it's hard to think of a more basic person than Ellie Arroway. Not to mention the absence of a will. But the plot is great.

if creative, I felt the background noises distracted from the narration, and got overwhelming at times; they'd be better as just an accent, not center stage

The author covers many interesting subjects, like meditation and the practical benefits of meditation, mental habits that reduce stress, and many interesting neurological insights that may help people understand and better use their own minds. However, all of this is clouded by placing far too much existential importance on these experiences, even trying to derive something like a "meaning of life" from them. At least to me, this feels unconvincing and at times, tedious. I think books like "Thinking Fast and Slow", "Meditation for the Fidgety Skeptic", or "The Butterfly and the Net" do the good parts of this book better. On the other hand, as far as "finding the good mental practices within religions," Harris places exclusive emphasis on a single experience, self-transcendence during meditation, far above all other mental states and social habits different religions aim to encourage. If these "spiritual" states are what the author really wanted to focus on, I think his treatment is vastly incomplete without discussions about: Christian concepts of humility; how synchronized movement during prayer increases mirror neuron activity; of the concept of a "god" as a stand-in for "purpose of life", and the consequences, good and bad, that such a frame has for focusing one's efforts in life; of the value many Jews and Christians place on society enduring after them, for religious reasons; of the benefits of formal gratitude practices in many religions (only casually mentioned as "thinking on the bright side"); etc. Without these, the author's definition of "spiritual life" seems vastly incomplete, focused exclusively on the Buddhist tradition. I'm not saying every tradition must be evaluated exactly evenly, but I do think the author didn't learn to see the good sides in non- Buddhist traditions.

As usual, this author has a very realistic engineering process, and terrific buddy story. I recommend it to anyone

Clever, but most short stories are just "sci-fi premise" plus "a twist!"

There's a couple really good ones, too, however.
