Historia
Ancient Egyptian civilization is so grand our minds sometimes have difficulty adjusting to it. It lasted 3,000 years, longer than any other on the planet. Its Great Pyramid of Cheops was the tallest building in the world until well into the 19th century and remains the only Ancient Wonder still standing. And it was the most technologically advanced of the ancient civilizations, with the medical knowledge that made Egyptian physicians the most famous in the world.

Overall a Great Experience
Revisado: 06-28-22
First off it took a few lectures to adjust to the professors speaking style. much less academic and a little more conversational. I ended up enjoying it, but it was just not what I and become accustomed to from the great courses.
Egypt has such a thrilling and long history that the story was amazing. Where I was left wanting was in two areas. One was dates, not specific dates, just general dates. I've done a dozen or so series on anceint world topics and I like to compare what's going on in one to the other. Dates were sparingly used if at all so after a dozen or so dynasties you have no idea where you are in time relative to the rest of the world. the only real indications come from foreign events that involve Egypt. the second was the details. some of this was undoubetly due to the lack of said details being known, but I felt like I learned about pharaohs and what they built, where they went, major activities they engaged in, but very little substance about them or their direct impact on Egypt. yes they built a temple, but did they have any impact on Egyptian civilization beyond influencing a later pharaoh to build a similar temple? I found myself wanting more substance about these characters.

Professor Harl does it again.
Revisado: 04-30-22
Professor Harl once again takes a subject, that on the outside, appears straightforward and simple yet turns it into a riveting story whose span and impacts you would have never guessed going in.

Professor Harl is Amazing
Revisado: 04-07-22
An absolutely amazing story to tell and no better person to tell it. I have listened to several of professor Harl's series now and it is always a wonderful experience. I actually search him out by name because I know whatever story he is telling will worth my time. Add to that the history of histories greatest figure period and you can't go wrong.

Historia
Centuries ago, Spanish conquistadors searching for gold and new lands encountered a group of independent city-states in Mesoamerica. Sophisticated beyond the Spaniards' wildest imaginings, these people were the Aztecs, the Maya, and related cultures that shared common traditions of religion, government, the arts, engineering, and trade. In many ways more advanced than European nations, these societies equaled the world's greatest civilizations of their time.

Historia
The 25 years between the onset of the French Revolution in 1789 and the Bourbon Restoration after Napoleon in 1814 is an astonishing period in world history. This era shook the foundations of the old world and marked a permanent shift for politics, religion, and society - not just for France, but for all of Europe. An account of the events alone reads like something out of a thrilling novel.

Touched off by a terrorist act in Bosnia and spreading all too quickly beyond the expectations of those who were involved, World War I was an unprecedented catastrophe with a ghastly cost. After this first "total war"-the first conflict involving entire societies mobilized to wage unrestrained war, devoting all their wealth, industries, institutions, and the lives of their citizens to win victory at any price - the world itself would never be the same.

Historia
For much of the past five centuries, the history of the European continent has been a history of chaos, its civilization thrown into turmoil by ferocious wars or bitter religious conflicts - sometimes in combination - that have made and remade borders, created and eliminated entire nations, and left a legacy that is still influencing our world. This 36-lecture series from an award-winning teacher and honored scholar pursues an explanation for this chaos that goes beyond the obvious ones of political ambition, religious intolerance, the pursuit of state power, or the fear of another state's aspirations.

500 Years That Shook the World
- De Jeff en 10-08-14
Great material, needing details.
Revisado: 09-06-20
I really wanted to get a very detailed look at the diplomatic interactions of European powers during this period. What this course gave was a more detailed general look. I was rather hoping for extensive backgrounds on key players and a details breakdown of the backforth interactions that occured between the diplomats and monarchs. Not this courses fault. For thst i probably need a more focused lecture series. However, I did enjoy thia series and learned a lot that will make my more details studies easier to understand within the larger framework.

Historia
Between 1348 and 1715, western Europe was fraught with turmoil, beset by the Black Plague, numerous and bitter religious wars, and frequent political revolutions and upheavals. Yet the Europe that emerged from this was vastly different from the Europe that entered it. By the start of the 18th century, Europe had been revitalized and reborn in a radical break with the past that would have untold ramifications for human civilization.

Power Through
Revisado: 08-26-20
Starts very slow in the begining. This can partly be attributed to the speaker who starts slow, but hits his stride when you get to the reformation. You can tell the reformation is really where this speakers interest and speciality lie. Does a fantastic job of covering the reformation and of organizing all the content in a way that makes it very easy to follow and keep track of. Which given that the reformation took place all across Europe, sometimes simultaneously, was impressive. Ended kind of bland too. The early enlightenment part was interesting, but it felt like the course needed to go on another 10 lectures to give you the impact of the enlightenment as it relates to religion and culture they way he did the reformation part.

What were the forces that led to one of history's most protracted and legendary periods of conflict? How did they affect the three great civilizations that participated in them? And, ultimately, why did they end and what did they accomplish? In these 36 lectures, you'll look at the "big picture" of the Crusades as an ongoing period of conflict involving Western Christendom (we would now call it Western Europe), the Byzantine Empire, and the Muslim world.

Opened my eyes to a world
Revisado: 08-12-20
The overall breadth of the course was far wider than I thought it would be. The focus on Byzantine, Muslim, and European history as a concurrent and interwoven story opened my eyes to an entirely new world view of an era I thought I relatively understood. Excellent lecture series. Am now excited to try the series "The World of Byzantium" by the same lecturer.
