I wasn't sure I'd get this book, since it said book three of the series - I don't like to start at the end. But since the other ones are not at Audible right now, I said what the heck and downloaded this book. If you like classical historical fiction (I do very much), than it's a good choice. An extra bonus is it takes place during the First Punic War - against Carthage, but before Hannibal, so most people won't be familiar with the events that shaped the Western Mediterranean world.
There is a lot of action in the book, espically naval operations which determined the outcome First Punic War, something I have not really seen covered very well in classical fiction before. It does a good job of covering the politics that was driving both the Roman and Carthaginian worlds.
The storyline is easy to follow and the characters are developed enough to keep your interest. And the book stands on its own, you will not have to have listened to the other two books (if they become available, which I hope they do) to be able to follow the storyline. So if you like lots of action, with a fair amount of backstabbing thrown in for good measure you can't miss with this recording.
The narrator, whom I never heard before, Eamonn Riley, was excellent. He did espically well during the action segments of the book, you felt like you were part of that action.

I've become a fan
Revisado: 03-05-10
If you like the Classical period, and enjoy a good detective novel than this series by John Roberts fill that bill quite nicely. I have now listened to the first two book in this series and both are excellent, covering the Republic period just prior to Caesar making his move for power. The author has done his historical research - Rome is a lively city that is both complex and dangerous. The mob rules the city and if you can work it through bribe, public opinion, etc., you control them. It's a dangerous balanceing act that could cost you everything. Simon Vance the narrator is an excellent choice, expecially his rendering of the main characer Decius Caecilius Metellus. I don't know how many books are in the series, but I look forward to them.

Never a dull moment
Revisado: 03-02-10
I love the classical period and go out of my way to find books on the period. However, it does not happen very offen where you get fast paced action along with historical accuracy. This book does a good job at both - probably because Dr. Sidebottom (I love the name) is a classical professor who makes sure that his level of historical accuracy and faithfulness to what we know of the realities during the period are true. It's brutality, gritty language, the various peoples and religions coming into conflict during a period of turmoil in the latter Roman Empire, all add up to make one hell of a ride! The author all so develops his characters with interesting personalities, there not cardboard cutouts, you care what happens to them. Nick Boulton's narration is excellent, especially the Latin (Roman) and Sassanian (Persian)names and terms. He also keeps the tension at just the right level, its hard to lose interest.

Sweeping Adventure
Revisado: 01-16-10
I picked this book because I had to use my ten dollar credit before it expired, and I hadn't listened to a Western story in years. Just looking for a change of pace, and a fairly quick listen. I made a great uninformed choice . . . I had not read anything by Max Brand, nor listened to any narration by Kristoffer Tabori. The story is very good and pulls you in like any other well crafted tale. However, this story is ment to be read out loud. The combination of Mr. Brand's story and the wonderful rich Western base of Mr. Tabori is magic. This is what you hope your experience of listening to Audible books is like! Get this book - even if you don't consider your a follower of Western's (I don't), you will enjoy this adventure.

Moth was a beautiful planet, the only one with wings - two great golden clouds suspended in space around it. Here was a wide-open world for any venture a man might scheme. The planet attracted unwary travelers, hardened space-sailors, and merchant buccaneers - a teeming, constantly shifting horde that provided a comfortable income for certain quick-witted fellows like Flinx and his pet flying snake Pip.

Good and fun investment
Revisado: 09-07-09
I got this book on a whim . . . one of Audible's penny a minute sales. The unusal title of the book got my attention, so I said what the heck!
To my suprise it was a thoughtful, entertaining, and fairly tense reading, as one seemly unconnected event leads to another. And like all good SiFi the complex events of space travel, etc, are explaided in detail - yet not so complex that we readers can get the jest of how these things work. It was a fun read and I look forward to other books in this series. Also, Stefan Rudnicki (narrator) does a wonderful job of bringing this book to life.

John Maddox Roberts takes listeners back to a Rome filled with violence and evil. Vicious gangs ruled the streets of Crassus and Pompey, routinely preying on plebeian and patrician alike. So the garroting of a lowly ex-slave and the disembowelment of a foreign merchant in the dangerous Subura district seemed of little consequence to the Roman hierarchy.

Revisado: 12-29-08
Too tell the truth I got this book because I'm a big Lindsey Davis fan (the Falco Mystery Series), and felt I needed a "Roman" fix!
I really didn't know what to expect, just hope it was good. And, it was! The author John Maddox did his homework and this book is full of the flavor, smells, life, corruption, etc., that was Rome. So if you want a quick read (listen) of a well crafted detective story then get this book. I'm looking forward to other books in this series.

Havana Nocturne takes listeners back to Cuba in the years when it was a veritable devil's playground for mob leaders Meyer Lansky and Charles "Lucky" Luciano. Thanks to strong ties with the island's brutal dictator, President Batista, the mob soon owned the biggest luxury hotels and casinos and launched an unprecedented tourist boom. But their dreams collided with those of Fidel Castro, Che Guevara, and others.

Excellent book on the Mob
Revisado: 12-29-08
It was a dream that almost came true for organized crime - a country of there own that could of opened the door to the rest of the world.
Like most people, my view of the near take over of Cuba by the Mob, was what I saw in the Godfather Part II. It's a case of the real events being ever better than that great movie. This book is an easy and powerful listen, that is loaded with all kinds of interesting tidbits that keeps you wanting to find more - and the author delivers. This is a very good listen, enjoy!

A suprise like!
Revisado: 12-29-08
I very much enjoy historical fiction, but being a guy I'm not an into the romatic variety! This story along with the first book (The Twentieth Wife) does what good story's do ... they put you into that time and place. I also liked the fact that this strong female character earned her position - in a male dominated world that could not understand how love can make us a stronger, better person, not weaker.
Also, Mughal India with its wealth, intelligence, and corruption will fascinate you. These two books are both beautiful and fascinating and well worth the listen. I originally got these books for my wife to listen too, but I think I enjoyed them as much, if not more than she did!
The Narrator Sneha Mathan does a wonderful job.

Journey in another time
Revisado: 10-20-08
This book transports you to a small village in Turkey (Ottoman Empire)in ther early 1900's. How people of diffrent core beliefs can live together and yes trust each other because they take them for what they are - human. How simple things make life better for us all. However a larger less friendly and less understanding world is just outside their village, and when it arrives everything changes - forever. You walk hand in hand with the characters as they journey through their lives and feel both the joy and sorrow of their changing world.
Wonderfully written and the narration by John Lee is just superb. He makes you feel like your living in this village. I highly recommend!

One of the Better Series
Revisado: 09-30-08
Again Lindsey Davis pulls it off! If you like historical novels - not just those ones about the wealthy, than this series is for you. The author not only gets the authentic feel of classical Rome but fills it with real characters who have both strength and weakness (both male and female). I feel the real strength of this series however is the humor. Yes, it has all the tension and who-done-it, that all first rate mysteries have; but the interaction of the primary characters is priceless. The story's are both easy to listen too and follow. I some time have my time broken-up and can only listen to the book in small chunks - but I have no problem picking up and enjoying the storyline. I would recommend trying out any one of the Falco mysteries.
