Solid book, new narrorator is not a good fit
Revisado: 08-27-22
Struggled to listen to the new narrorator - limited distinction between characters, strange emphasis during reading.

Not thrilling, just whiny
Revisado: 03-25-19
I don't listen to psychological thrillers very often, but I like mysteries and thrillers and this one had a lot of good reviews so I was hoping this book would at least keep me engaged. Instead I disliked it so much it felt like a chore to listen to the book. It made me very frustrated every time I did. I should have just stopped the book early, but I like to finish all books and I was hoping it'd get better toward the end. Obviously a lot of people enjoyed it, but personally I can't recommend it.
Pros: Interesting premise and flashback stories added interest and distracted from the unbearable main character. Narrator also did a decent job.
Cons: I really couldn't stand the main character. The entire story was just her whining about everything and so many of her actions were too unreal to be something a rational adult would do. It felt like watching a bad 90s teen horror movie where characters always run up the stairs or into a corner. I also felt that the ending fell flat. Given how the story developed toward the end, it could have been a lot more interesting.

Cozy mystery
Revisado: 10-08-18
The book was in the classic detective category, but it's much more if a cozy mystery. For a cozy mystery I'd rate it a 3 star (good), but it's not that I was looking for.

Historia
In 2003, software engineer David Miller left his job, family, and friends to hike 2,172 miles of the Appalachian Trail. AWOL on the Appalachian Trail is Miller’s account of this thru-hike from Georgia to Maine. Listeners are treated to rich descriptions of the Appalachian Mountains, the isolation and reverie, the inspiration that fueled his quest, and the rewards of taking a less conventional path through life. While this book abounds with introspection and perseverance, it also provides useful passages about hiking gear and planning.

Enjoyable listen. Some parts a little drawn out.
Revisado: 08-07-18
Interesting story. I'm not a hiker, but I do enjoy endurance sports and reading about similar persuits and accomplishments. The writer added some tidbits of humor to keep it interesting. However, since I'm not preparing to hike the trail, some of the details were a bit drawn out and I felt that the story could be 2/3 as long and still be as good. Overall an enjoyable listen.

Historia
Welcome to winter in Three Pines, a picturesque village in Quebec, where the villagers are preparing for a traditional country Christmas, and someone is preparing for murder. No one liked CC de Poitiers. Not her quiet husband, not her spineless lover, not her pathetic daughter - and certainly none of the residents of Three Pines. CC de Poitiers managed to alienate everyone, right up until the moment of her death. When Chief Inspector Armand Gamache, of the Sûreté du Quebec, is called to investigate, he quickly realizes he's dealing with someone quite extraordinary.

More of a romance than suspense
Revisado: 07-06-17
This was my first Nora Roberts book so I wasn't sure what to expect, but the suspense part was very predictable and a large part of the book was focused on the girl coming back to her hometown and romance.
While I think the narrator did a good job, I probably wouldn't have purchased the book had I known so much of it would be read in a southern accent and had frequent interruptions of a young child, which I found a bit annoting rather than cute.

Disliked the first half
Revisado: 07-04-17
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
Without spoiling the ending, the end of the book finally had some redeeming qualities. I really disliked the first half of the book and Dorothy's character during the war was overly fake.
Any additional comments?
I really struggled to finish the first half of the book. Dolly's character during the war was so fake and selfish to the point where it turned me off from the book and I wasn't looking forward to listening. I don't like to leave things unfinished though and after making it past the first half, the story finally got better.

Very cheesy
Revisado: 12-01-16
Quick and fun read overall, but I felt that the humor was a little forced and repetitive. It was The characters and events were so over the top that the book was a little cheesy for my taste.
The narration worked well for the story though.
