Thr success story of Ben Carson is a testimony to the wisdom of his mother, who instilled the personal values that helped him become who he us. I love his frequent acknowledgement of that, reflecting a humility that is refreshing.

Deftly blending such genres as mystery, science fiction, and classic literature, Jasper Fforde’s gleefully irreverent New York Times best-selling Thursday Next novels defy categorization. In this sixth installment, the threat of all-out Genre war looms over BookWorld. But with the real Thursday Next retired in the real world, the Council of Genres has no other choice than to tap the fictional Thursday to save the day. Her mission as emissary is to prevent the brewing war—but her task is made more difficult by a hidden foe manipulating events.

Familiar, yet confusing.
Revisado: 06-09-24
I love the Thursdsy Next series for the imagination and creative thinking of the author. This book was full of the familiar characters, yet so convoluted at times it was hard to follow. Still, it was a fun read/listen, and I will keep it to listen to again.

An historic literary event: the publication of a newly discovered novel, the earliest known work from Harper Lee, the beloved, best-selling author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning classic To Kill a Mockingbird. Originally written in the mid-1950s, Go Set a Watchman was the novel Harper Lee first submitted to her publishers before To Kill a Mockingbird. Assumed to have been lost, the manuscript was discovered in late 2014.

Scout has grown up
Revisado: 06-02-24
Harper Lee has a skill of words that stuns me. She doesn't simply describe things or situations, She somehow paints a picture so vivid that it seems you are in the middle if it, feeling every emotion the characters are. This is a powerful story, one not to be missed.

Historia
If Joe and Vicky had known what relocating to a tiny mountain village in Andalucía would really be like, they might have hesitated. They can have no idea of the culture shock in store for them...no idea they'll become reluctant chicken farmers and own the most dangerous cockerel in Spain...no idea they'll help capture a vulture and be rescued by a mule. Will they stay, or will they return to the relative sanity of England?

This charming story of a retired English couple who relocate to a small Spanish village is both interesting and enjoyable. The narrator is excellent, capturing the emotions of the moment in her voice, and bringing the various characters to life. The descriptions of the town and residents manage to bring everything to life.

The characters are fairly well developed. and likeable, which holds the reader's interest as they swing into complex scientific descriptions. The narrator is pleasant to listen to, and has a good range of voices.

A powerful, difficult, and important novel
Revisado: 04-28-24
This book was gripping, a vivid account of an experience few could imagine or have been strong enough to have participated in. The story in Part 1, when Frankie was working at the Evac hospitals, will not be for the faint of heart, and maybe not for many non-medical readers. The author does not flinch in her graphic description of the horrific injuries those hospitals dealt with, hour after hour, day after day. Her vivid writing captured perfectly the intensity and the exhaustion the meducal team would have felt I was a Trauma/Emergency Nurse and Paramedic on a civilian medical helicopter for 28 years, so many of the events described "in country" were familiar. Of course, nothing we saw in the civilian world could remotely compare to the severity of war; but the intensity was real. Our medical helicopter service was founded by two surgeons who returned from Viet Nam with a vision of the benefit of rapid medical transport in the civilian world in rural Oklahoma. Most of our early pilots were Viet Nam vets, and boy, they could fly!
Part 2 was also wrenching difficult in a different way, with the return to civilian life and the reality of the treatment of returning Vets, and the country-wide turmoil. While younger than the protagonist, I was still old enough for that to be very real. Following a storyline of a Vet who derailed and had so much trouble was also powerful, difficult. and very real. Not easy to read, but certainly important. This is still important history, and I am grateful for the author's efforts to bring it to life.
I held back from 5 stars because I found the side story of Frankie's love interest to be really tedious and not furthering the core of the story.
I confess I just fast forwarded through that.

Historia
In 1996, Beck Weathers and a climbing team pushed toward the summit of Mount Everest. Then a storm exploded on the mountain, ripping the team to shreds, forcing brave men to scratch and crawl for their lives. In this powerful memoir, Weathers describes not only his escape from hypothermia and the murderous storm that killed eight climbers but the journey of his life. This is the story of a man's route to a dangerous sport and a fateful expedition, as well as the road of recovery he has traveled since.

Captivating story
Revisado: 04-17-24
To hear first hand about this story was fascinating. I read Into Thin Air years ago, an excellent read, by the way, so I was familiar with Beck's experience. It was interesting to me to get the details, and marvel at the circumstances. Less interesting was the back story of the depression and single minded pursuit of climbing, although it was also part of the whole story. What was compelling was the insight into the psyche of that rare collection of people who will go to the extremes of geographic challenges that mountain climbers will. I admit, there us a little but of envy in me that they have that supreme degree of courage.
