Historia
Drawing on her life’s work, Bettina Love persuasively argues that educators must teach students about racial violence, oppression, and how to make sustainable change in their communities through radical civic initiatives and movements. She argues that the US educational system is maintained by and profits from the suffering of children of color. Instead of trying to repair a flawed system, educational reformers offer survival tactics in the forms of test-taking skills, acronyms, grit labs, and character education, which Love calls the educational survival complex.

Excellent text for (and from) an educator
Revisado: 03-27-23
As a mid-career educator myself, I found Ms. Love's directness and insights valuably clarifying. I've been away from America many years and a sea of change has occurred in my absence. Reading in the papers is not living it day-to-day. Ms. Love's work shares both rich perspective and specific ideas for positive impact that I am grateful for. Looking forward to her next book Punished for Dreaming, which comes out in September.
Also, I appreciated the closing recommendation of When Grit Isn't Enough that was tagged onto the end of the credits so I could continue in the same line of thinking in the interim.
Cheers ~ great work.

Historia
The history of China is as rich and strange as that of any country on earth. Yet for many, China’s history remains unknown, or known only through the stylized images that generations in the West have cherished or reviled as truth. With his command of character and event - the product of 30 years of research and reflection in the field - Spence dispels those myths in a powerful narrative. Over four centuries of Chinese history, Spence fashions the astonishing story of the effort to achieve a modern China.

Pronunciations of Chinese names are insultingly bad
Revisado: 03-19-22
This book is just obscene.
The reader is using a posh voice that is clearly mad about the resulting loss of the Opium wars.
His incapable or directly malicious pronunciation of names, both places and people is simply unacceptable.
Frederick Davidson: You have done a disservice to history by providing such an abominable reading.
It’s embarrassing, on behalf of Western Culture, that we are still this incapable of moving on.
I wonder if this guy is still sore about “Burma” as well.
AMAZON: PLEASE REDO THIS BOOK.
NEW READER PLEASE.
The book itself is a powerfully important and valuable one, written by a remarkably notable historian. To hear it in such a format is sad.
I’ll be returning this directly. I simply cannot continue listening to it.

Historia
Between 1348 and 1715, western Europe was fraught with turmoil, beset by the Black Plague, numerous and bitter religious wars, and frequent political revolutions and upheavals. Yet the Europe that emerged from this was vastly different from the Europe that entered it. By the start of the 18th century, Europe had been revitalized and reborn in a radical break with the past that would have untold ramifications for human civilization.

This course was incredibly informative and well put together. I listened to it with another from the same production company about the same time but in another area as additions to a university course on the era. They complimented each other very well. Thanks for it!

Historia
Was Christopher Columbus's voyage to the Americas in 1492 the most important event in the history of the world? Professor Eakin's provocative answer is a resounding "Yes" - as he presents his case in an intriguing series of 24 lectures. These thoughtful lectures will remind you that when Columbus completed his voyage, he found a people unlike any he had ever known, living in a land unmentioned in any of the great touchstones of Western knowledge. You'll learn how the European world, animated by the great dynamic forces of the day, Christianity and commercial capitalism, reacted to Columbus's discovery.

I enjoyed this title, along with the course that covers the same time period in Europe as I studied a course around this era’s literature for credits at university this past term. The three textual sources together were a great set to learn from and I feel my awareness of the era has come a long way. This title was great at giving insights to actions and details where the others left off.

Worth it ~
Revisado: 09-11-21
This book lent a good bit of perspective and vocabulary to me considering the modern dialectic around the discussion of current American society, I’m thankful for that.
Performance note: the author reads this book to the benefit of implied stresses etc. However, his cadence is somewhat distractingly staccato and it took me a while to get used to listening. Glad I stuck through. Very good text.

Great-ish
Revisado: 02-02-19
Really, glad I listened to this book, and I’ll probably listen to it again... My only meh-factor is that there’s a lot of “your amigdula did this” and “Your prefrontal cortex did that” only, I’m simplifying it for my sake as I retell it. Hey. Really, I’m game. I get it. It’s not all nurture, got some nature involved, but seriously, that was a lot of science to wait through the get the useful bits. . . Lots of those.
Guy really knows what he’s talking about. But this book was a bit heavy on the science. Maybe the second or third time through it’ll be less of a distraction. Honestly, I felt easier around others as soon as I started listening to this book. It’s a good bit. I recommend it.

A modern meditation
Revisado: 12-20-18
Having read the author's first two books as well, it is a natural continuation of the same thought process, clearly. What was interesting about this was it's timeliness and occasional sence of urgency that is woven through. It's a very good expression of well thought out ideas.
