Fast-paced and kept my attention. Lots of twists and turns. Pretty satisfying ending. Audio performance was good.

Historia
Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College-Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky. Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is–unless she betrays the man she loves.

But also no where. So bored with the romance. Main character is annoying. Why does the narrator have to shout throughout all of the high action scenes?

Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Expertly crafted, devastating
Revisado: 09-26-23
It took me a while to adjust to how bleak the story was. But after staying with it for halfway through, I saw how important this story was to be told. To bring empathy and understanding of Demon’s community and how ravaged they were by the epidemic. A great body of work, but not a light read.
The narrator was A plus plus.

Meredith and Nina Whitson are as different as sisters can be. One stayed at home to raise her children and manage the family apple orchard; the other followed a dream and traveled the world to become a famous photojournalist. But when their beloved father falls ill, Meredith and Nina find themselves together again, standing alongside their cold, disapproving mother, Anya, who even now, offers no comfort to her daughters.

Not for me
Revisado: 08-23-23
People weren’t kidding when they said the first half was slow. Not only that but it was tiring following a group of repressed, miserable, though still privileged women. I understand that it was a portrayal of generational trauma, but it’s a book where these issues could’ve been solved with therapy and counseling.
The ending also felt very Hollywood and I’m not sure I wanted that.
My biggest question is who let’s a woman who has clearly had that much trauma around child rearing have not one but two more children before having received proper therapy??? And her husband who loved her so much just let her. Also the dad, for all the love the author bestowed on him, was a big part of the issue as well. He really enabled the mom’s behaviors. Like yes she has traumas, but if he were really a good father, he would’ve done a better job to protect his daughters from her triggers.
It just didn’t make sense to me.
The most important part was Vera’s stories.

Historia
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

Enjoyed the beginning, rolled my eyes at the end
Revisado: 08-19-23
Really enjoyed the cut-throat Harry Potter world but with dragons vibes of the beginning. But the writing of the romance towards the end just wasn’t for me.
The fight scenes towards the end was also confusing to follow.
I hope the next books feel more like the beginning of the book.

Something to pass the time
Revisado: 07-21-23
This story was just so mid. I liked the pacing I guess but the premise was so…unsatisfying. There was so much focus on being a wife and a mother. Her identity felt really claustrophobic. And then it at the end about hysterical force or whatever just made me roll my eyes. Was it only attributed to women? Bc the history between women and the word hysteria isn’t great.
Just never really ended up loving or particularly rooting for the main character or her husband.
Also lol at the one best friend to add “diversity.”

Historia
Twenty-nine-year-old PhD student Ingrid Yang is desperate to finish her dissertation on the late canonical poet Xiao-Wen Chou and never read about “Chinese-y” things again. But after years of grueling research, all she has to show for her efforts are a junk food addiction and stomach pain. When she accidentally stumbles upon a curious note in the Chou archives one afternoon, it looks like her ticket out of academic hell.

A wild satire
Revisado: 07-15-23
It was brutal and I can see why some people loved it and some people hated it. Love would be a strong word for me because I identified too much with elements of what Ingrid went through despite not being an academic. It’s pretty brilliant and if you don’t get it, you don’t get it. It’s not meant for you or worse…
Like other people have mentioned, I struggled with the narrators super dead pan, unaffected style at the beginning. I really wished she did more with the voices. Wondered what the experience of the book would have been like with a different narrator.

Historia
Two teenagers, a Greek Cypriot and a Turkish Cypriot, meet at a taverna on the island they both call home. In the taverna, hidden beneath garlands of garlic, chili peppers and creeping honeysuckle, Kostas and Defne grow in their forbidden love for each other. A fig tree stretches through a cavity in the roof, and this tree bears witness to their hushed, happy meetings and eventually, to their silent, surreptitious departures. The tree is there when war breaks out, when the capital is reduced to ashes and rubble, and when the teenagers vanish.

A beautiful story that was slow to launch
Revisado: 05-07-23
I had an incredibly tough time getting into this story at first. The pacing was exceedingly slow and I had a hard time understanding what the narrator of the fig tree was saying. Not sure if it’s the narrators voice or a production issue, but I kept missing every other word - even at super high volumes.
I got more into it maybe a third of the way through. By that time I understood the authors style a lot more. I appreciated that she interwove history with explanations about various flora and fauna. At first it felt disjointed, but eventually I came to see how crafty the author was at doing so.
It was an original way to describe generational trauma. I can see why people say it’s beautiful and bittersweet. Stories that needed to be told.
Just wish it got there a bit sooner.

Bittersweet
Revisado: 04-02-23
I was intrigued that the book had fantastical elements - a sweet reunion with a birth child and romance with a certain man; however there were some really dark moments too. What affected me the most was Mika’s relationship with her mother. Great performance by the main narrator.

Cryptic, vague, depressing
Revisado: 01-30-23
While I loved the poetic quality of the prose and how the author explored themes of grief and loss, I was grasping for something concrete. Ended up feeling as dissatisfied as the characters in the book.
