I have to say, I rarely leave reviews but made an exception here as I thoroughly enjoyed this suspenseful, imaginative, funny & heartwarming twisted tome.

If you enjoy the fanciful fantastic fantasy of witches, fairies, curses & more, this is a great book for you. It reminds me of some of Alix E. Harrow’s works & she is my favorite fantasy author, having read all of her books at least once (and ‘The Once & Future Witches 4 times since it’s Oct 2020 release. So, as an aside, I wholeheartedly recommend her as well.

Back to this book, it manages to be both suspenseful and lighthearted with some rough around the edges & flawed characters that you come to care about.

Excellent read. Also recommend this author’s ‘Emily Wilde’ series. Top notch!

I love all things that are feminist and witchy and this is no different. If like the works of Sarah Addison Allen or Alix E. Harrow, you’ll enjoy this.

Great story. The reader did an excellent job with various voices, but this is a book about witches so the Sabbats should be pronounced correctly. It really took me out of the story every time the reader mispronounced Samhain. It's pronounced sow-when, and a producer or technical editor of some kind really should have caught this.

More Complete Telling of the H. H. Holmes Saga

This particular book seems to have been fact checked further than other tellings of Holmes' doings.

One encounter specifically, H.H. Holmes killing of the pharmacist/physician widow who wasn't. I've heard that story time and again, but knowing the physician was a woman who outlived Holmes by 4 decades and her husband survived as well, is an example of the authenticity lended to this book via the author's good detective work.

Also, I really enjoyed that discussions of deaths possibly caused by Holmes, the facts around them and the "mixed bag" presentation. I'd rather that than just assuming and carrying on.

So far, having read several treatises regarding Holmes, including Devil in the White City, I'd put this book at the top, without reservation.

It's not a question of whether to listen but of how quick to do it.

Today is March 25th. I just lost my dog of 16.5 years on March 19th. I've had this book on my bookshelf since it came out but for whatever reason hadn't read it. The tears I've shed these past weeks have made reading anything difficult so I decided an audiobook was how I wanted to experience the novel.

This is a dog lover's book.

I'm sure before ever listening to the sample, you know this book features a dog, so I don't think it's much of a spoiler to say that my Baxter suffered from similar problems as this Novel's Enzo and for me, it made this piece all the more bittersweet.

If you consider your dog (or dogs) a true family member and a wise old soul, you will enjoy this book. If you've read any other reviews, you'll by now know a tissue will be handy by the end, but my bet is that you'll relate to Enzo and his family more, laugh more and love more than you will cry. But, there will be tears.

Maybe it's good I read this after the passing of my own furry child, maybe it's not but that choice is in the past and I feel as though this work of fiction has helped me in my grief more than the sentiments of some friends and family members.

Regardless of where you and your pupper(s) are in life, you'll enjoy this novel.

"Your car goes where your eyes go" ~Enzo/Denny
