As it absorbs data, gains agency, and intermediates between humans and reality, AI will help us to address enormous crises, from climate change to geopolitical conflicts to income inequality. It might well solve some of the greatest mysteries of our universe, revolutionize fields as diverse as medicine and architecture, and elevate the human spirit to unimaginable heights. But it will also pose challenges on a scale and of an intensity that we have never seen.

The First Time I’ve Had an Understanding of AI
Revisado: 05-02-25
In a self-aware way, Dr. Kissinger and his co-authors raise many questions about how this world changing technology will affect our way of life. No answers, but plenty to think about.
Narrator does a nice job on an abstract concept.
I think you will find this is an excellent way to begin to build your framework for observing the rapid evolution that we will see and experience almost daily with AI.

Historia
To trace the history of the twenty-first century so far is to trace a history of unaffordability and shortage. After years of refusing to build sufficient housing, America has a national housing crisis. After years of limiting immigration, we don’t have enough workers. Despite decades of being warned about the consequences of climate change, we haven’t built anything close to the clean-energy infrastructure we need. Ambitious public projects are finished late and over budget—if they are ever finished at all.

Recitation of Problems With No Real Solutions
Revisado: 04-14-25
This book begins with thoughtful analysis of what is wrong with our government (meaning federal, state, and local) in the form of stifling regulations and requirements, punctuated with interesting stories of how the bureaucratic process strangles progress.
There are some riveting stories about the heroic successes which have made America the World Leader in innovation, from invention to wide-spread delivery of life-changing successes like the light bulb (Thomas Edison) and the automobile (Henry Ford).
They even use the story of penicillin, an English triumph, which was discovered by Alexander Fleming, but then effectively commercialized by the US using the discoveries of Howard Florey and Ernest Chain. In this latter situation, penicillin quickly progressed from a small success in the lab to the world-wide phenomenon that saved millions of lives in World War II and later. In this situation, the US government provided limited financial support. This success was accomplished without the regulatory constraints that we experience everywhere today.
The disappointment in the book is in the conclusion, namely that all we need is for the government to "reimagine" itself. The authors seem to believe that their Party can establish a Think Tank and suddenly a leader will emerge who will carry us all into the Promised Land.
The story recognizes the importance of Hero Leaders in making things happen, and today we find many Hero Leaders in our midst, like Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and others.
Surely, the authors have a better solution than suggesting that "government can reimagine itself". Better to challenge their Party to back our Heroes and eliminate the regulations and bureaucracy.

Historia
California is a "model for the nation," Governor Gavin Newsom keeps telling us. "We're following a formula for success." In Califailure, Hilton compellingly captures exactly where this far-left experiment has gone fundamentally—catastrophically—wrong. Great cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Oakland collapsed into squalor as crime and homelessness were allowed to explode. The state that used to pride itself as the home of innovation and opportunity became the state with the worst rate of poverty, highest unemployment, and most hostile business climate in America.

My Vote for Steve Hilton for Governor
Revisado: 04-05-25
This story is nauseating but part of the daily life that Californians experience.
The Bullet Train to almost no-where is just one example of the waste and corruption that is rampant and tolerated. $24 Billion was spent on housing the homeless, but no accounting was made of where the money went.
With the LA Unified School District graduating students with a literacy rate below 50%, and about 50% of voters in the State not paying taxes, the downhill spiral is already well engrained.
It would be refreshing to hear a candidate recommend ways to address the problems. Good Luck, Steve, when you run.

Where do we come from? How did our ancestors settle this planet? How did the great historic civilizations of the world develop? How does a past so shadowy that it has to be painstakingly reconstructed from fragmentary, largely unwritten records nonetheless make us who and what we are?
These 36 lectures bring you the answers that the latest scientific and archaeological research and theorizing suggest about human origins, how populations developed, and the ways in which civilizations spread throughout the globe.

Excellent History of Time Before Records
Revisado: 05-19-24
The Professor really brings this subject to life. He puts you in the middle of the experience.
His enthusiasm for the subject is infectious. His teaching style is also superb. He briefly describes what he will be teaching. Then he brilliantly describes the times and events as best we understand them. Then he summarizes what he said.
It’s a long course, but it flew by fast for me.

Historia
In a field known for startling ideas, the Many-Worlds Interpretation (MWI) of quantum mechanics may take the prize. It holds that parallel to our own world are a large number of other universes, almost identical to ours but with small variations. Copies of each of us inhabit a myriad of these worlds. But they are not us exactly; they share our past history, but they are different people who have unique futures. Although these realms are invisible and can’t communicate with each other, prominent physicists are convinced they must exist.

Complex but not obscure
Revisado: 04-07-24
The Professor made a very complex subject almost comprehensible by a naive layman. He even approached some novel concepts like Free Will in the realm of Quantum Mechanics. It is fascinating how much we know, and don't know, about our World. I really enjoyed the Course and how it has opened my imagination.

Since she was nine years old, Alina Dziak knew she would marry her best friend, Tomasz. Now 15 and engaged, Alina is unconcerned by reports of Nazi soldiers at the Polish border, believing her neighbors that they pose no real threat, and dreams instead of the day Tomasz returns from college in Warsaw so they can be married. Then, as the fabric of their lives is slowly picked apart, Tomasz disappears.

Throughout history, women have played integral roles in family, society, religion, government, war - in short, in all aspects of human civilization. Their contributions have often shaped history and shifted the axis of power for later generations of women. And yet, unearthing their stories from the historical record has often been a challenge. In Powerful Women of the Medieval World, Professor Dorsey Armstrong will introduce you to 10 amazing women who played vital roles in the Middle Ages.

Dorsey Armstrong is a captivating speaker. Her command of languages is so enjoyable to hear. She makes the Middle Ages come alive. I have listened to her other Great Courses and she never disappoints. This course is very flattering to women and identifies aspects of the Middle Ages that one would not naturally consider. I have thoroughly enjoyed it.

Yet he also draws on the most recent historical scholarship and material from Churchill's writings and speeches to make the case that Churchill belongs with Pericles of Athens and Abraham Lincoln as one of the greatest statesmen in the history of democracy.
