Historia
Without family or means, the strong-willed Lucy Snowe escapes the English countryside for the town of Villette. Though overwhelmed by a new culture and a foreign language, Lucy finds employment at an all-girls boarding school. Her self-reliance is soon compromised by her affections for two men: the kindhearted Dr. Bretton and the imperious professor M. Paul Emanuel. As Lucy longs for both independence and passion in a patriarchal society, fate plays its hand.

Life is not fair
Revisado: 12-01-23
Such a tender story about a woman who had to be strong, and never expected love, but ended up finding it (this part is fair) and then losing it. And yet I think she will go on and make a good life for herself, persevering through this trial as she has all the rest, with the occasional help of true friends. Though the ending is sad, it is not hopeless.

Josiah was 19 with the world at his feet when things changed. Without warning, the new university student's mental health deteriorated to the point that he planned his own death. His mother, bestselling author Amanda Prowse, found herself grappling for ways to help him, with no clear sense of where that could be found. This is the book they wish had been there for them during those dark times.

Much needed, hopeful story
Revisado: 10-06-22
I have depression, and I could relate to so many details of this story. Feeling numb. Getting involved in risky behaviors in order to feel something. Wanting to sleep all the time. Depression really does rob a person of joy. The honest, heartfelt sharing of this mother and son’s experience (even better because they read the book themselves for Audible) reveals the weight and darkness of the experience, while still giving hope that there’s a way out. Thank you for sharing your story. Thank you for promoting awareness and early detection and treatment and fighting for those who have lost the will to fight. Thank you. (Now I’m crying too!)

Historia
Psychologist and criminologist Dr. Gretchen White is a specialist in antisocial personality disorders and violent crimes. She’s helped solve enough prominent cases for detective Patrick Shaughnessy that her own history is often overlooked: Gretchen is an admitted sociopath once suspected of killing her aunt. Shaughnessy still thinks Gretchen got away with murder. It’s not going to happen again.

Sociopaths are people too
Revisado: 07-03-22
Things that seem black and white are actually not. The sociopath has found a way to get what she wants out of life, in a way that is socially acceptable.
I found it interesting that she felt out of place when it came to emotions, and some social situations. Believable and interesting characters.
As for the plot, I enjoyed all the twists and turns, and trying to figure out who might have done it, with that theory constantly changing.

Why do people consider suicide, and what can help them
Revisado: 06-07-22
Once again, Catherine Ryan Hyde has formed realistic characters that help us feel what it’s like to be them. What it’s like to live with parents who are constantly fighting. What it’s like to live with parents who never talk. What it’s like to have lost something precious. What it’s like to feel like the world would be a better place without you. What it’s like to be an addict. And how these same people can be good, caring people. How we can decide to stick around, stand for what we believe, live with purpose, and find our niche.

Joy and pain, and the effects of holding on to resentment
Revisado: 05-30-22
I think I’ll share this story with my teenager. It demonstrates how easy it is to make mistakes in high school that will have long-lasting and possibly terrible consequences. How easy it is to let go of boundaries. How damaging are the effects of alcohol. And how important it is to forgive, instead of holding on to resentment. I really appreciated this story.

Historia
Raymond Jaffe feels like he doesn’t belong. Not with his mother’s new family. Not as a weekend guest with his father and his father’s wife. Not at school, where he’s an outcast. After his best friend moves away, Raymond has only two real connections: to the feral cat he’s tamed and to a blind ninety-two-year-old woman in his building who’s introduced herself with a curious question: Have you seen Luis Velez?

Wow. Definitely worth a a listen.
Revisado: 03-27-22
This story has so much depth. It makes you think about some very big issues in daily life, from the very realistic perspectives of the characters in the story. I cried, I laughed, my heart was warmed. And in the end, I agree with Mrs. G: the world is full of pain, but it’s also full of beauty. We can’t decide the ratio of sadness to joy, we only live the best we can in this world. And I would like to be a candle in somebody’s dark night - a little light to show a bit of beauty to someone who needs to see it. (Also, it helps to set the playback a bit faster than 1x. The narrator speaks very slowly.)

Eight years on, they’re back in paradise, trying to recreate the magic with new partners. What a crying shame they’ve picked the same week to do it. Trapped together on an island small enough to spit across with the wind behind you, Amy and Joel pick up right where they left off: at total loggerheads.

Hilarious!
Revisado: 10-07-21
Adult language and adult content, and absolutely hilarious for adults! Especially those who have been married. The ending was unexpected and sweet. The good guys win. And the person who was mean and self-serving was left all alone. If you’d like a light read that will have you chuckling every other minute, this one fits the bill perfectly.

Too much repetition, too much sexual content
Revisado: 08-24-21
Oh, and everybody really likes to use the f-word. The sex scene was very explicit. Certain phrases were repeated several times - it was like the writer’s vocabulary isn’t big enough. It felt to me like a teenage girl’s fantasy story. Not realistic. If you have a hyperactive libido, and are looking for something to turn you on, perhaps you’d enjoy it.
This is the second Susan Stoker book I’ve read (listening to it - the reader was really good by the way). I gave her a second try after “Trusting Molly” and decided that I really don’t like her writing. I didn’t enjoy either book.

Sappy and pornographic
Revisado: 08-23-21
Not realistic. I suppose guys like him could exist, and girls like her, but to be so attracted, with all the touching, and not progress? Yeah, that wouldn’t happen in real life. So many details were way too cliche, as if they had come from a teenager’s ravings about a crush.
Then the big sex scene was WAY too explicit.
The book did start off good. It could have been an interesting story if it had been written differently. As it was, I listened at 1.5 speed, and didn’t have any desire to slow down and savor any moments.

The perfect non-romantic down-to-earth heart-breaking novel
Revisado: 07-13-21
A nerdy girl’s journey through loss, friendship, figuring out that her crush isn’t who she wants to be with, and finding that she will survive. I cried so much through the end of the story.
The downside: the narrator hardly had any change in her voice for different characters, and no accents at all. Sometimes in a dialogue it was hard to tell when a different person started speaking, because they both sounded exactly the same. Also, where they would have been a break in the book - like a couple lines between the paragraphs - the narrator kept reading as if it were the same scene. Actually, it jumped ahead to the next morning, or a different location. So a little confusing. But the narrator still read with ease, not stilted, and the funny bits made me laugh, and the sad bits made me cry. So over all, I enjoyed the listen.
