I was promised spice but it didn't deliver

I have heard nothing but raving reviews on this book. How good it is. How spicy it is. And honestly... it didn't deliver as much as those reviews have said. There was more detail in the suffering Fayera experienced than there was spice. Almost like the author *wanted* to have it in there, but couldn't bring herself to actually write it. I can appreciate the wanting to leave it to the imagination of the listener, but please don't advertise your book as spicy if it's not.
Honestly the story was only just okay for me. I love the idea that Faye can't lie, except that it's a lie itself. I love the dancing around bargains the character has to do, navigate around things that would be far easier for a literate person to do. But other than that, I find myself wanting more. More of everything. Because without the tension, there's nothing to this very long story. Maybe there's more ahead, and maybe there's not. I'm left questioning only a single thing at the end of this book and it's not a very good driver for me to want the next in the series. Maybe eventually I'll get it. But at this point, I don't think I really will.

The performance is spectacular. With Claire Glover doing a marvelous job at different voices and even accents. The pacing was a little too fast at times, and where there should have been a pause for a change of scene or transition to another character there was literally none. As though it was a run-on sentence. So for that, I take one performance point off.

I love Brooklyn Ann's books and I was ecstatic to see that she was finally getting them in Audio. Although this particular title is not my most favorite of this series, it is still a fantastic read/listen. With the characters being fleshed out with their eccentricities causing them issues that would have been very real had they happened in real life.

I wanted to like this book and I gave it a fair chance. But it's a snooze fest with harassment and suddenly sex because peer pressure.

I looked at the reviews before buying this title. everything looked good, so I gave it a try. I regret it. I honestly couldn't tell you if the story was good or bad because the performance is so piss poor, it's distracting. almost every sentence ends on a down note. it's not monotone, but it's drab and has no feelings. I'm glad I got this on discount because it certainly is going on the shelf of, "I'll likely never finish. " I cannot tell the difference between the characters. no one has written emotion like it's all implied. it's always "he said" or "she said". perhaps the story is good. just not with this performance.

This isn't a good book. Its plot is boring, the characters have no dimension to them, every drop of drama comes from no communication, and it takes until the last 3 chapters for the characters to get their heads out of their butts and talk. Except they don't talk. It's like there is dialog missing both in context and just plain communication. Absolutely every relationship in this book is toxic and reminds me of middle school. Not high school. Middle school.

The excerpt for book 2 honestly leaves me mad, and a sure fire I'm not going to continue this series. It's childish, leaves me with not wanting to even know the plot or characters, and makes me wonder what the author thought when they used that as their intro to the next book.

non spoiler:
Amazing voice work once again from Miss Poole. She delivered the story perfectly.
I love that Denny gets his hea. He certainly deserves it.

I absolutely hate how Prince is displayed as a jerk in this book. I really wanted Maisy to end up with him. Denver practically raised her, so my brain finds it awkward that they end up together. And for Prince to (apparently) end up with a one-off character that's an entitled b-girl makes me feel sad for him. He deserves better than an upstart.
Speaking of deserving better, let's talk about Trevor. Just because he's gay, every book has given him a hard time. Abusive lovers and the like. He absolutely deserves a hea. Is William going to finally step up and be his? For as much as William is trying to help Trevor, it feels like he's trying to deny he's also gay. At least that's how it feels to me.

I found this an easy read. got this book on a sale even though it's part of a series that I've not read anything else in. It wasn't hard to follow along even when the plot I'm assuming back tracked to link to the series.
I did find some of the narration hard to follow, so I had to take several breaks. It also had a lot of filler. Explanation for reader benefit only. Why would you explain what a vampire is or is not to someone you're about to kill? I had to ask that multiple times in the beginning of the book. All that filler would have been better off in the part when J.D. was offered answers with her sit down with Lavos.

I just.. can't. the narrator is just so flat and hard to track that I don't even know what the story is anymore. I started this a while ago, dropped it, and as I was browsing my books, tried to pick it up again. It took less than a minute to take it off my device. I'm sure it's a great read if you can get passed the narrator.

I'm not even sure I can finish this book. the narrator has a nice voice, to be sure. But there's little, and I mean VERY little to no difference in character voices and the story part. it's distracting and makes the book unpleasant to listen to.
