Brought here by Enderal
Revisado: 02-07-25
I found my way to this book because of the author’s involvement with Enderal, and it was just as good as I’d hoped. Will define getting any other books in this series.

I put off listening to this book for so long because I can’t really get into LitRPG books. This one isn’t like the others though, it’s more like the gamer’s version of Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy. I deeply regret not starting it a lot sooner. It really is as awesome as everyone says it is.

Historia
A man. His ex-girlfriend's cat. A sadistic game show unlike anything in the universe: a dungeon crawl where survival depends on killing your prey in the most entertaining way possible. In a flash, every human-erected construction on Earth - from Buckingham Palace to the tiniest of sheds - collapses in a heap, sinking into the ground. The buildings and all the people inside have all been atomized and transformed into the dungeon: an 18-level labyrinth filled with traps, monsters, and loot.

Their world is one in which those who die in glory return as gods to live confined to a pantheon in Hallandren’s capital city and where a power known as BioChromatic magic is based on an essence known as breath that can only be collected one unit at a time from individual people.

Confusing at first but stay with it
Revisado: 09-18-23
This book was initially hard to get into because the unusual setting and the way magic works was hard to visualize, but definitely stick with it because the story and crazy twists are so worth it. Took me weeks to get to the first meeting with the God King; couldn’t stop listening after that and finished just days later.

Gets even better
Revisado: 08-21-23
I enjoyed the first half well enough, but it’s not until the second part that the book really distinguishes itself and soars to the top of the genre. My one gripe is that the other books aren’t already in graphic audio format here on audible.

Liked this version
Revisado: 08-15-23
So it’s basically the sci-if dystopian version of My Fair Lady, only with layers of class struggle metaphor on top. And you know… It ain’t bad. I’m hooked anyway. I started with the other version of this book but returned it and got the Graphic Audio version instead. I enjoyed the production of this one much better.

This reminded me of those crazy old VHS movies from back in the 80’s with names like “Nightranger” or “Darkblade” or somesuch. I love this kind of stuff but it’s definitely not for everyone.

Historia
On a brisk autumn day, a 13-year-old boy stands on the shores of the gray Atlantic, near a silent amusement park and a fading ocean resort called the Alhambra. The past has driven Jack Sawyer here: His father is gone, his mother is dying, and the world no longer makes sense. But for Jack everything is about to change. For he has been chosen to make a journey back across America - and into another realm. One of the most influential and heralded works of fantasy ever written, The Talisman is an extraordinary novel of loyalty, awakening, terror, and mystery.

Good story/wrong narrator
Revisado: 08-05-23
Almost returned the book several times because the narrator was…. I’m going to avoid saying “nearly impossible to listen to” and instead diplomatically say “wrong for the part.” After about 5 hours of every single sentence sounding like it is ending with an ellipsis you can start to sort of tolerate it, but it was pretty painful getting there. I’m still glad I stuck with it long enough to get used to it because I did enjoy the book itself.

Liked first volume. LOVED this one!
Revisado: 07-02-23
The first book volume was goofy fun because it was basically Doom meets Dead Space. I enjoyed it but it really did have pacing issues and got kind of repetitive and limited due to being stuck in one place the whole time.
This volume has no such limitations and is exponentially better for it. The POV characters are also so much more interesting. It was less smiling along with video game-y nostalgia and more of a genuine tense alien invasion story as though John Carpenter and Tom Clancy had co-written a planetary take over thriller. The vignettes into other brief NPC character windows as the world falls apart was also really enjoyable and better than the first volume.
Aw, let me just skip to the part you’re really trying to check on- yes, this is Dead Space With Power Armor & Cyborg Samurai & Psychic Warriors The Novel. And I already want more!
