Tedious and depressing
Revisado: 10-01-22
The narration was excellent, but the protagonists were dislikable people. I couldn’t empathize with either of them. The various characters tediously reiterate that falling for a bar girl is a disaster. Okay, I got it the first time. I nearly abandoned it, but stuck it out to see if it got any better. Resolution was unsatisfactory

Historia
Felix Pink is retired. Widowed for more than a decade and a painfully literal thinker, he has led a life of routine. He occupies himself volunteering as an Exiteer - someone who sits with terminally ill people as they die by suicide, assisting with logistics and lending moral support. When Felix lets himself into Number 3 Black Lane, he’s there to keep a dying man company as he takes his final breath. But just 15 minutes later, Felix is on the run from the police. Now he must discover whether what went wrong was a simple mistake - or deliberate, a murder.

Best book I’ve read in years!
Revisado: 08-21-21
I’ve been a member since the early 2000s (pre-Amazon). I have read so many books (850+ titles in my library), that it’s hard for a book to hold my interest these days. This book was so much fun. I loved the relatable, believable characters, the many twists & turns, and laugh out loud moments. This author is a genius! Narration brilliant, too.

Quality writing
Revisado: 03-20-19
I’ve read so many books now that they’re all starting blend into the same story arc of exposition > rising action > climax > resolution, blah, blah, tired trope, blah.
This book, however, felt fresh. Characters were dynamic, likable, believable. Overall really well written and engaging.
Highly recommended!

When horror author Thad McAlister began his latest novel, a tale rooted in the witch trials of centuries past, the words flowed effortlessly. The story poured forth, filling page after page with the most frightening character ever to crawl from his imagination. It was his greatest work, one that would guarantee him a position among the legends of the craft.

Poor writing
Revisado: 08-11-15
I've read enough books now that I can usually tell the calibre of writing by the first couple sentences. 10 minutes in, "The eager fire licked at the leather binding, reaching around the journal with the hungry tongue of an unfed child..." was all I needed to read.
I'm glad Audible has a decent return policy.

Historia
In 2007 chef Grant Achatz seemingly had it made. He had been named one of the best new chefs in America by Food & Wine in 2002, received the James Beard Foundation Rising Star Chef of the Year Award in 2003, and in 2005 he and Nick Kokonas opened the conceptually radical restaurant Alinea, which was named Best Restaurant in America by Gourmet magazine. Then, Achatz was diagnosed with stage IV squamous cell carcinoma - tongue cancer.

Revisado: 07-21-15
I love how reading transports me to other worlds. In this book I experienced the focused drive it takes to be a world class chef, and then experienced the horror and ordeal of cancer treatment. I was rooting for Grant the whole way and am so glad he survived.
