Historia
Myrlie Louise Beasley met Medgar Evers on her first day of college. They fell in love at first sight, married just one year later, and Myrlie left school to focus on their growing family. Medgar became the field secretary for the Mississippi branch of the NAACP, charged with beating back the most intractable and violent resistance to black voting rights in the country. Myrlie served as Medgar’s secretary and confidant, working hand in hand with him as they struggled against public accommodations and school segregation, lynching, violence, and sheer despair within their state’s “black belt.”

Excellent read

This is a well written and timely book regarding government over reach into a woman’s right/ability to make her own reproductive decisions. This book also guides the reader through the landscape of poverty and difficulty emerging from poverty.

Historia
A dazzlingly accomplished debut collection explores the ties that bind parents and children, husbands and wives, lovers and friends to one another and to the places they call home. In “Who Will Greet You at Home”, a National Magazine Award finalist for The New Yorker, a woman desperate for a child weaves one out of hair, with unsettling results. In “Wild”, a disastrous night out shifts a teenager and her Nigerian cousin onto uneasy common ground. In "The Future Looks Good", three generations of women are haunted by the ghosts of war.

Great book/stories. Skip the audio book. Audible ruined this book experience.

I enjoyed most of the stories. Wish I’d gotten the book instead of audio. I would not recommend this audio because it is out of sync with the book chapters. It’s impossible to know where one story ends and another begins. Story names are not listed on the chapter list & don’t align, so it’s difficult to to go back and re-read or review a story. Disappointing!

The astonishing journey of a bright, utterly displaced boy, from the short-lived African nation of Biafra, to Jamaica, to the harshest streets of Los Angeles - a searing memoir that adds fascinating depth to the coming-to-America story.

This is a well written and poignant story about a young African man’s difficult journey to manhood and in different parts of the diaspora.
