Historia
In 1945, the Soviet Union controlled half of Europe and was a founding member of the United Nations. By 1991, it had an army four million strong, 5,000 nuclear-tipped missiles, and was the second biggest producer of oil in the world. But soon afterward, the union sank into an economic crisis and was torn apart by nationalist separatism. Its collapse was one of the seismic shifts of the 20th century.

A excellent book about the institutional suicide of the USSR
Revisado: 10-05-24
While I believe that it is impossible to write a completely unbiased book about a topic as decisive as the Soviet Union, this book does a good job of providing a straightforward and neutral analysis of the collapse of the Soviet union. This book doesn’t fall into the trap of reproducing the western propaganda about the inevitable collapse of the “evil empire” and does a good job of highlighting the internal and external causes of the collapse.

Historia
From 2010 to 2020, more people participated in protests than at any other point in human history. Yet we are not living in more just and democratic societies as a result. IF WE BURN is a stirring work of history built around a single, vital question: How did so many mass protests lead to the opposite of what they asked for?

Essential reading for all political activists and serious leftists
Revisado: 03-27-24
This book is Essential reading for all political activists and serious leftists. It provides a nuanced global historical analysis of the past decade. Obviously, the authors intention is to focus on a global perspective, and the author left out the US however I wish that the author had covered the protest movements within the US as well. Maybe a future book.

Historia
In Unmasking Autism, Dr. Devon Price shares their personal experience with masking and blends history, social science research, prescriptions, and personal profiles to tell a story of neurodivergence that has thus far been dominated by those on the outside looking in. For Dr. Price and many others, Autism is a deep source of uniqueness and beauty. Unfortunately, living in a neurotypical world means it can also be a source of incredible alienation and pain.

Historia
Volume One of Stalin begins and ends in January 1928 as Stalin boards a train bound for Siberia, about to embark upon the greatest gamble of his political life. He is now the ruler of the largest country in the world, but a poor and backward one, far behind the great capitalist countries in industrial and military power, encircled on all sides. In Siberia, Stalin conceives of the largest program of social reengineering ever attempted.

Through and detailed historical analysis of Stalin’s Rise
Revisado: 01-21-24
Stalin is a complex, controversial and frequently misunderstood historical figure and while it is impossible to write a completely objective historical analysis of Stalin Kotkin is a good attempt at a neutral analysis of Stalin. Kotkin’s is a bourgeoisie historian with a liberal/capitalist bias but nonetheless does a great job analyzing the animating contradictions of Stalin and the Soviet system he was integral in developing. This book is super detailed and seeks to contextualize the Soviet Union and Stalin both historically and geopolitically. This book is great if you want to know about literally everything that happened leading up to Stalin rise to power. if you were looking for a more casual overview, you will find this book too detailed.

Border and Rule explores a number of seemingly disparate global geographies with shared logics of border rule that displace, immobilize, criminalize, exploit, and expel migrants and refugees. With her keen ability to connect the dots, Harsha Walia demonstrates how borders divide the international working class and consolidate imperial, capitalist, and racist nationalist rule.

One of best books of the year
Revisado: 09-21-23
This book is really fantastic and progressively gets better as you read it. The author does a really good job of connecting the border to its role in the political economy of capitalism and imperialism. The books global perspective taught me a lot about border regimes that are much further away from me , in ways that allowed me to draw valuable lessons for the border struggle in my country.

Historia
At the heart of Africa is Congo, a country the size of Western Europe, bordering nine other nations, that since 1996 has been wracked by a brutal and unstaunchable war in which millions have died. And yet, despite its epic proportions, it has received little sustained media attention. In this deeply reported book, Jason K. Stearns vividly tells the story of this misunderstood conflict through the experiences of those who engineered and perpetrated it.

Essential reading for those interested African politics
Revisado: 07-28-23
Great book about the Congolese civil wars. Warning, this book is tragic and violent but does not get lost in the carnage of the war and consistently highlights the politics and social political structures, which produced the violence of Congo civil wars. The author does a great job of interviewing people and all sides of the conflict and tries his best to bring this multiplicity of narratives into a cohesive story of the conflict. The narrative and chronology of the war is at times difficult to follow. I also think that the author minimizes the role of western imperialism and neocolonialism in the conflict and focuses more on the internal contradictions of the Congo’s politics.

Historia
From the sprawling barricadas of Lima to the garbage hills of Manila, urbanization has been disconnected from industrialization, even economic growth. Davis portrays a vast humanity warehoused in shantytowns and exiled from the formal world economy. He argues that the rise of this informal urban proletariat is a wholly original development unforeseen by either classical Marxism or neoliberal theory. Are the great slums, as a terrified Victorian middle class once imagined, volcanoes waiting to erupt?

This book was really good and progressively gets better throughout. I particularly loved the sections on slum ecology, structural adjustment programs and the role of NGOs and international organizations like the IMF in slums. The book does a great job of highlighting the global structures that produce and reproduce slum conditions all around the world, while also spotlighting unique situations peoples living in different slums face. My only issue with the book and it’s a minor issue is that sometimes it was difficult retain information from some of the denser sections. But 8.8/10 would read again, would recommend to a friend.

Historia
The successful 1776 revolt against British rule in North America has been hailed almost universally as a great step forward for humanity. But the Africans then living in the colonies overwhelmingly sided with the British. In this trailblazing book, Gerald Horne shows that in the prelude to 1776, the abolition of slavery seemed all but inevitable in London, delighting Africans as much as it outraged slaveholders, and sparking the colonial revolt.

Historia
One of Freud's central achievements was to demonstrate how unacceptable thoughts and feelings are repressed into the unconscious, from where they continue to exert a decisive influence over our lives. This volume contains a key statement about evidence for the unconscious and how it works, as well as major essays on all the fundamentals of mental functioning. Freud explores how we are torn between the pleasure principle and the reality principle, how we often find ways both to express and to deny what we most fear and why certain men need fetishes for their sexual satisfaction.

Historia
Underneath the patina of civilized society lies the Sadean demimonde: a bundle of lustful appetites fueled by momentary impulse and a desire for unfettered indulgence. And the target of this savagery: Justine de Bertole, a pious and virginal heroine. Grotesque, inhumane, and compelling, Sade’s novel overturns Rousseau’s views of the social contract, and the common trope that punishment only visits sinners, to deliver a passionate treatise on good and evil, virtue and sin.

If you are interested in sade it’s a decent read, but the book is long, repetitive and boring. There is also a ton triggering and sexually violent content so be warned. I wanted this book to be good but it just isn’t. I can’t recommend this to the casual reader who doesn’t have a academic interest in Sade’s work
