Historia
The memory of the Battle of Antietam was so haunting that when, nine months later, Major Rufus Dawes learned another Antietam battle might be on the horizon, he wrote, "I hope not, I dread the thought of the place." In this definitive account, historian D. Scott Hartwig chronicles the single bloodiest day in American history, which resulted in 23,000 casualties.

Very detailed and engaging history of the battle. Contains new interpretations and analysis, including how the battle affected civilians and McClellan’s relationship with President Lincoln. Recommend for the serious historian.

Dangerous and disregarding people don't simply drop out of the sky. Nor are they born bloodthirsty and cruel. When looking at the developmental years of adult criminals and juvenile delinquents or the selfish patterns of anyone that we must rub shoulders with, the question is asked "How does one get this way?" Typically we can see the answers within their genetic mental health history which may hint of possible concern and their first 5 years after birth which is their most impressionable social training ground.

I enjoyed this book because it offered analysis and interpretation of an oft-neglected aspect of this story. Author has an engaging style.

General Robert E. Lee's movement north shifted the war out of the central counties of the Old Dominion into the Shenandoah Valley, across the Potomac, and beyond. The first installment carried the armies through the defining clash at Battle of Brandy Station, after which Lee pushed his corps into the Shenandoah Valley and achieved victory at Second Winchester. Major General Joseph Hooker used his cavalry to probe the mountain gaps, triggering a series of consequential mounted actions.

Neglected campaign history well told
Revisado: 01-12-25
I have a much better knowledge of this sweeping campaign, especially through the eyes of the invaded. Also describes locations and mileages, so you see in your mind the pieces moving on the chessboard towards Gettysburg. Learned a a lot more about the role General Jenkins played as well. Very comprehensive, recommend the 2 vols. for serious students only.

Another Liberal Rant
Revisado: 11-27-24
I enjoyed the author’s research and analysis for most of the book and learned some new information. As a conservative, I did not appreciate the characterization of us as fascist racists. In the recent past Democrat administrations, we’ve had nothing but unceasing wars, energy scams and inflation, uncontrolled immigration, Marxist indoctrination at our universities and culture wars, and corruption of our institutions.

Historia
Vicksburg, Mississippi, was the last stronghold of the Confederacy on the Mississippi River. It prevented the Union from using the river for shipping between the Union-controlled Midwest and New Orleans and the Gulf of Mexico. The Union navy tried to take Vicksburg, which sat on a high bluff overlooking the river, but couldn't do it. It took Grant's army and Admiral David Porter's navy to successfully invade Mississippi and lay siege to Vicksburg, forcing the city to surrender.

Historia
For generations of Americans, the word Antietam - the name of a bucolic stream in western Maryland - held the same sense of horror and carnage that the date 9/11 does for Americans today. But Antietam eclipses even this modern tragedy as America's single bloodiest day, on which 22,000 men became casualties in a war to determine our nation's future.
