloud while listening to this book. I didn't cry, but there were times that I was extremely anxious over the events unfolding.
Any additional comments?
The first hour or so starts off a little slow because there's a lot of foundation being laid. However, I felt the author did a great job of letting the background of the story unfold throughout the book instead of bombarding me with the information all at once. About an hour or two into the book, when the junkers attack the base, the story was really intense. I felt as if I were listening to the climax of the book at the beginning of it. The rest of the book did not disappoint. The action scenes were fast-paced, and everything in between kept my attention. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
