Historia
When New Yorker Rachel Chu agrees to spend the summer in Singapore with her boyfriend, Nicholas Young, she envisions a humble family home and quality time with the man she hopes to marry. But Nick has failed to give his girlfriend a few key details. One, that his childhood home looks like a palace; two, that he grew up riding in more private planes than cars; and three, that he just happens to be the country’s most eligible bachelor.

Recommendation
Revisado: 10-17-23
Mom and I saw the movie (obvi) but she and I both prefer books when possible. She got the box set, but I just didn't have time with work and school to read them. Instead I downloaded the audio and I'm so glad I did!
The performance was phenomenal and there were so many more nuances to the story that the movie couldn't cover, as with most movie adaptations.
The performance by the reader as spot on for the voices of the characters, and really kept me engaged. I look forward to the rest of the series.

Historia
Wickedly narrated by David Stifel, and written in 1729, this satiric essay on how to solve Ireland's chronic poverty is perhaps more shocking today than when it was written. In the 1960s, when Peter O'Toole did a public reading of this piece in Dublin, he very nearly started a riot. Newspapers the following day lambasted O'Toole's "shocking bad taste." Whether shocking satire, or Monty-Pythonesque surrealism, this essay has continually managed to offend people for well over 3 centuries. Enjoy! (and Thank You!)

Hilarious commentary
Revisado: 10-29-22
The vernal narrative of this piece was flawlessly done, and the commentary on how those with power see those without is still applicable. It's still a relevant commentary on racism and prejudice and I appreciated the deadpan humor with which it was delivered, especial the last few sentences.

Great how to for junkies
Revisado: 07-14-18
The tone of the book was wonderful, but it read like a fifth grader detailing their life constantly. This was the best day of my life. Then this was the best day. Then this was the worst. And so on.
She even details how to get drugs more easily when you want, suggesting bringing cash to psych appointments and going over the process of 'doctor shopping'.
By the time we got to rehab, I was ready for actual depth, but the analysis was simply that the rubes at the center were mean and took her alcoholic based makeup, and that old ladies made her watch Law & Order.
When she got banned from her own friend's wedding I thought, here is where she starts to get deeper, but no. And so I give up. I'm not actually done with the book, but I just can't listen to more of this dreck.
