Historia
Sunflower is an only child, and when her father is sent to the rural Cadre School, she has to go with him. Her father is an established artist from the city and finds his new life of physical labor and endless meetings exhausting. Sunflower is lonely and longs to play with the local children in the village across the river. When her father tragically drowns, Sunflower is taken in by the poorest family in the village, a family with a son named Bronze. Until Sunflower joins his family, Bronze was an only child, too.

This book was chosen for a children's book club age 8-12. My son seemed to like the book. I enjoyed it too as it reflects the story of hardship of life, and the struggles of a family especially a little girl. The setting is during the Chinese Cultural Revolution. The book is basically on family life of this little girl and boy. It is a well written fiction book.

Historia
Esperanza Ortega possesses all the treasures a young girl in Aguascalientes, Mexico could want. But a sudden tragedy shatters that dream, forcing Esperanza and Mama to flee to California and settle in a Mexican farm labor camp. There they confront the challenges of hard work, acceptance by their own people, and economic difficulties brought on by the Great Depression. Pam Munoz Ryan eloquently portrays the Mexican workers' plight in this abundant and passionate novel.

Excellent book based on true events
Revisado: 11-26-19
This book was recommended by our Librarian for my son's book club. My son struggled to stay focused because it was about a girls life story. But when I made him see the other side of politics, greed and people's survival struggles, he was better able to relate and finished the book with audio of course. Not easy for an 8 year old to understand, but parent/teacher guidance, it's a good life story for all to learn. Never give up and always have hope.
