The narration for this book was really good. It's rare, in my experience of listening, for female narrators to pull off male character voices, but Caitlin Kelly pulls it off convincingly. As for the story, it's typical of Karen's books, and why I read and listen to them often. The MC is young with a strong character, but kind and compassionate (a consistency in Karen's books that I love). Plenty of action. and a love interest that actually acts his age. It's another big plus that I love about Karen's books. Her male romantic characters, who are hundreds of years old, are way more mature and believable than in any other series I've ever read. Not to mention, a great cast of characters and beings. Karen Lynch builds a world that is rich with wonderful characters. Each scene builds the story and characters, with lots of clues along the way. I highly recommend this book and series. Karen, please keep them coming, and don't change your style of writing, it's definitely your niche.

I enjoyed the story, although didn't appreciate that the main character, who is supposed to be the "best" detective, didn't see the obvious coming. But, that's minor. The narration, however, was fantastic. It makes such a difference when you have male and female voices, and Adam Gold was great with the different accents. Good narration just makes a world of difference!

The Narration Just Didn't Work For Me

This is a story that I really like. It's unique in a sort of Jane Austin meets fantasy kinda way. The world building is intriguing and you get a good feel for the different characters. And the romance is sweet, while the female lead grows into her strength. The narration, however, was aweful. With all due respect for all the effort that goes into these audio books, but the main male character's voice was cringe worthy. The narrator made him sound like a stuffy old man. NOT even close to what I would have imagined his voice to be more like. That, and the narration was really slow. If these could be redone, I would recommend a narration duo for female and male character voices. Adam Gold or Nick Cracknell would be great options for male voices. They both have a great range of accents and wonderful dramatic delivery when needed. I was so looking forward to owning and listening to this series in audio....it seriously burst my bubble.
