Historia
The Trees is the story of an American family in the wilderness - a family that "followed the woods as some families follow the sea." The time is the end of the 18th century, the wilderness is the land west of the Alleghenies and north of the Ohio River. But principally, The Trees is the story of a girl named Sayward, eldest daughter of Worth and Jary Luckett, raised in the forest far from the rest of humankind, yet growing to realize that the way of the hunter must cede to the way of the tiller of soil.

Gut Wrenching
Revisado: 04-24-25
Soooooo. When I say I love it. I have to say that I love it because it's excellent writing and gripping storytelling. This story punches you in the face, then kicks you in the gut, and finally says thank's for reading.
I can see why Conrad Richter is a pulizer prize winner, and these stories are truly a work of literary genius, but wow! You will feel the feels.

Historia
In the days and months after Pearl Harbor, the lives of Japanese Americans across the continent and Hawaii were changed forever. In this unforgettable chronicle of war-time America and the battlefields of Europe, Daniel James Brown portrays the journey of Rudy Tokiwa, Fred Shiosaki, and Kats Miho, who volunteered for the 442nd Regimental Combat Team and were deployed to France, Germany, and Italy, where they were asked to do the near impossible. Brown also tells the story of these soldiers' parents, immigrants who were forced to submit to life in concentration camps on U.S. soil.

a story we must all hear
Revisado: 02-13-25
Well written? Of course. But that does not do justice to the book. the excellent crafting of so many individual experiences into a grand tapestry of the cost and impact of american internment camps during ww2 and the amazing people who despite being labeled as enemy aliens stayed loyal and supportive of the USA while dealing with their own conflicts is a story that all people must hear.
I would go so far as to say, this should be requited reading for schools.

The first time the movie was better.
Revisado: 10-12-24
The biggest problem with this book is that every single character is utterly dislikeable.
Totally a product of toxic masculinity invading the man verses nature theme.
In this case, I wanted the shark to win, and for the first time I can say, the movie was better than the book.

Excellent Book
Revisado: 07-13-21
I really loved this book. Henry Louis Gates, Jr is a superb reader and the information in this book is enlightening and enriching. It helped me better understand my own unconscious prejudices, misconceptions, and filled in gaps in my historical knowledge that I should have paid attention to years ago.
My only critique of the title is that as an audiobook at times I would forget what the dates were that were mentioned and it's not easy to review the information that was stated without skipping back 30 seconds or more if I had to come back to it after taking a break. It probably would have been better as a paperback for me for that reason alone, It has nothing to do with the content. When you have information that jumps through the span of human history in the way this does, it can be difficult at times to keep track of where and when.
However, what I really want now is the TV documentary series of this book.

One rat, popping up here and there, squeaking loudly, and taking a bath in the cream, could be a plague all by himself. After a few days of this, it was amazing how glad people were to see the kid with his magical rat pipe. And they were amazing when the rats followed hint out of town. They'd have been really amazed if they'd ever found out that the rats and the piper met up with a cat somewhere outside of town and solemnly counted out the money.

Another Great Read
Revisado: 06-02-20
This book was not only performed well, it is one of Sir Terry Pratchett's finest works. I'd say that there is fun for ages 8 and up in this book. While a child may enjoy the surface story of Maurice and his Educated Rodents adults will love the deep layers of commentary and faith in human nature and interactions. I loved this book.

Our gut is almost as important to us as our brain, yet we know very little about how it works. Gut: The Inside Story is an entertaining, informative tour of the digestive system from the moment we raise a tasty morsel to our lips until the moment our body surrenders the remnants to the toilet bowl. No topic is too lowly for the author's wonder and admiration, from the careful choreography of breaking wind to the precise internal communication required for a cleansing vomit.

I really enjoyed the writing of this book. I was educated and yet not at all lost or bored with the science. The author is able to explain complex systems in a simple manner without watering down the science too much. I also loved that it answered so many great questions about the gut.
