I had never read anything by this author, so I didn’t know what to expect going into this audiobook. Although this insta-love romance wasn’t the most eloquent or innovative story, it was entertaining. If I were to read this book again, I would not listen to the audiobook, though. I listen to +100 audiobooks every year, and I’ve never heard a narrator breathe like this one did. Of course, narrators need to breathe, yet I’ve never heard them suck in deep, obvious breaths like Jenny Kelly did. Other than that, her performance was good.

PERFORMANCE: 2-stars
OVERALL: 2.5 stars

If you elect to read this book, I highly recommend that you do not listen to the audiobook. Although Tor Thom isn’t the best narrator out there, he’s not the worst. However, his female counterpart, Charley Ongle, spoke in an overly exaggerated, breathy voice that really detracted from my enjoyment of this story. Her portions were annoying! The story itself wasn’t anything extraordinary either. Aside from the fact that the undercover agent/bodyguard is female, pretty much everything about this book is predictable. Luckily it was short!

REVIEW OF THE STORY:
I won an Audible audiobook copy from the author, excited as I’d never read anything by her before.

Right away I was confused… During the first few minutes, I kept wondering if this was part of a series and I had missed an installment or two. The beginning of this book is literally a condensed summary of how the main characters, Riley and Andrew, met, fell in love, spiraled, then broke up. Usually, we actually get to READ about all of that, experiencing the slow burn or insta-love, yet all of that was completely skipped. Instead, this story doesn’t begin until several years after the couple has already broken up, after going through drug addiction, hospitalizations, loss, shame and more. Not only did the author bypass all of the fun parts (not allowing us to be there the first time they kiss, to enjoy the emotions as their relationship blossomed, to witness their first fight, etc.), by skipping years of their story, we don’t get any character development. We are told a short story about characters we know nothing about other than that brief, condensed summary.

Based on what I did hear, Aster seems to be an extremely talented and very, very eloquent writer. I was often impressed by the words used and how well they flowed. However, the way this book was put together was disappointing to say the least. If the story had been told in its entirety, I think it would have been something quite special!

REVIEW OF THE PERFORMANCE:
I listened to the audiobook narrated by Elysia Segal. I thought it was strange that the author chose a female performer to narrate a story about two men, she chose a fantastic narrator!!!
She delivered a flawless, compelling performance from start to finish!!!

There is no denying that Ashley Jade is a brilliant writer. She always creates characters and stories that are captivating and entertaining. My only complaint is that the editing could be better. There is a ton of repetition (for example, JAWS are mentioned 31 times and hearts are referred to as ORGANS 9), and there are way too many coincidences. There are literally over 50 casinos in the incredibly busy, populated city of Las Vegas, yet the main characters, “just happen“ to run into one another in one?

I also kept finding myself feeling distracted, trying to figure out how I know the side characters. I’m 99% sure I’ve read about Preston‘s brother Asher and his lovers which is driving me crazy!!! One last complaint: this ends with a major cliffhanger. Otherwise, it’s a GREAT story, and the AB narration is +++5 star!!!

This is not a standalone and ends with a cliffhanger.

Despite this being a very short story, this book contains a lot of repetition and unnecessary information. For example, Payne (Pain?) tells us not once but twice why he is still a prospect and how he might always be one because of what he did in the past. We are also told other unimportant details like when a character puts on a tank top despite it being cold outside. On top of that, I felt like there were multiple main characters... I’m not even sure who’s on the cover after listening to the entire audiobook!

Kuhlman did a remarkably good job having to speak from multiple characters (both male and female with multiple accents), yet he mispronounced the name Seamus. (both male and female with multiple accents), yet he mispronounced the name Seamus.

STORY
Julliana, now known as “slave #38”, has the unfortunate luck of being trafficked and forced into sex slavery. This is not a romance, just the story of her horrific experience.

Historically, I have found that the darkest of the dark books were only available in e-book format, so I didn’t have exceedingly high hopes for this one in regards to it being truly DARK. I am pleased to say that I was very wrong! This is typical Claire Thompson: disturbing and depraved!!!

Although I don’t know that there’s truly a way for a man to know for certain whether a woman is an anal virgin or not, everything else about the story was written in a realistic, believable way. Not only did this book remind me that Claire Thompson isn’t afraid to cross boundaries, but it wasn’t predictable like the majority of sex slave stories <spoiler> where the female main character falls in love with *SPOILER IN THE REST OF THIS SENTENCE* one of the bad guys! I’m always happy to read something DIFFERENT in a trafficking/sex slavery story!

PERFORMANCE
I listened to the audiobook narrated byCressida Wolf. Ms. Wolf has an extremely unique voice that is very husky and gravelly. Although some of her masculine voices sounded creepy, it worked well when she spoke as some of the creepy male characters. Unfortunately, she occasionally spoken choppy, broken sentences and she mispronounced many words including SALON, GOATEE, TRACHEA & TISSUE just to name a few.

