Better if you’ve been there
Revisado: 04-28-25
Beautiful descriptions and explanations of the San Juan islands. If you’ve been there, you can easily imagine the ferry, the environment, and the community.. the story was so-so and the ending was sadly predictable.

Richard Powers is great again
Revisado: 04-12-25
This book reminded me of why I loved The Overstory. It was relevant, historical and futuristic, had excellent character development, and a creativly woven storyline. Highly recommended! I especially loved the references to scuba diving and struggle for gender equality (women’s rights). A masterful work. Worth reading a second time to take it all in…..

It’s not really about summer camp or teens and really isn’t about God
Revisado: 09-21-24
This was a great mystery book. It’s primarily about dysfunctional families, social class disparities, mental health, and teen angst. It was very hard to put down - there are two mysteries to solve (disappearances), The female characters are excellently developed and the males are mainly flawed, insecure and superficially described. I applaud the author for choosing diverse names - none sounded or looked similar, making it much easier to keep them separate in my mind.
Overall a great mystery read, appealing to adults of any age (it’s not a YA book) and hard to put down. It is revealed piece by piece, like a 7-course meal that you want to enjoy every bite of to the very last one.

Historia
In this vivid memoir, Neidhardt explores her childhood in wider familial and social contexts. Drawing upon a trove of family letters and other archival material, she follows her parents’ journey from privilege to food stamps—from their formative youths, to their embrace of pioneer homemaking and rural poverty, to their sudden and wrenching return to conventional society—and explores the back-to-the-land movement of the 1970s as it was, and as she lived it.

So much better than Hill Billy Elegy!!
Revisado: 07-08-24
Sarah’s life story evolves beautifully in this memoir, tying in generations, loved ones, ecosystems, cultures, and thoughtful prose. I appreciated the supporting information and history wrapped into the story, too. Her conclusions are sweet and hopeful. I liked this recount of growing up off the grid much, much more than Hill Billy Elegy.

I really appreciated the characters, how they developed, and how they ended up. I could relate to each in different ways. The Berkeley references we legit, the NorCal depictions were credible. Nicely concluded storylines, too.

A good story with an overworked theme
Revisado: 04-06-24
Great story, especially as a sequel. Nice way to reveal the perpetrator in the end. Good climax and finish. but I got a bit annoyed with all the butterfly references - it was too much.

This is a tale of murder. Or maybe that’s not quite true. At its heart, it’s a love story, isn’t it? Lana Farrar is a reclusive ex-movie star and one of the most famous women in the world. Every year, she invites her closest friends to escape the English weather and spend Easter on her idyllic private Greek island.

A good story
Revisado: 04-03-24
Good but forgettable. It was a good murder mystery, and there were great twists at the end. But it jumped around a lot (on purpose to reveal twists). I enjoyed it but I definitely could put it down without a problem.

Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Excellent book
Revisado: 03-25-24
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It didn’t feel like a classic retold, it felt fresh and modern, with a twist. I loved the character development. It was a story I could envision my Boomer dad telling me about a guy he grew up with… except the Oxy part. That was too current. Kudos to the author for handling current issues with empathy and transparency.

Interesting mystery but not that intense
Revisado: 02-29-24
For people who don’t like intense thrillers, this is a “lite” version set in India. It’s sweet and you can easily guess who the murderer is, and overall not a bad read.

Cool twist
Revisado: 01-14-24
The characters were amazing - well developed and self-explaining. The ending was great - twisty and intriguing. I only wish I’d understood the significance of the variety of narrators and sources of each part of the book. One downfall of an audiobook is you cannot see any visual differences.
