Historia
To trace the history of the twenty-first century so far is to trace a history of unaffordability and shortage. After years of refusing to build sufficient housing, America has a national housing crisis. After years of limiting immigration, we don’t have enough workers. Despite decades of being warned about the consequences of climate change, we haven’t built anything close to the clean-energy infrastructure we need. Ambitious public projects are finished late and over budget—if they are ever finished at all.

A manifesto for 21st century liberals
Revisado: 04-12-25
This book describes how liberal and conservative ideas of the last 25 years have blocked progress toward a society of achievable material abundance. It won't persuade conservatives to change their ways, but it has a very good chance of influencing the non-socialist left.

Some really fine contemporary SF
Revisado: 03-17-25
Too many (5 or 6) to review individually so I'll just say that if you don't find 3 or 4 that you enjoyed, you truly are not a fan of the genre.

Not for the faint of heart, but if you can grok the basics, it's an amazingly clear and thorough introduction to contemporary particle physics.

Historia
Centuries ago, the murder of a beloved king tore apart the Kingdom of Caledun. The land was plunged into chaos and thousands perished. A new order was established in an attempt to return Caledun to its former glory. It failed, but in its place rose the beginnings of the Code. During this same period, the mystical caretakers of the Great Wood retreated from the world of Kal Maran, their disappearance an ominous harbinger of the suffering that was to follow. The Great Wood now grows out of control. Cities, towns, and villages have fallen before the relentless march of the forest.

A leading national security expert, who publicly predicted Vladimir Putin's intention to launch a full-scale invasion of Ukraine months before it took place, lays out the case for why China's Xi Jinping is preparing to conquer Taiwan in the coming years and the dire stakes for America and the whole world if he is not deterred.

Thorough and convincing analysis of US-China relationship
Revisado: 10-03-24
Alperovitch has written a thoughtful and thorough analysis of the US-China relationship for the next decade. His conclusions are, at the same time, not obvious and quite convincing. What about Russia, Iran, and N. Korea? He's got answers. Is economic decoupling the best economic strategy? His answer may surprise you. How should we support Taiwan? Ditto. If your mind is open enough to be changed, read this book.

Historia
Just over 125,000 years ago, humanity was going extinct until a dramatic shift occurred—Homo sapiens started tracking the tides in order to eat the nearby oysters. Before long, they’d pulled themselves back from the brink of extinction. The human brain, and its evolutionary journey, is unlike anything else in history. In A History of the Human Brain, Bret Stetka takes listeners through that far-reaching journey. He also tackles the question of where the brain will take us next, exploring the burgeoning concepts of epigenetics and new technologies like CRISPR.

Useful in places, too political in others
Revisado: 05-29-24
Very good performance of so-so material. I didn't need to know that the author sees humanity as a plague on our planet. But the scientific information was well-written and informative.

Historia
In this classic work, Alasdair MacIntyre examines the historical and conceptual roots of the idea of virtue, diagnoses the reasons for its absence in personal and public life, and offers a tentative proposal for its recovery. While the individual chapters are wide-ranging, once pieced together, they comprise a penetrating and focused argument about the price of modernity.

Revisado: 01-04-24
I'm not a professional philosopher and that's the proper audience for After Virtue. An interest in philosophy let me follow maybe half of the arguments--maybe. But the conclusions are clear and crisp. Worth the time, for sure.

Historia
In the 1800s, a sailing ship crashes off the coast of Norway. In the 1900s, a Zepellin explores an icy canyon in Antarctica. In the far future, a spaceship sets out for an alien artifact. Each excursion goes horribly wrong. And on every journey, Dr. Silas Coade is the physician, but only Silas seems to realize that these events keep repeating themselves. And it's up to him to figure out why and how. And how to stop it all from happening again.

First, wow can Reynolds write. His style is just elegant. I'm not going to try to describe the plot because even the attempt would give away too much. The reader does a great job with a variety of accents.

What a disappointment
Revisado: 07-17-23
Sapiens is an excellent book. It is intelligent, non-ideological, persuasively written, and fun to read. Homo Deus begins badly and rapidly goes downhill. I returned it very quickly; this is only the third Audible book I've ever returned (and I've been listening for many years).
He begins with three barely constructed straw men: that humans will use their new technological competence to try to attain bliss and immortality and to become like gods. That's not even good science fiction. He then begins to rant about the bourgeoisie, aristocracy, and capitalists. Enough. Don't waste your time or your credits.

Centuries before the events of A Game of Thrones, House Targaryen - the only family of dragonlords to survive the Doom of Valyria - took up residence on Dragonstone. Fire & Blood begins their tale with the legendary Aegon the Conqueror, creator of the Iron Throne, and goes on to recount the generations of Targaryens who fought to hold that iconic seat, all the way up to the civil war that nearly tore their dynasty apart.

Martin at his best
Revisado: 03-19-23
I never thought I would enjoy a history quite so much. It is a tour-de-force in which it tells many stories, each more fascinating than the last, and does it in the voice of a stuffy old historian whom you wish you had as a professor in college. The background of the world of Fire and Ice is clear and convincing and stands on its own.
