So so so good! Top book for the year, and essential reading for any coach. We must start with an unbridled belief that those in our care can change.

He's a bit too extreme in his position, but the concept is so important to how we view our growth and potential to change.

Wow. First of all, I am convinced that every human being should read this book. Secondly, if you're at all affected by trauma or interested in helping those you love work through trauma this is a must read.

The author does a really good job of balancing data with engaging stories. he brings you along on his journey of discovery so that you are bought in to the conclusions.

Read the book. You won't regret it.

I really, really love Paul David Tripp’s teaching on parenting. He roots it all in scripture and constantly encourages parents to get to the heart of the issues in both our kids and ourselves.

They also have a great devotional on the Bible app.

That being said, I do feel that the book was a bit lengthy. I’ve listened to his teaching at churches and on YouTube and feel that that format is probably the best format of the content.

How Business and Community Leadership Intersect with Ministry

Wow!

I started reading this book because Zinzendorf is supposedly one of the greatest and more foundational BAM stories of the past few centuries.

I quickly realized that his story has a little of everything: prayer, hardship, giving everything up for the gospel, betrayal, steadfastness, miracles, etc.

Most interestingly, Zinzendorfs story is actually an incredible account of how to build faith-driven communities. He was so strategic about placing himself in community, developing habits, delegating to and developing leaders well, and exemplifying what he preached.

If you want to learn how to develop a healthy, passionate community that sends missionaries, I think Zinzendorf’s story is perfect.

The Moravians also serve as a model for so many other communities. Who knew they influenced names as well known as John Wesley and William Carey?

The bless framework is awesome! Very similar to “Surprise the World” and in fact they both cite a study on blessers vs converters for BAMs in Thailand that is fascinating.

Spoiler alert: the blessers outshined 48:1

I love how the others talk about how people want to be heard. We need to first listen. No one wants your agenda. They want to be heard. So “listen.”

There are so many missional books that talk about eating with others. We simply must orient our ministry around table and blessing more.

THIS IS AMAZING - Upside Down, Biblical Investing

What most impressed me about the book is that it challenges the prevailing perspective of investing and places it within a biblical framework.

We often think of donations as sacred and investments as secular, and there is no end to the number of strategies that believer's would like to force into a biblical context.

Don Simmon's approaches this differently. He first asks what scripture says, then forces our investing strategies to fit scripture.

Don also builds on the growing understanding in disaster relief for impact investing. If impact investing is so critical to improving economies, that is, not just free stuff but investment in profitable business, then how can we, stewards of God's resources, see the resources we have been entrusted with as redeemed to give AND to invest for the glory of God?

A beautiful response to the need amidst cynicism from many

Keller does an incredible job of pointing out the reasons why we do not do justice. Among them, a necessary response to those who would indefinitely engage in evangelism at the expense of doing justice was fitting.

It is important to note that Keller affirms the same as was concluded in the Lausanne issue paper 21: the two go hand in hand.

Keller begins and ends the book in much the same way. He begins by demonstrating that our conviction to help others begins by understanding how much we have been helped, namely, salvation. He ends the book by demonstrating that Jesus is not at all unfamiliar with injustice. He made himself low, and we will do justice if we do the same.

I also really enjoyed the way Keller laid out varying levels of justice and how the church is best for some, business for others, and the individual for others.

Such a refreshing look at prayer

This is now my third favorite book on prayer, and definitely the best written. “The Practice of the Presence of God” and “Unless We Pray” being the top ones.

Tyler has some incredible reflections and a truly humble approach to prayer. I really appreciate how he ties together everyone’s belief and experience of prayer. We all do it. Even atheists.

Tyler spends a lot of time demonstrating the heart of God and intimacy of prayer, and he weaves powerful stories and quotes from other church leaders throughout. He also balances habits with spontaneity and rote prayers with our creative expressions and thoughts before God. I think it’s a good reminder to see value in all of it as Jesus did.

I do highly recommend this book. There is no greater attack on the church today then to make us prayerless. A prayerless people is powerless.

An excellent critique of safetyism & universities

This has to be in the top 2 books I've read this year.

Great critique of safetyism and DSM3. The authors take a look at how universities and our search for knowledge and truth has been hindered by a desire to be safe and homogenized and shun free speech.

There is discussion in microaggressions, trauma, safe spaces, intersectionality, and lots of similar terms that have found their place at the forefront of universities today.

If we want to overcome trauma, often the best way is to confront it. What we are teaching our children is to avoid anything that causes pain and that only furthers the suffering.

Excellent quote: "Prepare the child for the road, not the road for the child."

It is important that we train people to have a high internal locus of control. We should not try to control what happens around us so much as how we react to what happens around us.

The worst thing we can do is create homogenized spaces that promote tribalism and discourage a diversity of opinions. If we want to discover truth, universities should be places where diverse opinions are taught and lively debates are held.
