The True Story of The Coward Brothers follows two musical brothers – one English, one American, both the illegitimate sons of dubious parentage who may, as they claim to be, "one and half-brothers" – perhaps a reference to the disparity in their height and relative talents.

Humorous but not enough Elvis songs
Revisado: 03-15-25
The concept was great. The story of a songwriting duel brothers in the 50s and 60s was original. They did have snippets of songs they wrote which were recorded by other artist and made being missed by tweaking the lyrics. I just wish we heard a full version of Elvis and the Coward Brothers singing the songs.

Historia
Since the turn of the century, a generation has come of age knowing only war, recession, political gridlock, racial hostility, and a simmering fear of environmental calamity. In the country’s forgotten pockets, where industry long ago fled, where foreclosures, Walmarts, and opiates riddle the land, death rates for rural whites have skyrocketed, fueled by suicide, addiction, and a rampant sense of marginalization and disillusionment. This is the world the characters in Stephen Markley’s brilliant debut novel, Ohio, inherit. This is New Canaan.

Confusing as an audiobook
Revisado: 06-08-24
The story jumped around from timeline to timeline from character to character, making it more difficult to follow when listening to the book. The writing is fine very descriptive The story is a journey into a depressing segment of America. They’re not any characters that you can root for. Lots of tragedy and loss. It is a segment of society that Trump has tapped into.

Deep down here by the dark water lived old Gollum, a small slimy creature. I don’t know where he came from, nor who or what he was. He was Gollum—as dark as darkness, except for two big round pale eyes in his thin face. He had a little boat, and he rowed about quite quietly on the lake; for lake it was, wide and deep and deadly cold.

And not from the dragon or hobbit pipe. First off the narrator Andy Serkis was fantastic. The pacing of the plot kept the listener engaged. I admit I tried to get into this book when I was in high school in the late 70’s but never was able to get past Chapter 1 . Of course I have seen the movies but this is different this allows the wonderful writing of JR Tolkien to shine. Can’t wait to start Lord of the Rings

It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

Haters will always hate
Revisado: 06-19-23
If you are a believer of the tabloid, British press, this book is not for you Some people‘s complaints that he was a pampered royal doesn’t ring true if you really listen to the book. He is really honest, sometimes to a disturbing level of reveals. I don’t feel the frozen penis story was crucial, but again he left no story untold. He also does admit that he has had a privilege life. The fact that some of his issues are first world problems are readily admitted. For me, the stray did end up a bit uneven because he had to put in every detail that he could remember. He was brutally honest about his mistakes and personal flaws.
The most touching sections were one surrounding the emotional trauma surrounding the death of his mother in the inability to process or grieve his loss.
He does shine a light on, and on mental health issues of PTSD and anxiety. His approach to his mental health issues well hopefully will lead others to seek assistance.
For me, the most powerful d parts of the book were how the press and his own family treated his wife. The racist trolls out there are absolutely disgusting. And the fact that his own brother and family did not stick up or fight those lies is disturbing. I know that there is still lies. going around about his wife, even my own family members spout misinformation.
If the book leaves you with a mistrust of the press well that’s a good thing.
Here in the United States, just like Great Britain it’s often about stories that provide Clickbait. It’s in these incidences that truth loses.
It’s ultimately a story about family, and it is my hope that one day brothers can reconcile.

Historia
Renée Ballard works the night shift in Hollywood, beginning many investigations but finishing none, as each morning she turns her cases over to day shift detectives. A once up-and-coming detective, she's been given this beat as punishment after filing a sexual harassment complaint against a supervisor. But one night she catches two cases she doesn't want to part with: the brutal beating of a prostitute left for dead in a parking lot and the killing of a young woman in a nightclub shooting. Ballard is determined not to give up at dawn.

A powerful female protagonist…. But no Harry Bosch.
Revisado: 04-18-23
Audible lists the book as a Bosch and Ballard first encounter. That is not right that occurs in the next book Dark Sacred Night. I’m so glad that Connelly gave us a standalone book to begin our journey with her.
Ballard is a refreshing no BS tough detective who has been knocked down to the Late Show. This refers to the overnight shift at the detectives manage. Usually as a form of punishment. Ballard takes on to difficult challenging cases. And like the Bosch books the detail is great.
You can expect the detective to have several personal flaws right into trauma or tragic events in their lives. These events do not change their mission, but tend to focus it. It is great to see a female in charge of her body in life in a book. She is definitely a tough person who I would not what to mess with what? Want her on my team. She is straight shooting and brutally honest.
The way she works is close to Boch so I’m excited to get the next book when I actually get to work together.
The problem with the narrator was that she was too low key for such a strong character

Even better then IQ
Revisado: 12-09-21
IQ was fresh take on the detective character. The first book had two many subplots and the stories jump around to various events. It seemed like the writer had a lot of story ideas and had to fit them all in . Smoke is better because there on central case. There’s still are some side stories but in the end it’s good guys and gals going after bad guys. The increased pace made the story more at a greater rate. I would not be surprised if Amazon Netflix Hulu or someone else doesn’t feature Isaiah in a series. At the least we will be getting other books with IQ

This a series on interviews making for a great into to Chomsky. It ranges from his critics of American intervention and self propagation to the media and even his study of linguistics. He shines a light on the flaws of Jimmy Carter(who did many unchristian acts), Buch,Regan and Clinton. He doesn’t spare other despots in Russia, India China and many other. If you love Chomsky you’ll love this listen. If you don’t know him you’ll love to get to know him. If if you disagree with his conclusions you will be challenged.

Historia
Noted transcendentalist Henry David Thoreau spent two years, two months, and two days chronicling his near-isolation in the small cabin he built in the woods near Walden Pond on land owned by his mentor, the father of Transcendentalism, Ralph Waldo Emerson. Immersing himself in nature and solitude, Thoreau sought to develop a greater understanding of society amidst a life of self-reliance and simplicity. Originally published in 1854, Walden remains one of the most celebrated works in American literature.

Walden and Zen
Revisado: 02-26-21
Two of the books that impacted me in college were Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and Walden. It’s the simple tasks that bring meaning be it fixing a bike chain or measuring the thickness of ice on pond. I know that life for me is a rush. I’m constantly tied to technology I’m les comfortable with silence. The book challenges us unplug and look and listen . The audio book was fine but suggest get the book and add audio companion.

The eternal question of nature vs nurture is at the centre of Dr Diane Buckley’s world. A talented freelance forensic psychologist who has never quite found the key to engaging with people on a casual level, she is drafted in to examine a grisly murder – a body found in a children’s playground.

Revisado: 08-03-20
Reviewers who mention the audio performance are correct. It is sometimes hard to follow and the voices are not distinct enough to distinguish who is talking. It does have a surprising twist at the end . So stick it out if you can. it is a psychological drama but was slow developing. I would have liked them to cus on the psychologist daughter who found the most interesting character in the story.

Billy Todd has always been different. Most people called him odd, and those were the nice people. Though he was born with a learning disability, Billy's parents never allowed him to consider himself disabled. Raised to be self-sufficient, Billy might not be as smart as some, but he was a lot smarter than people realized.

very long with little payoff
Revisado: 07-11-20
The book is over 20 hours long to listen to so you have to be willing to invest of the time. The story premise is fine but underdeveloped. Amazing for for how much time they had to develop the story. It is not really a apocalyptic story of survival but more of one of developing relationships during difficult times. . The narration is in a Southern drawl which also leads to be slower pace. It had to be because it does take place in Tennessee also some of the characters particularly the Native American one was somewhat sterotypical. if you get this book looking for a adventure action novel you will be disappointed . it is much more romantic and it's nature.
