I’m MELTIIINNNGGGG!
Revisado: 09-29-23
It’s crazy how fragile all these negative reviewers are. A horror/thriller written in the time of Covid mentions Covid a lot. How is anyone surprised. And how’s anyone surprised by King’s politics? He’s been out of the closet liberal for years. Also, reality has always been crucial to Stephen King’s horror. Don’t come to him for escapism. As far as I’m concerned, this is an excellent addition to the Holly story and I’ll likely revisit it as much as the other Finder’s Keeper’s lineup, which is often. I loved Will Patton’s narration on the previous novels, but I think Justine Lupe is just as good and won’t hesitate to listen to anything else she reads to us.

Quentin Coldwater is brilliant but miserable. A senior in high school, he's still secretly preoccupied with a series of fantasy novels he read as a child, set in a magical land called Fillory. Imagine his surprise when he finds himself unexpectedly admitted to a very secret, very exclusive college of magic in upstate New York, where he receives a thorough and rigorous education in the craft of modern sorcery.

On my 3rd go round. I personally find these characters very relatable. I love how flawed they are. Especially good after rebinging CS Lewis.

In a sleepy village in the Shire, a young hobbit is entrusted with an immense task. He must make a perilous journey across Middle-earth to the Cracks of Doom, there to destroy the Ruling Ring of Power - the only thing that prevents the Dark Lord Sauron’s evil dominion. Thus begins J. R. R. Tolkien’s classic tale of adventure, which continues in The Two Towers and The Return of the King.

Proud! And Erect!!
Revisado: 06-29-22
What can I say… This is the greatest story ever told being told by one of the most fantastic living narrators. Tolkien can seem dry and long winded but Andy Serkis has sucked me in and there will be no looking back until the final sentence of The Return Of The King. I also own the other version that Audible released a few years back. That version definitely has its charm but the Andy Serkis variation is the one as far as I’m concerned. I wish Audible would use his services more often. Dig in!

Not the best Tim Powers
Revisado: 06-09-22
This felt a little more incomprehensible than most other TP novels in my mind. If you’ve never read a Tim Powers book, skip this for now and go straight to Anubis Gates and On Stranger Tides. I wanted to like this but couldn’t really get behind it. Now I’m going to go listen to Declare again.

Decent story but….
Revisado: 03-10-22
This sounds like what I imagine a very buggy but advanced narration program sounds like. I could listen to the end and I enjoyed the story. The narrator was extremely distracting though. He could pull off many accents and voices but many were super annoying. Personally, I think Audible owes its customers a do over on this one. This could be very enjoyable but I think a lot of listeners won’t have the patience to put up with the wacky narration.

Rain Thomas is a mess. Seven years an addict and three difficult years clean. Racked by guilt for the baby she gave up for adoption when she was 16. Still grieving for the boy’s father who died in Iraq. Alone, discarded by her family, with only the damaged members of her narcotics anonymous meetings as friends. Them, and the voices in her head. One morning, on the way to a much-needed job interview, she borrows reading glasses to review her resume.

More of this please.
Revisado: 03-07-21
This isn’t what I’ve come to expect from Jonathan Maberry. It wasn’t the nonstop action that you get from his Joe Ledger or Rot and Ruin stories. Dare I say it was more of an urban fantasy. The themes were of a grown up nature and I loved the characters and story. I hope that he continues this thread into a series. The biggest pleasant surprise was Emma Galvin’s narration. I think she was perfect for this and now I’m looking for more of her work. Nothing against Ray Porter but I don’t want to hear him butcher a female lead character.

Historia
All through the town of Pine Deep, people are having their most precious memories stolen. The monster seems to target the lonely, the disenfranchised, the people who need memories to anchor them to this world. Something is out there. Something cruel and evil is feeding on the memories, erasing them from the hearts and minds of people like Patty and Monk and others.

YA Literature For Adults
Revisado: 02-27-21
I really enjoyed this. It’s got the feel and themes of a Mayberry YA novel but I don’t think I’d recommend it for teens too much sax and violins. Fun protagonists and truly creepy villain. This isn’t really a Joe Ledger type novel. If you only want that, this might disappoint.

Historia
The Zombie War was the longest and most costly conflict that Britain has ever waged. No one knows the true figure of those who lost their lives in the long years of the war and tragically too many have lost their lives in the years of peace that have followed. Life expectancy is a shadow of what it was and many diseases and ailments that science thought it had eradicated have returned. Many of those who survived the war have since died, taking with them the stories and memories of the most devastating and important struggle that mankind has ever waged.

Not Garbage!
Revisado: 09-23-20
I was tempted to rate story at 4, but then I considered how much absolute trash I’ve stumbled upon in my years long zombie literature obsession. When I considered that, I had to give it 5. It’s not the greatest story but it IS very good. It works as a very nice addition to the World War Z universe in my opinion. I’m very happy to have found this.

Finally!!
Revisado: 08-31-19
I’ve been an Audible member for around 10 years and I’ve been waiting that entire time for this title and the rest of Tim Powers’ work to show up. I am an avid fan of the books of Tim Powers but Expiration Date is possibly my favorite. Depending on the day, of course. Tim’s got so many great ones.
This is a very unique ghost story of a different stripe. No haunted houses here. Just haunted people. The synopsis is perfect so I won’t rehash the plot here. The writing is beautiful and the descriptions are vivid. I have no problem re-listening so as to thoroughly wrap my brain around the imagery. I love it.
I’m not as in love with Bronson Pinchot”s narration or the production values. Too bassy, which makes listening while driving difficult. I’m grateful that Bronson Pinchot has taken on reading Tim Powers books though. Side note.... Simon Prebble’s narration of Declare is spot on. Be sure to check that out.
The books Last Call, Expiration Date, and Earthquake Weather are a trilogy. You can consume Expiration Date and last call in any order but consume them you must before taking on Earthquake Weather. Hopefully Audible will make a note of this when they release the audio version of Earthquake Weather later this year.

Knew what I was getting into based on the Serial Killers books, which I enjoyed. Maybe if that narrator had tackled Draculas I’d have enjoyed it just as much but Eric Dawe destroyed this for me. This will be a returner.
