Historia
In this brilliant book, Isabel Wilkerson gives us a masterful portrait of an unseen phenomenon in America as she explores, through an immersive, deeply researched narrative and stories about real people, how America today and throughout its history has been shaped by a hidden caste system, a rigid hierarchy of human rankings. Beautifully written, original, and revealing, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents is an eye-opening story of people and history, and a reexamination of what lies under the surface of ordinary lives and of American life today.

Read it.

This book is a must read for absolutely everyone. I wish I could make everyone I know read it. I’m glad the movie exists, though it pails in comparison to the detail of the book. Must Read.

Historia
Thousands of miles from home, a woman stands on a dark street, peeking through well-lit windows at two little girls. They are the grandchildren she’s never met, daughters of the daughter she has not seen in years. At the center of this mesmerizing story is the woman’s quest to understand how a relationship that began in bliss—a mother besotted with her only child—arrived at a point of such unfathomable distance. Weaving back and forth in time, she unravels memories and long-buried feelings, retracing the infinite acts of parental care.

I enjoyed it.
Revisado: 02-01-24
It’s a really, really slow storyline, but I could definitely feel for the character. The story only becomes truly interesting in like the last hour (of 6+), but I really liked it.
It’s important that we act in our integrity and that we avoid trying to shield our children from the consequences of their actions. This is the thing I loved most about my own parents.

I needed this.
Revisado: 05-25-23
I really needed this book. Will reminds me so much of a puppy I have now. I felt so seen hearing her story. I really needed this memoir. I hope my pup and I make it through to the other side too.

Historia

So therapeutic for me
Revisado: 05-10-23
Every time I’m feeling productivity guilt, listening to some section of this book, helps pull me out of it. Just the title helps me so much. I tell myself. Laziness does not exist. It has made me so much more compassionate towards my students and spouse, and even my daughter and dog (the latter two do nothing to “earn their keep” :P). I hope that I can help counteract the laziness lie in my daughter, and I’m grateful my dog will remain unaffected by it in his lifetime. I aspire now to live my being as compassionate to myself as I am to my dog, whose very existence I think is enough.

Historia
Any given day brings a never-ending list of things to do. There’s the work thing, the catch-up thing, the laundry thing, the creative thing, the exercise thing, the family thing, the thing we don’t want to do, and the thing we’ve been putting off, despite it being the most important thing. Even on days when we get a lot done, the thing left undone can leave us feeling guilty, anxious, or disappointed.

I want to say I’m free
Revisado: 09-20-22
I think the beginning and ending of this book could have been a lot shorter. I think the real gold nuggets are in the middle, and I’m glad I listened for them. I really really enjoyed those nuggets, and I’ll listen to them again. So, I would recommend a listen, and maybe skip the first 30 minutes to an hour…
