Historia
Sam Carlson is a projectionist in small-town Minnesota, where fantasies unspool in glorious black and white—for him and for his sweetheart, college-bound math whiz Sarah Haber. When the Japanese bomb Pearl Harbor, Sam is sent to the Philippines and captured as a POW. Brutalized but unbroken by the Bataan Death March and POW camps, Sam is one of eighteen hundred starved and weakened prisoners herded into the cargo hold of a barbaric hell ship called the Arisan Maru, his survival doubtful.

Amazing must-read!
Revisado: 03-08-25
Well-researched and flawlessly executed fictionalization of an important piece of WWII history. Of all the things I’ve watched and read about WWII in the Pacific, this book has given me the most thought provoking perspective on the often conflicting tenets of duty, honor, faith, survival, and heroism. Bravo, Robert Dugoni, for revealing and highlighting this historical perspective!

Very different
Revisado: 10-05-24
Lisa Jewell made this character very relatable. The performance of the narrator was excellent! I’m not a huge fan of comics, so this wasn’t as much my thing, but it was very well written.

Baffling plotlines, terrible narrator
Revisado: 08-21-24
Overall, the story could’ve been good, but it was not well written or researched. The medical and procedural aspects were laughable, and the main character did not resonate with me. To be honest, I’m not sure she would resonate with many people. She was mean-spirited and came across as being only interested in herself and her own interests. The narrator made things even worse. She read incredibly slowly, and, even speeding the book up to listen to it, I had difficulty finishing it. I found that my mind wandered and I lost interest many times, so I kept having to rewind to what I’d missed. It took much longer than normal for me to finish this book, and I dreaded having to listen to it. I’m relieved to be done with this one, and if you’re considering it, just don’t.

Like nothing I’ve ever read!
Revisado: 08-09-24
This book is amazing! It ripped me apart and lovingly sewed me back together again. The characters are so rich and complex, and the story is compelling. There were twists and turns like a good mystery, heartache and fear like a good psychological thriller, and love and hate like a good romance. In a nutshell , all I can say is it’s SO very, very good! As usual, Eduardo Ballerini’s narration is SUPERB!

Historia
I gaze across the candlelit table into the eyes of the man I love. It’s our anniversary dinner, a celebration of our marriage, of how far we’ve come. But within hours our romantic date has ended in murder… When I wake in a hospital bed, blinking under the blinding white lights, I hear someone saying there has been an accident. My heart misses a beat when I recognize my husband’s voice. He says I was driving the car. He says I’ve killed someone.

Clueless, trite characters
Revisado: 08-05-24
The plot was far-fetched and the main character was extremely shallow. So many rules and laws were broken that could never happen in reality, even with a well-connected dirty politician pulling the strings. It is obvious to me that the author wanted to the reader to conclude that the main character was strong and even went so far as to have everyone tell her that she was strong throughout the book, just to convince us. She was not strong, however, and her extreme weakness and recurrent lapses in judgement leading to poor decisions was infuriating. Overall, I’m not sure I gained anything from listening to this one. I kind of regret that I did.

Historia
Newlywed Chief of Police Kate Burkholder is awakened by an urgent midnight call summoning her to a suspicious fire in the woods. When she arrives at the scene, she discovers a charred body. According to the coroner, the deceased, an Amish man named Milan Swanz, was chained to a stake and burned alive. It is an appalling and eerily symbolic crime against an upstanding husband and father.

One of Castillo’s best plot lines!
Revisado: 07-14-24
This book was fast, fresh, and very well written! I have always loved Kate Burkholder in all her flaws and her strengths, and this book is no exception! I do get weary reading about her relationship struggles with the mayor and her brother, especially when some of the short stories (the tweeners) seemingly put some of these issues to rest, but that’s the only significant negative I can identify.

Historia
The victims are all found face-down in the murky waters of the creek that runs through Cherokee Pointe, Tennessee. They are naked, except for the black satin ribbon tied around their necks. And each murdered woman shares a single characteristic... they are all redheads... Socialite Reve Sorrell has come to Cherokee Pointe seeking answers about her family history and her shocking connection to wrong-side-of-the-tracks Jazzy Talbot. With their stunning good looks and shining red hair, the two are mirror images of each other—twins abandoned at birth and raised in very different worlds.

Great storyline, narrator needs to learn how to pronounce Tennessee town names
Revisado: 05-01-24
This was a great storyline, but, except for the numerous sex scenes, the book was written more on a teen or young adult reading level. Honestly, reading this, you would think that the only thing East Tennesseans do is fantasize about, talk about, and partake in ribald sex. There were multiple repeated phrases and words, especially during the sex scenes. I live in the area this book referred to, and it drove me nuts that the narrator mispronounced the names of our nearby cities and towns. Otherwise, the narrator does do a good job creating multiple character voices and personalities.

Story gets bogged down
Revisado: 06-02-23
I’ve absolutely loved every book by this author until this one. I usually have no trouble following the story, but this one had so many characters and details that I often got lost and found myself zoning out of the audiobook. I had to rewind multiple times to be able to follow it. This one may be better to read visually.

Poor narration of a good story
Revisado: 04-23-22
Great story and character development. The book gets wordy at times and occasionally bogged down with minute details. Overall, it’s a good story, but this narrator is terribly monotonous and mispronounces multiple words repeatedly. The character of the killer in the story is developed more than the heroine, which makes the ending a little underwhelming.
