Historia
981 AD. The Viking King of Dublin is dead. His young widow, Gormflaith, has ambitions for her son – and herself – but Ireland is a dangerous place and kings tend not to stay kings for long. Gormflaith also has a secret. She is one of the Fomorians, an immortal race who can do fire-magic. She has kept her powers hidden at all costs, for there are other immortals in this world – like the Tuatha DE Danann, a race of warriors who are sworn to kill Fomorians.

Favorite book and narration of 2025
Revisado: 04-09-25
This is going right to the top of my favorite books of 2025 without question! I have never read a book that I honestly wanted to root for everyone. At points I was questioning my own sanity "Am I rooting for the bad guy??". The characters and world felt so real. The author just drops you into the world and builds the world and character dynamics along the way. You follow two main POVs, both mature women, both mothers, and definitely not damsels in distress. The world building is flushed out, but not overdone, you can see the world without being bogged down by wordy descriptions. The actions of main characters are very clear to follow, while some side characters remain mysterious (I'm sure as intended). Ultimately, the first book lays out a world that asks: How far will a mother/woman go to protect her child, those she loves and their legacy and her secrets??
I will absolutely be continuing this series and the novellas and cannot wait until my order arrives with them in a couple weeks.
Reading Method: Immersion read, audio narration + physical book - Audio narration was infinity stars
Genre: Historical Fantasy
Narrative Style: First person, dual POV (Gormflaith and Fodla)
Pacing: Fast paced, and consistent, no slumps half-way.
Setting: Ireland 981-999 AD
Lore/World: Irish and Norse lore with Christianity
Political intrigue: Yes, Kingdom politics
Series: Yes, Book 1 of Trilogy

Dark and Creepy Tale
Revisado: 03-08-25
I went into this book blind, having somehow avoided a lot of reviews on it in the past. I was intrigued but went with the vibes for the first half and I would say it was it was about 3.5 stars for the first half. The second half and especially the last 1/4 was 5 stars for sure.
This was a first person atmospheric, creepy story, with single point of view. The cast of characters is intriguing and complicated leaving you wondering who you can trust. WHO CAN BE TRUSTED?
The pieces started to fall together extremely fast towards the end with a page turning ending that left on a major cliff hanger. I will absolutely be continuing the series and looking forward to future work by Rachel Gillig.
I would recommend this book to people who like creepy, atmospheric tales with dark surroundings and mysterious plot and a unique magic system. The novel reads fast and there is plenty of dialogue (for the dialogue lovers), with enough descriptive language to keep you interested, but not too much to overwhelm the focus.

Historia
In the highly anticipated finale to the New York Times best-selling trilogy, dictators, prophets, and tensions rise. In a world that’s conquered death, will humanity finally be torn asunder by the immortal beings it created? Citra and Rowan have disappeared. Endura is gone. It seems like nothing stands between Scythe Goddard and absolute dominion over the world scythedom. With the silence of the Thunderhead and the reverberations of the Great Resonance still shaking the earth to its core, the question remains: Is there anyone left who can stop him?

T Kingfisher is brilliant and so is this narrator
Revisado: 03-01-25
The best weaponized “ignorance” in human and literary history lives in the pages of this book, along with a brilliant love story and a found family quest for the record books!
If that isn’t enough to convince you, how about a weird bird that screams evil prophecy, a noble (seriously) priest, a badger-like creature called a gnole who drives a cart with an ox, a stabby MMC who lives in a magic sword (think Aladdin but in a sword), and a willfully ignorant FMC, who is soft in all the right ways, but who learns to defend herself and everyone around her, for love.
The narration in this audible was 6/5 easily! The narration style made this read so immersive and emotional!

Excellent
Revisado: 02-11-25
I read this as an immersion read. The narrator was cast perfect for this series. This is a YA dystopian, written in third person, multi POV. This was fast paced with lots of twists. The world building here was not complex as it is parallel to our world.
I haven’t read a series that I didn’t want to put down since Hunger Games. I truly think this series is one of the most relevant and symbolic series to be reading right now (2025). I annotated and tabbed throughout my entire read because of the quotes, philosophy, nods to history, and my own commentary directly to Mr.Shusterman!
It’s almost midnight, I’m 42, and I will be going to pick up book 3 right now. When I finish this series I will definitely probably need a face to face convo with Mr. Neal Shusterman!

