This was definitely written for kids--the characters were shallow, annoying, predictable, BUT the idea of the story was really good & original. Would have loved to see this adapted into a James Rollins or Preston & Child novel.

90% smart sci-fi action!! 10% pulp romance???

Really enjoyed most of this book, but it felt like two different novels. 90% was a great Crighton-like adventure, but that was sandwiched between opening & closing chapters that read like a Stephanie Plum story. Aside from that... good stuff, I will probably check out more by this author. Just try to ignore the blatant Lost tributes (Nick is basically Jack, Shaw is Sawyer... at least there wasn't a song by Driveshaft).

Nice to visit the crew, but not enough sci-fi.

Nice to visit the Voyager crew again, but there just was not enough sci-fi amidst all the cliche post-2k dogma ( sorry, trying not to objectify a people group by their age). One or two other reviews mentioned that it felt a little bit like a soap opera; must admit, I had to agree. That being said, I did enjoy the actual Trek story & characters.

This was clearly written for a youth audience, and screams of Harry Potter, but I still really enjoyed it. Some of the write-ups had me concerned that it might be a musical, but it was just a tiny smattering of orchestra here & there.

Classic, I suppose, but...

So many of these old books just do not hold up. Perhaps they were written for a less astute audience. Perhaps it is just a conflict with the pacing at which modern stories are told, and to which modern audiences are accustomed. At least it was free.

Too much social commentary; too little sci-fi.

The sci-fi was OK when I could find it, but it is so buried under sophomore level politically correct diatribe that I had to return it. Rarely have I ever given up on a book before finishing it, but it was just that bad.

Plenty of Firefly & other underground pop culture references. Tom Baldwin was a perfect choice.
