Historia
If you were black in America at the start of the Revolutionary War, whom would you want to win? In response to a declaration by the last governor of Virginia that any rebel-owned slave who escaped and served the King would be emancpated, tens of thousands of blacks voted with feet, escaping to fight beside the British. Originally designed to break the plantations of the American South, this military strategy instead unleashed one of the great exoduses in American history.

Historia
In the aftermath of World War II, Prussia - a centuries-old state pivotal to Europe's development - ceased to exist. In their eagerness to erase all traces of the Third Reich from the earth, the Allies believed that Prussia, the very embodiment of German militarism, had to be abolished. But as Christopher Clark reveals in this pioneering history, Prussia's legacy is far more complex.

Great history! Fascinating research! Well written! But the narrator butchered all the German words which was annoying.
Revisado: 12-19-24
The narrator was ok, but he was terrible in pronouncing the many German names and words.

Historia
How does a nation recover from fascism and turn toward a free society once more? This internationally acclaimed revelatory history of the transformational decade that followed World War II illustrates how Germany raised itself out of the ashes of defeat and reckoned with the corruption of its soul and the horrors of the Holocaust - and features over 40 eye-opening black-and-white photographs and posters from the period.

Interesting and important stuff!
Revisado: 10-01-22
With all the focus on WW2 the aftermath in Germany gets little attention. This book is an important exploration of this cultural and political history. Economics gets little mention.
The narrator does a good job generally, but he butchers German pronunciations totally. That is quite annoying for a German speaker since German words appear in every other sentence.

Historia
In 1683, an Ottoman army that stretched from horizon to horizon set out to seize the "Golden Apple", as Turks referred to Vienna. The ensuing siege pitted battle-hardened Janissaries wielding 17th-century grenades against Habsburg armies, widely feared for their savagery. The walls of Vienna bristled with guns as the besieging Ottoman host launched bombs, fired cannons, and showered the populace with arrows during the battle for Christianity's bulwark.

What did you love best about The Enemy at the Gate?
The detail and nuance about Turkish-European tensions and he military history were great!

Historia
For over 1,000 years England has had a monarchy, and though the line of succession did not always pass smoothly, it has almost always been continuous. England has more often been faced with the claims of competing kings and queens than with a period of no monarch at all.

Good but super brief summary of Cromwell's Life
Revisado: 11-25-16
Did Saethon Williams do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
This "book" is so brief that the characters don't really get much detail.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Oliver Cromwell?
No
Any additional comments?
This is like the Cliff's Notes version. This is high school level history.
