Historia
It’s not easy making the career jump from office-supplies-store middle manager to heroic interdimensional adventurer. At least, Jason tries to be heroic, but it's hard to be good when all your powers are evil. He’ll face off against cannibals, cultists, wizards, monsters...and that’s just on the first day. He’s going to need courage, he’s going to need wit, and he’s going to need some magic powers of his own. But first, he’s going to need pants.

Just a bleh book?
Revisado: 04-26-24
This book wasn’t for me and that’s fine. I just found the pacing slow and the plot and setup boring for me. Takes a LONG time to get ‘going’ and then after that it’s only mildly interesting.

Historia
The Poisonwood Bible is a story told by the wife and four daughters of Nathan Price, a fierce, evangelical Baptist who takes his family and mission to the Belgian Congo in 1959. They carry with them everything they believe they will need from home, but soon find that all of it - from garden seeds to Scripture - is calamitously transformed on African soil. What follows is a suspenseful epic of one family’s tragic undoing and remarkable reconstruction over the course of three decades in postcolonial Africa.

Outrageously boring
Revisado: 11-04-23
Not sure what to even say. I tried to give this book a try after I read demon copperhead. I tried and this just doesn’t quite get there. Just not very interesting or catching to me in the first 2 hrs of listening.

One narrator is great the other is horrendous
Revisado: 06-06-23
I tried this book a few times and I couldn’t get past the narrator for the grandmother. The vocal fry or whatever makes her very difficult to understand and so it completely spoiled whatever plot there was. I have up after a while. Shame too because I think this could have been a good book.

Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

This is a masterpiece.
Revisado: 03-20-23
Honestly I don’t really know how to describe it. This is one of those books where the narration and writing work lock step with one another. The result is an unforgettable transport into the world of Appalachia and the world of Damon. I listened to it all in about 2 days. And I did not regret.
It is something to experience though it is not for everyone.
Some people may not like how gritty and real it is. Others may bemoan that it’s derivative of David Copperfield. All reasonable but I can’t recommend this enough. Worth every hour I spent listening.

Historia
For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand.

Beautiful story
Revisado: 01-24-23
This book and this performance is very close to what I would consider perfection.
First the story. It’s simple, lays itself out slowly and makes you care deeply about Kya. She’s a woman of quiet intelligence shaped by loneliness and fear of attachment and her undying love for the marsh. And so that attachment and care makes me want to continue on with the story and hear more of her story. And it succeeds. Nowhere did I find the story to drag.
What kicks this production into a new level though is the narration. I feel a lot of the time mediocre performances come off as literally people reading the story to you. Which is fine but the narrators voices and characterizations make the narration disappear and you can hear Kya speaking through her. Again that same quiet, contemplative woman with subtle intelligence and fear of attachment.
Overall 5/5 in all catagories. Well deserved.

Historia
The remarkable story of an ordinary man who was transformed when a traumatic injury left him with an extraordinary gift. No one sees the world as Jason Padgett does. Water pours from the faucet in crystalline patterns, numbers call to mind distinct geometric shapes, and intricate fractal patterns emerge from the movement of tree branches, revealing the intrinsic mathematical designs hidden in the objects around us. Yet Padgett wasn’t born this way. Twelve years ago, he had never made it past pre-algebra. But a violent mugging forever altered the way his brain works.

didn't like it.

Couldn't get past the first hour. The narrator (not the performance) of the book seemed overly pretentious . Was incredibly grating and obnoxious.

Historia
Thor's hammer is missing...again. The thunder god has a disturbing habit of misplacing his weapon - the mightiest force in the Nine Worlds. But this time the hammer isn't just lost, it has fallen into enemy hands. If Magnus Chase and his friends can't retrieve the hammer quickly, the mortal worlds will be defenseless against an onslaught of giants. Ragnarok will begin. The Nine Worlds will burn. Unfortunately, the only person who can broker a deal for the hammer's return is the gods' worst enemy, Loki - and the price he wants is very high.

Fast, monotone performance. I listened on 0.7 speed and it is the most reasonable speed imo.
