Historia
The mutiny on HMS Bounty, in the South Pacific on 28 April 1789, is one of history's truly great stories - a tale of human drama, intrigue and adventure of the highest order - and in the hands of Peter FitzSimons it comes to life as never before. Commissioned by the Royal Navy to collect breadfruit plants from Tahiti and take them to the West Indies, the Bounty's crew found themselves in a tropical paradise. Five months later, they did not want to leave.

Revisado: 07-05-25
A fantastic account of the mutiny and all that came before and after. I've become a hardcore Fitzsimon's fan after Batavia and The Catalpa Rescue, and can't wait to start his tale of Captain Cook next.
Fitzsimon is a readable historian, at once entertaining and informing the inquisitive. His style is engaging, his facts well-researched, and even surmised dialogue feels natural to the narrative as it's known.

Historia
When Arkham Advertiser reporter Andy van Nortwick receives a mysterious film reel in the mail, with a simple note: "Maude Brion is very much alive!", he steps onto a path which will lead him to the brink of madness. Brion, the famous actress and film director, vanished a year ago on an ill-fated expedition into the Amazon rainforest, delving into the legend of the Spider Queen. Thrilled by the prospect of his big break, Nortwick swings the funds to launch a rescue mission. He gathers a team of explorers and a keen folklorist to bring back Brion and cement his reputation.

Excellent performance and premise. Interesting characters and fun pulpy treatment of the Mythos. Could have done without the tobacco ads though. Just a personal turnoff.

Historia
It was the autumn of 1628, and the Batavia, the Dutch East India Company's flagship, was loaded with a king's ransom in gold, silver, and gems for her maiden voyage to Java. The Batavia was the pride of the company's fleet, a tangible symbol of the world's richest and most powerful commercial monopoly. She set sail with great fanfare, but the Batavia and her gold would never reach Java.

Inspiring and hearbreaking all at once
Revisado: 05-13-23
I discovered JMS through Spider-Man, but after reading this book I'm going to add everything he's ever done to my list. His story is inspiring to all those of us who call ourselves writers, but especially to those who have been told no. He overcame abuse, ADD, poor eyesight, being raised by a literal war criminal, and a generally difficult era to become one of the most successful storytellers of our time. You may find *success* more difficult in today's incredibly crowded field, but your obstacles certainly are no greater than his... so get to work!

Historia
While many people have heard of the battle at Rorke’s Drift, (featured in the film Zulu), and the one at Isandlwana that preceded it, few outside of South Africa know of an earlier and equally bloody conflict. Under a tyrannical king, the Zulu nation defended its territory with ruthless efficiency against white settlers. Only a naïve English vicar, with his family and some translators, are permitted to live in the king’s capital. It is into this cleric’s household that Thomas Flashman finds himself, as a most reluctant guest.

Another excellent adventure
Revisado: 11-16-22
I'm a fan of all Brightwell's works, and this is no exception. Besides the intriguing characters, derring do, and precarious situations, Brightwell nails the flow and drama of the real-life encounters and battles Flashman engages in.
I'm fortunate enough to have walked many of these battlefields, and the author's mastery of the terrain and feel of the places makes the reader feel they're there in Thomas's shoes.
I can't recommend these stories highly enough for any student of historical fiction.

Historia
When other men might be looking forward to a well-earned retirement to enjoy their ill-gotten gains, Flashman finds himself once more facing overwhelming odds and ruthless enemies, while standing (reluctantly) shoulder to shoulder with some of America’s greatest heroes. A trip abroad to avoid a scandal at home leaves him bored and restless. They say the devil makes work for idle hands, and Lucifer surpassed himself this time, as Thomas is persuaded to visit the newly independent country of Texas.

Historia
Beginning in the summer of 1903, an insidious crime wave filled New York City, and then the entire country, with fear. The children of Italian immigrants were kidnapped, and dozens of innocent victims were gunned down. Bombs tore apart tenement buildings. Judges, senators, Rockefellers, and society matrons were threatened with gruesome deaths. The perpetrators seemed both omnipresent and invisible. Their only calling card: the symbol of a black hand.

Great book but more about Petrosino
Revisado: 11-13-21
It's really a book about Joseph Petrosino. He certainly deserves it and a whole lot more than the minor accolades history has given him. But the book does give you a good idea of what the black hand was like, how terrible they were, and how ignoring them gave us a century or more of corruption in our major cities. Maybel we should be learning from them today.

Historia
In the spring of 1839, Britain invaded Afghanistan for the first time. Nearly 20,000 British and East India Company troops poured through the high mountain passes and re-established on the throne Shah Shuja ul-Mulk. On the way in, the British faced little resistance. But after two years of occupation, the Afghan people rose in answer to the call for jihad and the country exploded into violent rebellion. The First Anglo-Afghan War ended in Britain's greatest military humiliation of the 19th century.

Tragic story excellently told
Revisado: 06-09-21
It took me just a bit to get into it, but once I did I couldn't wait to listen again. I knew the basics but the details of the first Anglo Afghan war are fascinating, complex, tragic, and incredibly interesting.
As a side note, stay for the research acknowledgements at the end. It not only shines a light on the extent of Dalrymple's thoroughness but also illustrates how dangerous the area remains.

Historia
Everywhere hailed as a masterpiece of historical adventure, this enthralling narrative recounts the experiences of 12 American sailors who were shipwrecked off the coast of Africa in 1815, captured by desert nomads, sold into slavery, and subjected to a hellish two-month journey through the bone-dry heart of the Sahara. The ordeal of these men - who found themselves tested by barbarism, murder, starvation, death, dehydration, and hostile tribes that roamed the desert on camelback - is made indelibly vivid in this gripping account of courage, brotherhood, and survival.

Historia
Auckland Island is a godforsaken place in the middle of the Southern Ocean, 285 miles south of New Zealand. With year-round freezing rain and howling winds, it is one of the most forbidding places in the world. To be shipwrecked there means almost certain death. In 1864, Captain Thomas Musgrave and his crew of four aboard the schooner Grafton wreck on the southern end of the island. Utterly alone in a dense coastal forest, plagued by stinging blowflies and relentless rain, Captain Musgrave inspires his men to take action.
