I fell in love with Viola as an actress watching "How to get away with murder".
Her life-story is intense and compelling and it is admirable of how she overcame so so much to arrive where she is now.

But the book!... so many repetitions! ... so much jumping through topics, sometimes almost announcing them as a headline only and then on to the next. Sometimes creating an incoherent storyl-ine altogether. Very poor editing (if at all?). It feels like hastily put together and not much thought invested on the narrative. Way too many pages for the actual content delivered.
A pity, because the actual life story and anecdotes are plenty, and would have made for a GREAT memoir, but it needed to be written skillfully to meet the standard of its author as a person and actor.

The way this book is written sounds more like an old lady ranting over her past, repeating herself again and again, getting back again and again to already told parts, missing the essence of what the triumphs were or just flying over them in passing, to then just - again - fall back to common grounds like the reality of actors, blacks, women, black women and poverty. And yes Viola, I see your points! But... you didn't write your book to create a manifesto for those causes. Or did you? It feels to me like you couldn't make up your mind where you wanted to go with this.

So, I say "so so book" to not be too harsh, because I was interested in Viola's story. I am glad I learned about it. But the writing could have been WAY better. Thankfully she reads the book herself, so that creates some dynamic! Otherwise it would have been very boring.

A very well written account of a stretch of China's history. The author mastered the art of illustrating both, the atrocious cruelty of human beings, and the deeply embedded values of courage, resilience, kindness, sacrifice, and love. Eye opening and inspiring.
Very apt reading for our current times when we experience easily a loss of faith in humanity.......

overall good writing although often rambling
Narrator: Zero talent for reading out loud. Only made it to the end because it is a short book.

The book sure makes it clear how competent the author is as well as what a complex life she has handled at all times. It is intense and interesting as well as inspiring to observe the growth and maturity of her in the process of it all.

A bit long with a ton of details about everything, which feels excessive at times, but... in the end contributes to create a full picture of this quite "packed" life that Huma has lived so far. And yes, it shows how many fronts women often have to handle and how capable they are to do so.

I wasn't too thrilled about the Performance for several reasons:
- her way of reading the story, but, in the end I got used to it.
- hearing "HRC" again and again and again was pretty un-nerving in the audio version. Probably because phonetically it is harsh. So the constant repetition of this sound got annoying. (to me)

Lastly this audiobook should have a pdf with the photos she refers to in the acknowledgments. Would have been nice!

And yes: finding Bliss (within) is essential. And being able to "let go, let God", too. I loved the ending prayer in this book of surrender to God's Will and ultimately also, seeing God in All.

Entertaining as well as quite informative.
This book - even though a fiction - offers to the reader a pretty good insight to everything that has been at play in recent Chilean history which isn't fiction at all. A complex reality which leaves you wondering of what, when and how it will ever come out the other side of it all.

Ampuero has crafted an entertaining story through which he offers the reader a deeper understanding of all the layers at play.

I don't think the narrator was the best choice though. It was quite evident - at the beginning of the book - that he might speak the language, but is definitely not familiar with the country and it's customs...

Unless you don't read the first Book this one is a constant replay of the first one which ends up being boring and extremely repetitive. Very unfortunate because the first one had a nice flow in the story which gets lost again and again in this one by the constant "rewinds"...

To a certain extend that even happens with the new aspects of the story when it gets retold by the different characters.

Also, the voices of the readers and their performance (except Sneha Mathan) left a lot to desire for.
I only kept listening because I wanted to find out how it all got resolved. But even that turned out very predictable, in the end...

Read/listen to the first book. Skip this one, unless you want - like me - find out how the story continued... But be ready for a long, tedious sit through of stuff you already know that gets repeated over and over and over again!

A true performance of high quality, as if on screen it wouldn't already have been enough. Well done!

Entertaining but also inspiring. A life lived with the pedal to the metal which, as maturity comes along, also offers depth and wisdom. Not just a lot of glamour, but also real life with all its real challenges and the courage to face them from a base of values, discipline and commitment, as well as integrity.

Oh and Will: NO! The way you introduced your wife to your grandmother was NOT cool nor funny. Maybe creative. I have to grant you that part. But... not very graceful. (Since you asked for our vote on this.... )

Lovely and touching book. True love for each other through thick and thin. Wonderful to hear it in their own voices. I wish I could have embraced them both when finishing the book to say thank you for everything: the music, your devotion to each other and to life, for sharing, for being. God bless you.
