The risk these women took
Revisado: 03-07-25
I was disturbed by what the girls encountered upon arrival to the US, yet heartened by the friendships that they had formed on the ship. It was a study in perseverance on behalf of each of them. A story well told.

I disliked the language in certain sections, but suppose it strengthened the case of how evil some can be. The story shows what can be done to “free” a woman in bondage - the carnage left in order for that to happen was by no means the only route to take. However, it made for an exciting journey! Overall a good story.

The author has evoked a moving rendition of those times. Her story kept me attentive throughout the telling, wondering where each action would lead and asking myself, “what would I have done?”

Women can be heroes. When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath hears these words, it is a revelation. Raised in the sun-drenched, idyllic world of Southern California and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing. But in 1965, the world is changing, and she suddenly dares to imagine a different future for herself. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path.

A moving, graphic & revelatory account of those who were there & who survived the VietNam war. Kristin Hannah has outdone herself in this portrayal. Thank you to her for her endeavors, and to those who served.

Historia
When Marilyn Kleinman is caught making out with the rabbi’s son in front of the whole congregation, her parents ship her off to her great-aunt Ada for the summer. If anyone can save their daughter’s reputation, it’s Philadelphia’s strict premier matchmaker. Either that or Marilyn can kiss college goodbye. To Marilyn’s surprise, Ada’s not the humorless septuagenarian her mother described. Not with that platinum-blonde hair, Hermès scarf, and Cadillac convertible. She’s sharp, straight-talking, takes her job very seriously, and abides by her own rules…mostly.

I disliked the recording technic. There were pauses in all the wrong places - like in the middle of sentences as if the reader took a break then continued. It was very disconcerting. However, because it was a good story, I forged on! ☺️

Historia
Rare-book dealer Ashlyn Greer’s affinity for books extends beyond the intoxicating scent of old paper, ink, and leather. She can feel the echoes of the books’ previous owners—an emotional fingerprint only she can read. When Ashlyn discovers a pair of beautifully bound volumes that appear to have never been published, her gift quickly becomes an obsession. Not only is each inscribed with a startling incrimination, but the authors, Hemi and Belle, tell conflicting sides of a tragic romance.

The story tells of how we get things wrong sometimes & choose to hang on to hurtfulness. It is heart wrenching at times, but an interesting premise all the same. Enjoy 😉

Historia
For eighteen year old Lena O'Sullivan, life is predictable and dull. A future of hard work, marriage to a local boy, and a family of her own one day is all she has to look forward to. People from her background know not to expect too much, but Lena yearns for something different. Malachy Berger was different, for him, the world is at his feet. An only child of a wealthy, if peculiar father, a large inheritance, a beautiful house and a fine education are his due. Nobody is in favour of Lena and Malachy’s friendship, but why not? What harm are they doing? Why is everyone so dead set against it?

One stayed at home to raise her children and manage the family apple orchard; the other followed a dream and traveled the world to become a famous photojournalist. Kristin Hannah has outdone herself w/this book! And the narration was excellent. I was transported to Leningrad during a horrible time of unbelievable proportions. I nearly stopped reading at the beginning because I was so upset by the attitudes of the characters. But I persevered and am glad I did. What a story is all I can say!
