Historia
The Roaring Twenties—the Jazz Age—has been characterized as a time of Gatsby frivolity. But it was also the height of the uniquely American hate group, the Ku Klux Klan. Their domain was not the old Confederacy, but the Heartland and the West. They hated Blacks, Jews, Catholics and immigrants in equal measure, and took radical steps to keep these people from the American promise. And the man who set in motion their takeover of great swaths of America was a charismatic charlatan named D.C. Stephenson.

setting the stage before introducing the dilemma
Revisado: 08-11-23
Timothy Egan does a masterful job of painting a full canvas and presents the Klan in the 1920s with high resolution. While most are aware of the impact of the Klan in fragmented situations in the South, many have no idea of the power they held in the country (especially within the heartland). Readers will appreciate the degree to which he educates us on the power of the Klan because it is matched only by the magnificence of their fall.

Historia
James McPherson shows that, contrary to what many scholars believe, the soldiers of the Civil War remained powerfully convinced of the ideals for which they fought throughout the conflict. Motivated by duty and honor, and often by religious faith, these men wrote frequently of their firm belief in the cause for which they fought: the principles of liberty, freedom, justice, and patriotism. For Cause and Comrades lets these soldiers tell their own stories in their own words to create an account that is both deeply moving and far truer than most books on war.

The Heart of the Soldier
Revisado: 08-10-23
This is an excellent observation of what inspired the men on both sides of the battlefield. While extrapolation can be harmful in some instances when the need for inference is strong, this work does it in a way that's both fair and objective. Grateful that we are able to hear the hearts of the soldier through this treatise.
