Historia
This near-future trilogy is the first chance for English-speaking listeners to experience this multiple-award-winning phenomenon from Cixin Liu, China's most beloved science fiction author. In The Dark Forest, Earth is reeling from the revelation of a coming alien invasion - in just four centuries' time. The aliens' human collaborators may have been defeated, but the presence of the sophons, the subatomic particles that allow Trisolaris instant access to all human information, means that Earth's defense plans are totally exposed to the enemy.

Absolutely epic
Revisado: 06-25-20
There are parts that seem long and boring. Stick with it. It's all a setup for an incredible series of profound philosophical reveals.

Historia
Listener beware: Kevin D. Williamson - the lively, literary firebrand from National Review who was too hot for The Atlantic to handle - comes to bury democracy, not to praise it. With electrifying honesty and spirit, Williamson takes a flamethrower to mob politics, the “beast with many heads” that haunts social media and what currently passes for real life. It’s destroying our capacity for individualism and dragging us down “the Road to Smurfdom, the place where the deracinated demos of the Twitter age finds itself feeling small and blue.”

Well written and original

Thoughtful critique of the rationale behind outrage culture. Those in the center right and left will resonate with many of these themes, particularly the critique of corporate culture. Far right and left will disagree with much of what is said.

Historia
God Save Texas is a journey through the most controversial state in America. It is a red state, but the cities are blue and among the most diverse in the nation. Oil is still king, but Texas now leads California in technology exports. Low taxes and minimal regulation has produced extraordinary growth, but also striking income disparities. Texas looks a lot like the America that Donald Trump wants to create. Texas native Lawrence Wright gives us a colorful, wide-ranging portrait of a state that not only reflects our country as it is, but as it may become.

Meh
Revisado: 02-10-20
If you want to learn about Wright, or about Texas, look elsewhere.
Pros:
Wright is a good writer, but that's the only positive.
Cons:
There are few insights about Texas, but plenty of stories about Wright interviewing a notable figure or biking somewhere.
Much of his commentary on the State consists of personal impressions without much research or supporting argument (he's underwhelmed by Buccees, an ultra clean gas station chain, for example, but doesn't explore why Buccees exists, or why it is so popular that texans literally wear buccees t shirts.)
I wasn't turned off by the left-of-center political commentary (though I suspect those right-of-center will be), but I did find it unoriginal: NPR will provide provide you with the same critiques of oil and gas development or the State's politics.
Finally, while the book aspires to answer the question of why the author lives in Texas, it actually attempts to be a memoir and commentary on Texas, but achieves being a loosely organized series of so-so articles. I'm not entirely sure what the point was, and regret the purchase.

Historia
If You're In My Office, It's Already Too Late. James Sexton knows this. After dealing with over 1000 clients whose marriages have dissolved over everything from an ill-advised threesome with the nanny to the uneven division of carpool duties, he also knows all of the what- not-to-dos for couples who want to build - and consistently work to preserve - a lasting, fulfilling relationship. Described by former clients as a "courtroom gunslinger" and "the sociopath you want on your side", Sexton tells the unvarnished truth about relationships. These usually derive from dishonest communication.

Great "How NOT to" Book
Revisado: 06-28-18
Cons: lessons can feel bit repetetive towards the end, but each chapter was either entertaining or insightful.
Pros: uses illustrations from clients to support lots of ideas. Many seem like common sense in hindsight, but I wouldn't have thought of as important: spend time apart. Loving the whole person means loving in spite of flaws. Talk about things that bug you before they become a big deal. Be brutally honest and transparent about your preferences/expectations, instead of stuffing them.

Historia
Forty years ago Israeli psychologists Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky wrote a series of breathtakingly original studies undoing our assumptions about the decision-making process. Their papers showed the ways in which the human mind erred systematically when forced to make judgments about uncertain situations. Their work created the field of behavioral economics, revolutionized Big Data studies, advanced evidence-based medicine, led to a new approach to government regulation, and made Michael Lewis' work possible.

Mostly fascinating
Revisado: 10-08-17
Half story of two unlikely friends exploring psychology and half a high level view of what they found.
My first exposure to Michael Lewis. At times a bit dry, but for the most part fascinating, especially the end where other psychologists begin to put their theories into practice.

Not a feel-good self-help book. Author explains using data and interesting anecdotes all of the different factors that go into success and how to use those factors to define and then achieve your own. Think of this as a short manual of how the world generally works and how to apply those lessons.
