Genji is stationed on a ship in orbit when humanity’s factional extremism on the planet reaches a boiling point, and she witnesses the utter annihilation of Earth. Pillars of reality with a sci-fi skin
Revisado: 04-01-25
Its not awful but it feels like a retelling of the Pillars of Reality series just with a sci-fi coat of paint. Its a PG romance where the MC is on the run for her life against the establishment who portrays her as the ultimate evil even though every action she takes proves over and over again that she's really the good guy. The plot here feels really contrived too, like why they are hunting her is nonsensical. She's also got this deep rooted sense of being an oppressed victim the entire time which is grating by the end because it seems to keep coming up. She's flabbergasted constantly that people she meet don't hate her outright because of her appearance.
I wont be buying more of these since i already have enjoyed this story in Campbell's previous work. But if you haven't heard those yet this is probably a decent one to listen to if you like sci fi more than fantasy.

Spicy Chips?
Revisado: 03-26-25
Why would a bird prefer spicey chips specifically? Birds are biologically immune to the effects of capsaicin and therefore wouldn't really be able to tell the difference between normal chips or "extra spicey" chips.
other than that, pretty good.

Gertrude, Eugenia, and Dee-Dee Porch do not belong. They don’t belong in the snooty town of Antiquarium, where all girls have to go to etiquette school and the only dog allowed is the bichon frise. They don’t belong with their adoptive family, where all their cousins are named Lavinia and their Aunt has more brooches than books. And they certainly don’t belong at Mrs. Wintermacher’s etiquette school—they’re far more interested in science. After getting kicked out of the last etiquette school that would take them, the girls expect to be sent away for good...

A bit over the top
Revisado: 10-03-24
Every line is a joke or a pun and over acted. Its still enjoyable to listen to. It seems like Ms Mckinnon is working really hard looking for laughs and so it is amusing at times but never very funny. I'm not sure if this is a kids book or not. Plot wise its definitely shallow enough to be a children's story but the language would be very difficult for 13 and under to understand. If you are a fan of Kate and her characters, Get it, you will like it.

Gets too big, looses its charm
Revisado: 08-29-24
Loved the first 2 books in this series. The problem with all these progression litrpg series is they get too "big" too fast. this one seemed to do that. the sense of intrigue and discovery of the card systems and new powers falls away in this novel and its all about politics and fighting against this one big bad guy. I'm not sure if I will give the next book a try or not.

Historia
The man who became known as Esrahaddon is reported to have destroyed the world’s greatest empire—but there are those who believe he saved it. Few individuals are as divisive, but all agree on three facts: He was exiled to the wilderness, hunted by a goblin priestess, and sentenced to death by a god—all before the age of eight. How he managed to survive and why people continued to fear his name a thousand years later has always been a mystery...until now.

So disappointed.
Revisado: 08-31-23
I have waited a while after finishing this book to write this review as I wanted to have time to let it all sink in and reflect on my thoughts. After this waiting period I have decided that I am deeply disappointed in this offering from Mr. Sullivan.
I have read all of the books and short stories set in this universe and have loved them all. I love this book too just for extending this world a bit, but overall I'm very disappointed in what is ultimately delivered.
I think most of this negativity comes from how much of the story was skipped. This one book could easily have been turned into 3 books of the same length. Every time I felt like we were getting to a good interesting part of the story the scene shifted and skipped in time, sometimes many many years ahead.
Knowing where these characters and world needed to end up, I knew going in the rough shape the story would have to take in order to set up the next book in the timeline, the book that was published first in this universe. What I was hoping for were the details about how all that happened, the specifics of how the people I knew only from backstory in the other books ended up exactly where they were in those other books. Instead of that we get this cliffs notes version with all those details cut out.
Especially the ending, the ending clinched this rating for me. The ending was pretty consistent with the rest of the book, I should've anticipated the no-details ending based entirely from the context of the rest of the story. The part that would've been the most interesting detail for the entire story, the part that would have answered so many questions... it's just not there, the book just ends and it was such a let down i actually exclaimed a profanity out loud as i heard "The end." With an audio book it's a much more negative experience than in a paper book as you can't feel the pages thinning and can't see that last line approaching as you read, it's so much more surprising and jarring to an audio listener. It's worse than a cliffhanger in the middle of a series because this is likely the last book we will get in this world.
After proclaiming in my Farilane book review that the penultimate book in this universe was likely my new favorite book of all time it just magnifies my overall disappointment with this book.

"A publisher in New York asked me to write down what I know about the Greek gods, and I was like, 'Can we do this anonymously?' Because I don't need the Olympians mad at me again. But if it helps you to know your Greek gods, and survive an encounter with them if they ever show up in your face, then I guess writing all this down will be my good deed for the week." So begins Percy Jackson's Greek Gods, in which the son of Poseidon adds his own magic - and sarcastic asides - to the classics.

like other people have already said this one looses everything that made the earlier books great. This series went from books I couldn't put down to one where I could barely get to the next chapter. by the end its just a chore. I already bought the next book but might ask for a return and not start it.

Really good, rushed ending
Revisado: 03-21-23
I really enjoyed this book. At first I didn't like the journaling style of it but I got used to it. It was obviously done as a sort of tribute of the lovecraft storytelling style. The interludes were a nice break from the always-in-past-tense journal entries. Having the journal entries be a daily accounting kept the story suspenseful.
my only critique was how quickly and abruptly the story concluded. like the author just wanted to get it over with. It was still good and look forward to listening to more in the series.
The narrator was decent, not my favorite. I found myself wishing for the narrator of 14, another cthulhu leaning book, to be the voice here as well.

Just not good
Revisado: 10-05-22
Its a book of anecdotes. A book that outlines some generic ADHD problems but doesn't really talk through solutions much. Its very much like its just pandering to people who want to fit into a box and giving them a box to fit into. The author says she has ADHD and so most discussions talk about "us" and it comes off as more conversational than helpful.
Its hard to describe for me why I felt this book was a waste of time. If you have ADHD you wont really get much insight from this book. If you don't have it and are reading it to try to understand and interact and help someone with ADHD this book wont help you with that either and in fact might make you think you have ADHD.
Thinking about it a bit it has a very horoscope feel. Tell someone they are a type and then give them a daily horoscope and sure enough they see themselves fitting those attributes and seeing those horoscopes as accurate even though it really could fit anyone. I feel like if someone without diagnosable ADHD reads this and sees some similarities in some of the ways they experience life will suddenly feel like they must have ADHD and all their issues could be solved by meds.
