I don't know about you, but I'm really only interested in the story revolving around the magnificent beer can. I don't really care about the refugees on Paradise and their attempts to prove to the hamsters how valuable they are. You can bypass this story and be fine.

I don't want to knock the narrator as being a "Bad" narrator because she has a pleasant voice and only has half a dozen or so weird awkward pauses. Like many of the other comments I agree that she really, really, really needs to avoid doing any male voices and pretty much all accents. It's like listening so someone sing off key.....for most of 30 hours. I found myself wondering if she realized how bad she sounds and then wondering where her support network was and why they didn't say something. This is a repeated description, but she makes all guys literally sound like pompous douchebags. Imagine a 7 year old kid trying to make a phone call and pretending to be their Dad. Now throw in some bad accents. The English accents were so far off it was funny. Dick Van Dyke's accent has been mocked for half a century for being so bad when he acted in Mary Poppins. This one was so much worse it is embarrassing. The only redeeming part of the English accent was that it wasn't as bad as the Russian accent. Wow.

It is a shame half the narration was so bad because it definitely hurt the overall book. The story has a good premise with the whole "end of the world" concept and then proceeded to outline the plan society came up with to save humanity. I happen to disagree with most of "the plan" and my faith in humanity is a whole lot less than the authors, but I still saw where he was going with it and I guess it would be plausible. Let's see if I can come up with a better plan when I get put in this situation.

Not the Worst Narrator

The story was really good but the Narrator/sound effects were awful. The publisher summary says they did new narration, but all the reviews seem to reflect this version. This includes the stupid laughing the main character does after his own "jokes". That being said, it isn't the worse narration. Check out "Test of Magnitude" where ALL the reviews are padded with fake feedback praising the narrator. With this one you can just set your speed to 1.25 and it make the problem tolerable.

The story itself is good. The main idea is that Earth is getting sucked into a war where its advanced cunning and primitive technology are going up against a primitive species with advanced technology. This book sets the foundation that leads to a awesome series.

I haven't reviewed a book in a while but this one got to be irritating enough that I had to vent.

To me it seemed like this book had too many characters like Vizzini from "The Princess Bride". No, it wasn't bad that they used deductive reasoning like this memorable Sicilian, nor was it bad that they had to paint it out for the rest of us "morons". The bad part was there were about 7 or 8 of them that each KEPT doing it. Of course each time when they would gloat about their wonderful deductive skills it was never a short, "It just didn't make sense he was a miner". Instead it was a long drawn out, "Clearly you come from a planet that excelled at .. blah blah blah.. and the majority of people there use their left hand... blah blah.. and they never use a gun on Thursday..blah blah..so obviously I knew you were a secret agent for everyone".

Of course after they each took a turn telling all about their great reasoning skills they would unwaveringly have to spend a while patting themselves on the back. "I am the greatest starship in the universe" or "I'm the smartest man alive".

The story itself was ....... well I'm not really sure. I couldn't binge listen to it since it got to be so irritating. I guess if I lump it as part of the whole series it would be alright, but as a standalone book it was a little weak. Instead of adding new characters it seemed that the author just decided to rewrite existing characters to fit his needs. Good guys are now bad guys, the ship has multiple personality disorder (still the greatest starship in the universe though), and all these geniuses have no problem making the same mistakes like getting taken hostage or being kidnapped over and over and over and over........

If you absolutely loved this book I apologize for offending you. Please let me know how this series ends because I believe this is my stop.

Best one in the series

So after binge listening to this series, I’d have to pick Challenger’s Hope as one of the best books in the Seafort saga. Unlike the next books in this series, there are plenty of space battles and ship side fighting. It also portrays the bureaucracy that exists when corrupt people are in charge. It’s enough to make you want to climb into the book to smack someone.

What got to be a little old was how Nick Seafort would have so much contempt for how some captains treated the crew but in the next breath he is acting 10 times worse than those captains. I think he may have some anger management issues.

This book is pretty good, but unfortunately the series goes downhill from here.

