Historia
What’s in a cloud? Did you know that water vapor is invisible and actually lighter than dry air? What separates a tropical storm from a winter blizzard? And what exactly is El Niño? Elliot Rappaport, a professional captain of traditional sailing ships, has spent three decades at sea, where understanding weather is crucial to the safety of vessels and their crews. In Reading the Glass, he offers a sailor’s-eye view of the moving parts of our atmosphere and unveils the larger patterns it holds: global winds, storms, air masses, jet streams, and the longer arc of our climate.

Scientific sea stories
Revisado: 11-20-23
Captin Rappaport does a phenomenal job in combining an excellent science lesson that anyone can understand with the excitement and majesty of the sea. The only thing I can suggest is that in future prints, come with a warning that its’s going to make you want to pack your sea bags and climb aboard, either a tall ship like the Robert C. Seamans, or the cozy accommodations aboard the Schooner Bowdoin.

Combining vibrant novelistic storytelling with extensive research, interviews, and previously unpublished accounts, Simon Parkin describes for the first time the role that women played in developing the Allied strategy that, in the words of one admiral, "contributed in no small measure to the final defeat of Germany." Rich with unforgettable cinematic detail and larger-than-life characters, A Game of Birds and Wolves is a heart-wrenching tale of ingenuity, dedication, perseverance, and love, bringing to life the imagination and sacrifice required to defeat the Nazis at sea.

Historia
Can a young war correspondent find herself and follow her heart? In this work of historical fiction, 20-something Annabella “Annie” March arrives in France in 1944 intending to write about the war. Soon, however, Annie begins to distance herself from her sometimes-mentor, sometimes-rival - the great Martha Gellhorn - and Gellhorn’s larger-than-life husband, the novelist Ernest Hemingway. She turns to photography in the hopes of making her own name and, to her delight, discovers that images come more easily than words.

In peacetime, a new enemy readies a strike not only at America's territory, but at the heart of her economy, and National Security Advisor Jack Ryan must prepare an untested president to meet the challenge.

Historia
San Francisco's Laguna Honda Hospital is the last almshouse in the country, a descendant of the Hôtel-Dieu (God's hotel) that cared for the sick in the Middle Ages. Ballet dancers and rock musicians, professors and thieves - "anyone who had fallen, or, often, leapt, onto hard times" and needed extended medical care - ended up here. So did Victoria Sweet, who came for two months and stayed for 20 years. Laguna Honda, lower-tech but human-paced, gave Sweet the opportunity to practice a kind of attentive medicine that has almost vanished.

great!!!
Revisado: 08-30-18
what I like about this book, is how well it flows. It's hard to do that when you have a story that spans over several decades and has implications even to the modern-day. this book offered me a new perspective on a story I had heard in pieces before. If you have read the Patrick O'Brian Aubrey Maturin series and I thoroughly recommend this book as a companion!

excellent spy novel!
Revisado: 04-23-18
I thought it was excellent! it's marketed as a children's book. And the only thing that makes it so is that she dumb down the Gestapo malignancy a bit. if done correctly this would make a wonderful film it would need to be intensified slightly

We Band of Angelsis the story of women searching for adventure, caught up in the drama and danger of war. On the same day the Japanese Imperial Navy launched its surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, it also struck American bases in the Far East, chief among them the Philippines. That raid led to the first major land battle for America in World War II and, in the end, to the largest defeat and surrender of American forces.

When she is 12, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.
