But the story itself didn't really capture me. I thought it was a bio about the Buddha, it's not, It's a story.. which is fine. But it's a bit muddled. the main character is named Siddhartha, a monk on a spiritual quest, but not the Buddha,, Its a not very focused storyline and if there is profundity there I missed it, but the writing itself is beautiful as is the narration.

Well researched, always staying within the facts, with no agenda other than to point out things to help rural America. it's not done in a contentious or demeaning way, that's not the point, it is not trying to cash in on culture warfare or appeal to tribal instincts, nah, nothing like that... as Joe Friday never really said, nonetheless, the authors stick with the facts, only the facts. And while it shines a sometimed bleak and not complimentary light on rural America, it shines an honest light. and, with peace and love, offers a better path forward for rural America. It is true, as the authors note, there is no more loyal constituency in the United States than rural Americans, particularly rural white Americans, are loyal to the Republican party. For decades. in very high numbers, (some polls show consistently at least 85%). And what have they gotten back from the Republican party over these decades? Nothing. Nada. Thats why they feel grieved and buy into the politics of grievance. as long as rightwing media and republican politicians stoke up meaningless wedge culture issues like woke and trans rights and banning books, and keep them convinced that immigrants, democrats, liberals, etc. are their enemies, nothing is going to get better for rural America. Anyway, highly recommend this book to any and everyone.

The author connects acting-out sexual behavior in men to childhood trauma they experienced, and explained how addictive and acting out behavior is rooted exactly there, from unresolved childhood trauma and pain. When a man is acting out the author makes a good case, using many examples of men he has worked with, that the traumatized kid is in charge. He mentions awareness and mindfulness as ways to mature and start being a parent to the inner kid instead of inner kid being in charge. It's a good book, well worth the listen, especially anyone struggling with addictive, self-destructive behavior, for me not quite 5-star worthy.

Willpower is broken down and explained at its most basic level and the book surely does expose some myths regarding many people's perception of willpower, how it works. Some of it seems obvious,ie: if you have a manageable life on a daily basis, you most likely won't find yourself in situations where great willpower must be employed. It was good, a bit dry, but not great. Atomic Habits is a great book, imho, that covers much the same concepts.

Too many references to Christian scripture and to knowing God, for me, this is very distracting from what is otherwise a good book. Take what you like and leave the rest.

There is some good, sound advice in this book. However, be forewarned, if you are one of the overwhelming percentage of people who have tried 12-step recovery and it has not worked for you, in this book youre getting more of the same. Every issue's solution is: go to meetings, get a sponsor, get in a therapy group, reach out, rigorous honesty.... over and over and over again. There's nothing new in this book. If you've gone to 12-step recovery groups for any length of time, you've heard everything in this book. As mentioned, there is plenty of no doubt good advice in this book, but if you're looking for a path other than 12-step recovery, i'd suggest to keep looking.
