Historia
For Will Innis and his daughter, Devlin, the loss was catastrophic. Every day for the past five years, they wonder where she is, if she is - Will's wife, Devlin's mother - because Rachael Innis vanished one night during an electrical storm on a lonely desert highway, and suspected of her death, Will took his daughter and fled. Now, Will and Devlin live under different names in another town, having carved out a new life for themselves as they struggle to maintain some semblance of a family.

Not My Favorite Blake Crouch
Revisado: 10-27-21
Yikes. Full of cliches, flat, annoying characters, and predictable plot twists. I normally love Blake Crouch, but this was a slog. This made me want to write a novel, it made it seem so easy.

Historia
While he's not quite a household name, most people would consider H. Jon Benjamin, the voice-actor star of Archer and Bob's Burgers (and a sentient can of mixed vegetables in 2015's Wet Hot American Summer) a comedy show business success. But he'd like to remind everyone that as great as success can be, failure is also an option. In a hilarious, self-deprecating memoir, Jon lays out some of his many failures in all areas of life, from Work ("wherein I'm unable to deliver a sizzling fajita") to Family ("wherein a trip to PF Chang's fractures a family").

somewhat repetitive, but I enjoyed his stories
Revisado: 10-06-20
I found the premise got a little tiresome after a while, but the parts that were autobiographical were interesting and a lot of fun. Felt a little padded out, but maybe that was the point?

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. But Mark isn't ready to give up yet.

loved story, writing and/or narration cringeworthy
Revisado: 01-23-20
This had me on the edge of my seat the whole time, but I don't know if it was the writer's style (never read anything by him before) or if Will Wheaton was overacting, but I found myself rolling my eyes at the predictable corny jokes. Maybe if I read it in print I'd feel differently. The book was definitely enjoyable, though, and I'll likely try another of Andy Weir's books when I see one that catches my eye.

I bought this on sale and I will likely seek out more by this author. Well paced and well narrated. The narrator did an impressive job of creating a different voice for everyone, not just a cookie cutter male and female voice.

At times, especially in the beginning, it felt somewhat predictable, but it did not do what I expected it to. I stayed engaged throughout. Will look for more by this author and narrator.

A lot of setup and no real payoff. From what little I got, the writing style was fluid and engaging and the narrator was talented.

Historia
Something has been asleep in forty-year-old cattle rancher Aiden Delacorte for a long time. It all comes back in a rush during a hunting trip, when he's suddenly attuned to the animals around him, feeling their pain and fear as if it were his own. But the newfound sensitivity of Aiden's "wake up" has its price. He can no longer sleepwalk through life, holding everyone at arm's length. As he struggles to cope with a trait he's buried since childhood, Aiden falls in love with Gwen, a single mother whose young son bears a burden of his own.

Excellent
Revisado: 04-02-19
I bought this book because of a sale and I've never read anything by Catherine Ryan Hyde before, so I was pleasantly surprised to find that I loved it. The writing was fluid and seamless and the story struck a chord with me.
Nick Podehl's narration was fantastic as well. He did a separate (and convincing) voice for each character and none of them veered into caricature.

Ellie Brown thought she'd finally escaped her stifling hometown of Broadlands, Illinois; med school was supposed to be her ticket out. But when her father has a stroke, she must return home to share his care with her older sister, Amelia, who's busy with her own family. Working as a paramedic, Ellie's days are monotonous, driving an ambulance through streets she'd hoped never to see again.

Engrossing, but unpolished.
Revisado: 03-26-19
I found this to be well-plotted and paced very well, but it had some clumsy dialog. I found the twists predictability as well. That being said, I couldn't put it down.

Historia
An utterly unsentimental journey toward the end of life, Mala is an irreverent exploration of how we live, cope, and survive in the moment. Grounded in Lopez’s distinctive emotional language and sharp humor, this powerful one-woman show dances between doctors and urgent 911 calls, a mother’s growing frailty, and a daughter’s quest for grace - all set during an epic Boston winter. Rather than depict a “right way”, the play opens the door for our universal struggle to support those we love in dying, especially when all we’ve ever focused on is surviving.

Historia
In a world of iPhones and connectivity to social media and email, we are all in constant connection with one another. Then why are so many people feeling burned out, distant from colleagues, and abandoned by family and friends? In this new book from the best-selling author of Running with the Mind of Meditation, the Sakyong uses the basic principles of the Shambhala tradition - meditation and a sincere belief in the inherent wisdom, compassion, and courage of all beings - to help listeners to listen and speak more mindfully.

I listened to a talk given by the Sakyong and I enjoyed his way of speaking. This selection wasn't particularly eye-opening for me, but maybe I'm in the minority.
