With her remarkable insight into the human condition and silences that contain multitudes, Elizabeth Strout returns to the town of Crosby, Maine, and to her beloved cast of characters—Lucy Barton, Olive Kitteridge, Bob Burgess, and more—as they deal with a shocking crime in their midst, fall in love and yet choose to be apart, and grapple with the question, as Lucy Barton puts it, “What does anyone’s life mean?”

Absorbing, beautiful

I loved this debut from the author. Hard to believe it’s a first book. Some passages catch you by surprise with their wisdom and maturity. Innocence lost by mother and daughter, and it’s the same villain, but quite complicated.

Contrast in women’s behavior then and now.
Revisado: 10-11-24
I liked how different the two women were— how lovable Merry was and how not forthcoming Feron was. I admired Merry for her abiding faith in Feron.
Things may have been repeated and passages were long, but this book mirrors life, especially the writing life. There is plenty of building at the beginning and loss after loss at the end. But when I finished this and considered that Gail Godwin was well over 80 years old when she finished this book, I was deeply impressed.

The book Moriarity has written is a triumph of imagination and research. It is clever and very, very wise-a book to read at any time in life. I do have a bit of a problem with the accent, but slowing it down to .9 helps a lot. The central character is wonderful.

Easy and Fun

Narration was great. It seems a little far-fetched that a woman this educated and sophisticated would not have questioned her father’s circumstances earlier, but this is a true beach book and a lot better than many summer reads.

The agenda the author of the book relentlessly carries forward was too heavy.
Revisado: 03-21-24
What stood out most to me in this book of the series was Cara’s willfulness and arrogance. When things went wrong, she blamed others wildly and indiscriminately. Surely she was generous, but not when it involved discomfort for her. By the end of the book, I was finished with her.
I thought the narrator was great.

Winsome.
Revisado: 03-03-24
Jamie is it both relatable and winsome. You can feel that ghost weight hovering over her all her life. You can feel the alcoholic father and the busy mother. You can feel the trying, harder and harder. You can feel the breathing herself into success, the QVC triumph and the final winning.
She is sincere and lovely. She is a good person, the kind we’d like to be. I’m just sorry she tied this all up with the O’Steens.
.
She can stand on her own; she didn’t have to do that.

Touching story and great performance
Revisado: 12-04-23
I loved this story about a child who left war-torn England to live with an American family during WWII.
The story follows both families far into the future and made me consider things I never had.
Beautifully written and narrated. Please don’t miss.
