Historia
Do loving relationships end because couples lack communication skills, struggle to empathize, and fail to accommodate each other’s needs? That’s a common belief within and outside of the therapeutic world… but what if it’s all wrong? In You Are the One You’ve Been Waiting For, Dr. Richard Schwartz, the celebrated founder of Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy, offers a new way—a path toward courageous love that replaces the striving, dependent, and disconnected approach to solving relationship challenges.

After reading several of Richard Schwartz’s book, this is the one I will attempt to peddle to my husband. The porters might be better if you have ambitions to really digest the theory. Well worth it. IFS perspective is actively changing my life

Now I’m off to devour Oliver’s books. I’m expecting to come to some unique conclusions about my own experiences co-habiting with this brain of mine!

Predictable but amicable characters held my interest. I doubt it will warrant a second read any time this decade, but I am looking forward to book 4 and I’ll likely explore more of Cobble’s writing. Simon Vance never disappoints!

Historia
The city of the gods. Elantris once stood as the symbol of all that is beautiful. A sprawling metropolis of unrivaled grandeur, it was a symbol of power and strength, built to be as imposing as it was magnificent. The only thing more glorious than the city itself was its inhabitants, Godlike beings, with silvery skin and hair of the purest flowing white. Able to create powerful magics with a mere wave of their hands, the Elantrians were able to heal mortal wounds and create any object they desired. But Elantris fell...10 years ago.

Awful performance: “Its like murdering your mind”
Revisado: 02-01-23
Wow. That was painful. I suffered through to the end just in case it got better. Like many if you, I’m a huge Stormlight fan hungry for a broader picture of the cosmere. I was unaware that this book was so old and so early on in Sanderson’s career that it’s more like reading a first draft. The dreadful “ movie in your mind“ made in already cliché, underworked story and excruciating waste of time. If you still feel drawn to the story, after all, do yourself a favor and read the paper book. I am an avid audiobook listener, so it takes a lot for me to recommend reading the paper version instead.
I will say, if Sanderson and his entourage ever got around to rewriting, or re-engaging this world, there is an interesting and appealing underlying potential here. My hope so is that they would redeem the embarrassing attitude of the female heroine and the cliché petulant entitled tantrum throwing princess-needing-rescue situation. Yuck

Historia
For the first time as an Orbit special edition, Brent Weeks's blockbuster novella Perfect Shadow tells the origin story of the Night Angel trilogy's most enigmatic character: Durzo Blint. Gaelan Starfire is a farmer, happy to be a husband and a father; a careful, quiet, simple man. He's also an immortal, peerless in the arts of war. Over the centuries, he's worn many faces to hide his gift, but he is a man ill-fit for obscurity, and all too often he's become a hero, his very names passing into legend.

Meh. Disappointing.
Revisado: 01-20-23
Well, I’m not sure what I was expecting but feel disappointed. This whole series seems like a rough draft. I really wish he wouldn’t have quit by lobbing it to the publisher. The concepts and characters have such potential. I suppose maybe her wanted to move on to Light Bringer? You’ll hear no complaints from me regarding that. LB is a compete work of art, whereas this series feels like a sketchbook. Prost!

I barely survived the first book, but my sister likes this series so I pushed through. This one is definitely better, but pales in comparison to the Light Bringer series. Hopefully the third book gets better still!

Historia
For Durzo Blint, assassination is an art---and he is the city's most accomplished artist, his talents required from alleyway to courtly boudoir. For Azoth, survival is precarious, something you never take for granted. As a guild rat, he's grown up in the slums and learned to judge people quickly---and to take risks. Risks like apprenticing himself to Durzo Blint. But to be accepted, Azoth must turn his back on his old life and embrace a new identity and name.

Not Light Bringer
Revisado: 01-07-23
I dragged myself through to the end because in my book, the Light Bringer series is second only to The Stormlight Archive. The narration performance was robotic and cold, survivable only on 1.3x speed. I’m not sure who Brent is appealing to with the artistic descriptions of child rape and butchery seemingly for its own sake. I’m all for violence when it adds to the story, but unfortunately the spectacle upstages his meager character development. I’m honestly shocked because the character development and the magic system in Lightbringer is brilliant. I realize he wrote this first, and I’m trying to leave run in my expectations for him to have grown as a writer. Instead, I find myself regretting the many times I’ve promoted him as an author, wishing I knew to give the caveat that I recommend Lightbringer, not all of Weeks work. I do have some level of interest in the characters and magic system, enough to start the next book. However, this is a tedious stressful read with not enough reward for my suffering. My hope is that his growth as a writer happens here in the writing of this trilogy. Here’s to hoping this awful taste in my mouth clears up in the next book.

Historia
This is a book about discovering the secret to all the things we most desire: contentment, meaning, peace of mind, and true freedom. This skillfully edited translation of selections from the writings of Meister Eckhart (c. 1260-1328) provides a road map to the spiritual life for contemporary seekers. Eckhart takes us on a journey of discovery, a journey in which we learn to let go, relinquish our need to know everything, and lose those things that we think are important for a life of worth. And in the end he shows us that the true secret is: to find yourself, you must lose yourself.

It's hard to imagine a worse narrator.
Revisado: 02-08-21
The narration is unbearable. It's as if this is one of those Sleep Stories where the narrator is intentionally trying to put you to sleep. How does this even happen? This performance is the anthesis of the soul behind Meister Eckhart's enticing passion, awareness of beauty & mystery, eloquence. What a sad, lost opportunity to extend this work out of the narrow esoteric realm and into something more accessible. Clearly, the reader does not understand our feel what he is reading. Come to think of it, listening to this guy is a lot like listening to my kindergarten son read me one of his early reader books! Good grief.

Historia
If you've ever laughed your way through David Sedaris's cheerfully misanthropic stories, you might think you know what you're getting with Calypso. You'd be wrong. When he buys a beach house on the Carolina coast, Sedaris envisions long, relaxing vacations spent playing board games and lounging in the sun with those he loves most. And it's as idyllic as he imagined, except for one tiny, vexing realization: it's impossible to take a vacation from yourself. With Calypso, Sedaris sets his formidable powers of observation - and dark humor - toward middle age and mortality.