As you can read in the description of this book it takes place decades after the war with the fish-like aliens. What it doesn’t say is that Nick Seafort is merely a supporting character in this new series. Probably 80% of the book is written first hand from the tranny perspective, complete with the language and the “take what you want” mentality. Apart from the few cameos Nick Seafort makes, the rest is written in the perspective of his son and son’s friend.

I know I will probably be alone in this, but I spent most of the book thinking to myself, “I don’t get it”. As I mentioned the majority of the book is written in the tranny… sorry, transpop perspective where if you want something you take it and life has little to no value. When the evil upies are trying to redevelop the land these gangbangers have been squatting on and even worse turn off the water they have been stealing, we are suppose to be outraged? The trannys whole life revolves around taking turf, food or people/food (I know I said food twice but they eat people so it works) whenever they can so where exactly is the basis for their outrage?

The narrator is new to the series but since this series is pretty much a new one I guess that is alright as far as continuity is concerned. However, where he does a good job reading all the tranny parts and adding a good Jamaican type dialect, he makes all the upie kids sound... um... feminine.

As far as the rest of the book, if you can get past the social hypocrisy it is well written and tells a complete story.

It’s always fun to find a decent new series. This first book builds a whole new world where civilization is united under one nation and one religion similar to the British empire in medieval times. No it isn’t a religious “preachy” book, it just creates an story where the captain is the head of the church and state while underway. Any other religion is discouraged and blasphemy is about the worst thing anybody could do, but that’s about the extent of it. If you are offended by anyone even mentioning God, go ahead and skip this one.

Like most “space operas” I was expecting some high tech ship involved in all kinds of space battles with the lasers, nuclear torpedoes and of course light speed delays. The ship in this book is a very minimally armed navel cargo ship full of passengers and just a handful of actually navy personnel aboard. Think love boat in space….. with a single laser.

Despite the lack of action the book was pretty entertaining. The story deals with different situations where a young person is put in charge and his fresh view of the way things are currently ran causes people to question and think about what they are doing. The main character is a bit juvenile with his temper tantrums but I guess that is understandable since the main punishment for the midshipmen throughout the book is a good old fashion spanking.

It’s pretty good so far, but we’ll see for sure after book 2.

The great and powerful Kyle Riggs

Revisado: 08-04-15

I’m sure I’ll take an unhelpful reviewer hit for this, but Kyle Riggs is a hypocritical moron. Within the first few chapters I found myself hoping for the death of this “great” man. I continued to pray for his untimely demise in books, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9. I’m assuming he never actually bites it in 10 or 11 but really don’t care at this point. I know this is an unpopular perspective and being buried in the 4000 other reviews this will probably never even be seen, but I hope this will bring me some closure regarding this tool.

Why do I dislike this galactic hero so? Where do I begin? It could be because after a very devastating event happens to his family, he is preoccupied with banging some stranger. Perhaps it could be how he has declared himself smarter than every other being on the planet. It could possibly be irritation derived his many non logical “great ideas”. How about a combo. He continually made stupid unilateral decisions effecting the human race followed by a complete about face on the “final” decision to do the exact opposite thing (but still stupid). His decisions were based on whatever fancy he had at that moment damned be consequences.

It didn’t take long to realize how big of a tool this guy was so I don’t know why I basically listened to the whole series. I really liked the concept of the technology and if the main character was really a “hero” the series would have been great.

I think Jack Campbell is an excellent author and have enjoyed most of the books he has written. This one……not so much. Don’t get me wrong, it was alright, just not as good as any of the previous books.

The “AI” Black Jack adds an interesting twist but seems a bit lacking as a proper nemesis for the great John Geary. Maybe because it felt more like a computer program rather than a proper “We will assimilate the universe” bad guy, but it was never quite there in terms of what I have come to expect.

This book had an interesting concept regarding an AI being an key part of every spaceship. Unfortunately the concept didn’t help this one fully developed into a “Great” book. Before you mark me as being unhelpful, I liked the story, I just don’t want to marry it. It was entertaining enough and the narrator did a good job. The story just needed something.

If you’ve got a credit burning a hole in your digital pocket I say go for it. You could do a lot worse than this book.
