Well done…
Revisado: 01-03-25
The story seems well written & the characters were developed to the extent that great empathy grabbed my heart many times. Life was hard & probably still is for children in placement without family nurturing in their early years.
The author appears to be an excellent writer.
The reader did a superb job as well.

1948, Berlin. World War II has ended and there is supposed to be peace; but Russian troops have closed all access to the city. Roads, railway lines and waterways are blocked and two million people are trapped, relying on airlifts of food, water and medicine to survive. The sharp eyes of the Russian state police watch everything. Anna and Ingrid are both searching for answers - and revenge - in the messy aftermath of war. Both are living in the shadows of a city where the line between right and wrong has become dangerously blurred. But they cannot give up in the search for a lost child.

Well researched
Revisado: 10-11-24
One must pay close attention to follow the text, but worth it. I almost turned it back in 1/3 of the way through and decided to relisten. Then I began to understand the author's transition methods from character to character and present to past which is different from usual. The readers knocked themselves out to make each character seem actually speaking. For some listeners the readers may seem over dramatic, but I enjoyed their efforts. I had no idea the Russians treated the East Germany sector people with such heartless actions after WWII. While USA went back to business as usual, great suffering happened. Thanks for this historical fiction read.

Historia
A scorching August day, and a handsome young man is found dead in his bath. Suicide is not a detective inspector’s business, but Bill Slider’s colleague takes one look at the body and calls in his boss: 'It don’t look right to me, guv.' Slider has to agree. There’s the method of death, a single slash to the jugular; men don’t usually cut. And his wallet and keys are missing. Either this was suicide with concealment in mind - or murder.

Disappointing story, predictable and uninteresting
Revisado: 05-18-24
This author wrote Pack Up Your Troubles and Goodbye Piccadilly which were awesome books. This book falls so short of the author's previous writings that it's hard to believe she wrote this. The story is boring, and I waded through it because someone gifted it to me. I had listed her as one of my favorite authors. If I had been able to return it, I would have.

Sadly Predictable
Revisado: 02-09-24
Kate Forbes narrated the book well. "Redeeming Love" drew me into reading books by Francine Rivers. The story line in this book seemed so predictable that it must not have been from the pen of Francine Rivers. I almost hesitated to rate it 3 stars, as I realize the research and hours invested in writing a fictional story. I appreciate the Christian perspective, yet just because the bent is Christian should not disturb excellence in stories.

A riveting story RE overcoming life events
Revisado: 12-05-22
This girl will continue to warm your heart as you the reader live and die with her life struggle. The writer does an excellent job of weaving events in and out holding your interest throughout the book. You do not want to miss this novel. I usually give wonderful reviews as I return wretched books after a few chapters. I have been tricked a few times hoping until the end, yet I admit to being a snob who demands excellent stories only. This one is tops.

Historia
On November 22, 1963, three shots rang out in Dallas, President Kennedy died, and the world changed. What if you could change it back? In this brilliantly conceived tour de force, Stephen King - who has absorbed the social, political, and popular culture of his generation more imaginatively and thoroughly than any other writer - takes listeners on an incredible journey into the past and the possibility of altering it.

Excellent historical fiction of the times
Revisado: 12-05-22
The reader will gain many perspectives from a riveting portrayal of the Dallas episode that unfolded on November 22, 1963. The author's research into those years held my "willing suspension of disbelief" in tact. Many times when authors delve into the 50's and 60's with a fictional tale, they go too far off "the way it was" during those decades which leaves me distracted by incorrect details. Don't miss this one!

I had read individual books to my current adult children when they were younger, yet hearing the stories once more one after another helped me grasp the entire symbolic narration. The reader will enjoy a nostalgic adventure back into Narnia land with one adventure leading to another.

Great read.
Revisado: 12-05-22
The story reads from the perspective of a child. She will captivate the reader with her spunk. The events play out in an interesting way to reveal a sign of the early 60's era. The book seems well researched as some books depicting the times appear inaccurate from my personal experience. I applaud the author for examples of cruel people regardless of culture or race or whatever excuse a cruel person uses to justify his or her actions.

Historia
This lush novel, set in 1766 England and America, evokes an era ripe with riot and revolution, from the teeming streets of London to the sprawling grounds of a Virginia plantation. Mack McAsh burns with the desire to escape his life of slavery in Scottish coal mines while Lizzie Hallim is desperate to shed a life of sheltered subjugation to her spineless husband. United in America, their only chance for freedom lies beyond the Western frontier - if they're brave enough to take it.

KEN FOLLET'S BEST!!!
Revisado: 11-22-22
Anyone who has read a Ken Follet historical fiction novel may wonder how any of his awesome stories can be tagged "best." This story holds your attention during the entire journey. It has everything. I could hardly wait to go on road trips to listen. Each chapter spins in your mind. I had no idea how grueling a coalmine was in the early days of Scotland and England. I knew there was a cast system, yet the prevailing concept that upper class people considered themselves appointed by God to hold the lower class in bondage seemed daunting. Imagine thinking that any person has no value as a human being. I began to realize how close the U.S. appears to be heading back in this same direction..."You will own nothing and love it." The idea that a human must be treated like an animal instead of given an opportunity to better himself appalled me. The cruel concept of slavery may be on the cusp of our society once again.
