Bummer
Revisado: 03-21-23
Mispronounced names, poor editing (repeated sentences), and a strange static sound that interrupts through the recording. Pretty disappointing.

Historia
Long before Laverne Cox appeared on the cover of Time, far removed from drag and ballroom culture, there were countless trans women living and dying as men, most of whom didn't even know they were trans. Diana Goetsch's This Body I Wore chronicles one woman's long journey to coming out, a path that runs parallel to the emergence of the trans community over the past several decades.

This book is like feeling around in the dark for a light switch, and then finding it and turning it on, letting your eyes adjust. Totally engrossing, complicated and wise, beautifully narrated. I loved it.

Historia
In this extraordinary book, Sarah Polley explores what it is to live in one’s body, in a constant state of becoming, learning, and changing. Each of these six essays captures a piece of Polley’s life as she remembers it, while at the same time examining the fallibility of memory, the mutability of reality in the mind, and the possibility of experiencing the past anew, as the person she is now but was not then. As Polley writes, the past and present are in a “reciprocal pressure dance.”

I loved it.
Revisado: 03-03-22
I heard Rachel Cusk say in an interview once that the highest experience a reader can have is the sense of arriving at a truth you didn’t know you knew. I felt that way many times throughout this collection. And Sarah Polley's narration (particularly her impression of Dr. Collins) added another dimension to the experience. I usually prefer to read essays, but I’m glad I listened to this.

Historia
When his mother passed away at the age of 78, Sherman Alexie responded the only way he knew how: He wrote. The result is this stunning memoir. Featuring 78 poems and 78 essays, Alexie shares raw, angry, funny, profane, tender memories of a childhood few can imagine - growing up dirt poor on an Indian reservation, one of four children raised by alcoholic parents. Throughout, a portrait emerges of his mother as a beautiful, mercurial, abusive, intelligent, complicated woman.

Powerful listen

This was an extraordinary book, and one of the best narrations I've listened to. I gained a lot from the experience.

Historia
At the start of the 20th century, Rainer Maria Rilke wrote a series of letters to a young officer cadet, advising him on writing, love, sex, suffering, and the nature of advice itself. These profound and lyrical letters have since become hugely influential for generations of writers and artists of all kinds, including Lady Gaga and Patti Smith. With honesty, elegance, and a deep understanding of the loneliness that often comes with being an artist, Rilke's letters are an endless source of inspiration and comfort.

Beautiful, one disappointment
Revisado: 01-13-19
This was my first "reading" of Letters to a Young Poet, so I can't compare it to other translations, but I thought it was absolutely beautiful. The narration is perfect--Dan Stevens is 100% engaged in the reading--I'll make a point to look for other titles he's narrated. The one disappointment for me if that I was very much looking forward to Lewis Hyde's introduction, which is actually not included.