Amazing! Absolutely Relevant in 2025
Revisado: 02-03-25
I almost have no words. To say, in 2025 that a book published in 2016 would literally have changed my entire brain seems absurd, but it’s not. This book could easily be my favorite of the year, and is definitely going as #1 dystopian. This book packed a greater punch for me than even Hunger Games or The Maze Runner, and likely because of the state of US politics and our world dynamics. I will absolutely be continuing this series and if I could give it 6 stars I would. I will leave this review with a quote (that does not spoil plot)
Have we ever had an enemy worse than ourselves? In the Age of Mortality we warred ceaselessly with one another, and when there was no war to be made, we beat down one another in our streets, our schools, our homes, until war turned our gaze outward again, placing the enemy at a more comfortable distance.
I read this as an immersion read with physical and audible copy and it was a stellar experience

AMAZING BOOK…AMAZING NARRATION
Revisado: 01-11-25
I would listen to anything this narrator works on. I did an immersion read for this entire series and I am so glad I did!
If anyone had asked me a month ago if I would inhale a space opera trilogy, I would have laughed and said “NO WAY”. Not only did I devour this trilogy but it carved itself into my heart and mind forever. The book deserved a standing ovation at the end. If I could give 6 star rating, I absolutely would.
This story was a multi pov, third person space opera with witty banter and a slow burn closed door romance. The science wasn’t too “sciency” and I was able to comprehend the plot and the action without being a sci-fi buff. This is a pretty character driven story with a solid plot that is the most even and consistent based plot I think I’ve ever read. I generally feel book slog pretty easy and across 3 books and close to 1500 pages, I didn’t feel it once. The pacing was medium-fast which kept me from getting whiplash.
The characters were tremendously lovable, even the bad ways. I didn’t know who I was cheering for or against at points. The side characters were hysterical and Kav would absolutely be my BFF in real life! Iykyk!
I do not want to spoil any of the plot points but if you’re scared of sci-fi and looking to try the genre and you love an enemies to lovers slow burn that will melt your heart at points and make you murderous at others, you MUST READ THIS!

Audiobook was the best part
Revisado: 01-07-25
Immersion/Eyeballs Only/Both: immersion
1st or 3rd Person: 1st
# or POVs: 2
Chapter Length: mostly short
Narration: dual - great
Plot Movement: Medium to fast, middle slogs…pacing wasn’t consistent.
Character Development: Yes
Lovable Characters: Yes, although Siiri and Vainamonen are lovable. Aina is bratty, dramatic and annoying as the book progresses.
Spice: Some spice. Spice does not over take the plot
Tropes: Enemies to lovers, pregnancy, damsel in distress, miscommunication
This book had a promising start. The gorgeous cover and phenomenal audio really drew me in at first. About half way through the book and through the remaining , this book was just ok. I think it could have been about 200 pages shorter and would have been better. There were points of meandering description that seemed to be there to add to page count, not move the plot forward.
Multi POVs are not my favorite, however this one was really disjointed to me, as every chapter changes perspective which kept disconnecting me from the emotional side of the characters. It gave me kind of a whiplash typed effect throughout reading. I think the story could have remained in single POV from Siiri and been much much better.
My favorite part was learning the Finnish lore, as I’ve never read a book about Finnish lore. That was definitely interesting and kept the plot intriguing to a certain extent. Similarities to Greek mythology as it pertains to Hades and the underworld.
I will likely not continue the series, as I do not feel invested in the characters nor the plot.

Phenomenal Narration for Immersion Read
Revisado: 12-14-24
This was my first real sci-fi book and a Space Opera at that. I read the entire book via immersion reading. I absolutely loved it. The pacing of this book was perfect for how I love to read books. Fast enough to keep me interested, but not so fast I got whiplash. I do not generally love third person, nor multi POV, however I did not have a single problem keeping up with plot or characters. Speaking of characters, they were all lovable or completely loathe-able with some surprise twists in there too.
The science was something that could be followed and wasn’t overly complex. The world building was relevant to story but I can tell it’s going to grow immensely in the next two books!
Love? In space? Maybe. Serious enemies to maybe friends to maybe lovers? That’s definitely TBD, but there is definitely a slow burn element.
If you’re a fantasy reader and wanna dip your toe into Sci-Fi, I think this series and this author is a great way to do it. Welcome to the family Megan O’Keefe, I think you’ll likely be a staple author now!
