Martha in her "zone of genius"! It's a must-read. For everyone, but especially working creatives. I think it has the potential to unlock US... as in humanity, US.

Sad and disturbing account of the "collateral damage" that narcissists wreak. In this case, it was young children, which is saddest of all. I know that narcissists often have a weak partner, and boy oh boy, was Ruby's husband weak. I think the author managed a fair portrayal of the situation given that this involved her family, and must've been emotionally wrought and painful to recount. I wish those children well.

Brian Doyle's writing is at once simple and deeply profound. Amusing and touching. His topics are quotidian but he somehow, in the most ordinary way, leads you to contemplate the sublime. My heart swelled, my eyes misted over, I laughed out loud – sometimes within the reading of one essay. He has left me in awe of his genius and huge, excellent heart. Now, I'm a little more in love with my own life, my children and this awesome world.

With such a compelling title, I'd expected more – something deeper in the way of Katherine May's work.

Excellent book. Excellent in voice and writing. So many memoirs exist on that level of "I did this, then I did that...I, I, I...". THIS book is literary, and not in that snobbish way one might think. Indeed there is nothing snobbish about Crews' childhood. It's straight-forward writing that has you gripped by the story, and empathizing with the characters (even the scoundrels) because Crews is that good. For me, this book exists on par with Frank McCourt's Angela's Ashes, Mary Karr's Lit (and all her work) and Jeannette Wall's The Glass Castle.

The information is important and written in an accessible and entertaining way BUT the narration is distracting. Okay, annoying. (It is read by the author.) I think if this were a college lecture, the spirited presentation would be appropriate and dynamic. But this is an audiobook, and a successful narration – IMO – isn't (or shouldn't be) front and center. The story should be, with the narration bringing it alive. Clearly the stories being related are important and the events were incredibly unjust. The overly emphatic and at times sarcastic, incredulous tone of the reader detracts focus. I have 5 hours to go, and I don't know if I can make it. Maybe I'll check the physical book out of the library.

It's deep, it's light, sometimes funny, sometimes sad – it gets you feeling and thinking.

The overexcited, over-emphasized delivery is not funny –– just hard to listen to. I can't get past a 1/2 hr. Warning: the sample is of the forward and read by Mike Judge.

I like her comedy. But not as an audiobook. Like 7 hrs and 40 min of the schtick––she never lets up on the act (and she does perform it like an act)–– which detracts from the interesting story of her life. By the end, it was like fingernails on a chalkboard.

I've read everything this man has written or co-written, and I wasn't going to miss this one. This one is a reflection on how his life's work came to be, and how he came to develop the methods he uses.

Phil Stutz's teachings are no-nonsense in that he doesn't bypass the truth that life will include pain and require work. Having said that, he also developed an active method of therapy by which you can manage your inner workings, and so that you can "get out of your own way" and create a life you want. I suggest reading everything he's written, including this book.
