Historia
Although most people associate the term D-day with the Normandy invasion on June 6, 1944, it is military code for the beginning of any offensive operation. In the Pacific theater during World War II there were more than one hundred D-days. The largest - and last - was the invasion of Okinawa on April 1, 1945, which brought together the biggest invasion fleet ever assembled, far larger than that engaged in the Normandy invasion. D-Days in the Pacific tells the epic story of the campaign waged by American forces to win back the Pacific islands from Japan.

It is a great recap of the Pacific War.. however
Revisado: 12-17-24
Plenty of information, a great summary of many battles fought by the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines AND the Coast Guard.
The Higgins Boats were manned by the Coast Guard in the Pacific in WW2.
Other than that error, a good book.

In captivating detail, Stevenson provides a fast-paced, hour-by-hour narration from the hijacking of Air France Flight 139 to the final 90-minute mission. In addition to discussing the incredible rescue itself, Stevenson also covers the political backdrop behind the hijacking, especially Ugandan President Idi Amin's support for the hijackers, which marked one of the first times a leader of a nation had backed terrorist activities.

Don't expect details, a good overview.
Revisado: 12-13-24
A lot of time spent on general knowledge, short on detail. The two hour reprint of the United Nations arguments are a example of the "filler material" that is used to write this book.

Historia
When Edmund Hillary first conquered Mt. Everest, Sherpa Tenzing Norgay was at his side. Indeed, for as long as Westerners have been climbing the Himalaya, Sherpas have been the unsung heroes in the background. In August 2008, when eleven climbers lost their lives on K2, the world’s most dangerous peak, two Sherpas survived. They had emerged from poverty and political turmoil to become two of the most skillful mountaineers on earth. Based on unprecedented access and interviews, Buried in the Sky reveals their astonishing story for the first time.

Euphemistically labeled as the "Water Supply and Prophylaxis Administration" and "HippoEpizootic Administration" of the Imperial Japanese Army, Unit 731 and Unit 100, as well as their subsidiary branches, performed human experimentation on the innocents under the leadership of Dr. Ishii Shiro. Although the exact number of victims is unclear since the Japanese destroyed most of the evidence at the end of the war, but it ranged from 3,000-250,000 innocent men, women, and children.

Revisado: 09-15-24
Very narrow look into horrors of the Japanese war machine. This repeats statistics, but no human drama is invoked.
This was a free selection, and has some merit, but others books exist that explore the human cruelty of this unit.

Historia
In the dark days after the devastating Pearl Harbor attacks during the spring of 1942, the United States was determined to show the world that the Axis was not invincible. Their bold plan? Bomb Tokyo. On April 18, 1942, sixteen B-25s, known as the Doolittle Raiders, hit targets across Japan before escaping to China. The eighth plane, however, did not follow the other raiders. Instead, Plane 8's pilots, Captain Edward "Ski" York and Lieutenant Bob Emmens, never attacked Tokyo, but headed across Japan to the Soviet Union, supposedly due to low fuel.

Revisado: 08-21-24
It was a great report on a piece of the Dolittle Raid, however deviated to explain historical wars 40 years prior. This makes a good story for those unfamiliar with warfare and politics.
If you are familiar with the political climate prior to and WW2, the book drags on at times.

Amazon you should be embarrassed by this product.
Revisado: 07-11-24
I remember the story, photos and TV coverage of this tragedy. This cluster in editing negates a good performance by the reader.
As the story stumbles on, it's clear the editor failed to correctly piece this story together.
If this was the first Amazon book I heard, I never would have bothered to listen to a second book.

Historia
March 19, 1945: The war in the Pacific approaches its apocalyptic climax. The largest wartime armada ever assembled, Task Force 58, is closing in on Okinawa; once taken, it will finally put American B-29 bombers in range of the home islands of Japan - and victory. Trial by Fire is the gripping novelization of how, against all odds, the sailors of the Franklin were able to save their ship, after three agonizing days of battling the flames that ultimately claimed the lives of 832 men and injured 300 more.

Realistic experience of WW2 Pacific battles
Revisado: 04-10-24
The book ending is incomplete. A Carrier absorbs a Japanese Attack undergoing extensive damage. Heroes rise up to save the ship and the men trapped throughout the wreckage.
The dead are lost to eternal patrol. The wounded fight a variety of injuries and the prospect of long recoveries. For those blown overboard, or forced by the fires into the sea face a different battle, their own Captain branding them cowards.
The ending? PTD is a solid author, his books are rock solid. Just not sure I agree with his ending.

I'm fairly well versed on the Gilbreth Family and business. I would not waste a minute on this, as it goes nowhere, not even a tease for good things to come.
If something eventually comes around to this, I'll update my review.

Historia
Summoned to relieve destroyers that are bogged down by escort duty in the escalating Pacific Theater, the Hayward is met with a rather cold reception. In the eyes of Pacific Fleet sailors, North Atlantic convoy duty pales in comparison to the bloody, carrier-sinking battles of Savo Island and Guadalcanal. However, Atlantic Fleet ships have had to specialize in one thing: anti-submarine warfare. The Hayward is sent off into remote South Pacific operating areas with orders to find and destroy Japanese submarines—but with little expectation of success.