STORY
Accountant Amelia notices that her boss/ex is embezzling, so she quits and takes a break in the Caribbean for two weeks to think about what she should do about it. When injured, ex-navy SEAL turned private investigator, Jackson, is hired to find out who’s been stealing from the company, sparks fly between him and Amelia.

This is one of those books that I would have quit listening to if I have not received it from the author in exchange for my honest feedback. Not only was everything very predictable, but there were huge, gaping plot holes - things that made absolutely no sense. ***SPOILER IN THE NEXT SENTENCE*** For example, why would Amelia‘s employer hire a private investigator to find her in Grenada if he already knew where she was? This was my first first time reading a book by Riley, but if all of her books are similar to this one, it’s also the last

PERFORMANCE
I listened to the audiobook narrated by Jack Williams. From the very beginning, it was difficult for me to continue listening, often wanting to quit because of the terrible narration. Mr. Williams left way too much time between words, making sentences sound choppy, not flowing like human speech. In fact, he sounded robotic at times; some of my text to speech voices sound more human then he did.

I don’t often hear typos or mistakes while listening to an audiobook, but I heard one while listening to this when Riley says, “Jack’s was confident they had lived a very different lives. “Perhaps this wasn’t a typo but the narrator’s mistake as he mispronounced several words including RECONCILE and MISCHIEF. I will definitely avoid listening to audiobooks narrated by Mr. Williams in the future.

STORY<
Rage wasn’t the best father, but his daughter, “Boss” turned out to be a badass anyway, now Prez of her own mc, The Iron Vex. Rage convinces Boss to combine forces by patching in the last remaining members of his club who have been in hiding.

This book contains all of the elements I love in my dark romances! An a$$hole antihero, badass female characters, a serial killer on the loose, abusive parents, illness, mc, and more! Best of all, this motorcycle club has female club members and Prospects... not just females for the brothers to use for sex (although there are plenty of those too)! And although they didn’t go into any detail, apparently, these female club members, “swing“! This is definitely a unique twist on your typical mc story! And I loved Rage! He stays true to character from the very beginning until the bitter end - never going soft or changing who he is unlike what happens with most of the anti-heroes in romances.

However, there was just too much happening in this book in too short of a time. If more time was given to flesh out this story, it easily could be 5-star worthy!

PERFORMANCE
I listened to the audiobook narrated by Randy Fuller. Although I would have preferred a female to read for the female characters, Fuller does a darn good job!

STORY
Jasmine is in her early 20s when her abusive, neglectful parents disappear, leaving her to take care of her young autistic sister. While working two jobs, she meets Dax, a sexy Singer and music therapist.

IN SPADES wasn’t an extraordinarily special story, but it wasn’t terrible either. It’s not often that I can hear a typo while listening to an audiobook, but I heard at least one when the main character said REVERE instead of REVERIE. Also, the main character would occasionally go on random tangents, talking about non-important things that had absolutely no bearing on the storylinelike morning breath or the fact that her 5-year-old sister loves pizza (don’t they all?). Aside from this unnecessary filler and what some would consider insta-love, overall, IN SPADES is a fun, sweet, sexy story. However, it does end with a cliffhanger, and I didn’t enjoy this book enough to want to continue reading on in the series…

PERFORMANCE
I listened to the audiobook narrated by Ashlyn Selleck. Although I would have preferred that a male narrator spoke for the male characters, Selleck did a decent job. My main complaints were that she mispronounced the word OGLE, and she pronounced the female main character’s name two different ways, sometimes pronouncing it AVA other times pronouncing AV like you pronounce AVENUE. Like the book, she wasn’t an extraordinarily fantastic barrator, but she definitely wasn’t bad!

STORY
Although I know logically that mc romance series can usually be read out of order, I have never started one without reading book #1 until now. I would have rather read book #1 first, but the author was only offering book #2 free in exchange for a review, and I’m glad I accepted it!!!

Madison has taken off again, this time hooking up with the Royal Bastards MC. Wanting to avoid a political scandal, her father, who is running for Senator, once again sends her sister Alice in search of her before the media gets wind of her shenanigans. Then Alice meets Ripper, Prez of Royal Bastards, and the rest is history.

Although I could’ve skipped the quotes at the start of every chapter, everything else about this story was really great! Even though it was 100% predictable, I wasn’t bored at all!! Knight does a phenomenal job of creating realistic, entertaining, sexy characters! It’s very rare that I hear a typo while listening to an audiobook, but there was an obvious one here when the female mc says, “My breath turns a bit breathily unintentionally.” I will definitely read/listen to more by Sapphire Knight!

PERFORMANCE
I listened to the Audible audiobook narrated by Cade and Simone Cohen. Although I appreciated how Cade changed his voice to help differentiate between characters, some of the voices he used were so over-the-top and exaggerated that they sounded like cartoon characters. Also, I struggled at times because I wasn’t certain whether a character was thinking to himself or speaking out loud. Otherwise, his performance was great. I have nothing but fabulous things to say about his partner, Simone. She delivered a flawless, believable performance from beginning to end.
