Historia
From a hectic bazaar in Delhi's old town to a carved wooden temple in Kathmandu's Durbar Square, Jason Smart discovers a wealth of colour amid the chaotic crowds of the Indian Subcontinent. After some tea and biscuits with a Bangladeshi ambassador, he somehow manages to catch Delhi Belly before even setting foot in India. When he does eventually arrive, Jason is buzzed by fearsome insects, hassled by persistent touts and acquires a worrying 'fish eye' growth on his leg. Nonetheless, Jason never loses sight of the fact that his latest adventure is an eye-opener at every turn. From the ...

Beyond Bad
Revisado: 04-15-25
The book appears to have been written by taking shreds of medical stories, and slopping them together by a Zero Intelligence Entity. The "style" was a pathetic and irritating monstrosity. No evidence it was even edited by a human, as the same phrases were used HUNDREDS of times, phrases that medical professionals don't use when recounting their experiences. No wit, no humor, and not interesting. Boring and ridiculous to the point of being stupid. An EPIC FAIL.

Historia
A family doctor with limited surgical experience, Dr. Dave Hnida volunteered for two tours of duty in Iraq - first as a battalion surgeon with a combat unit and then as trauma chief at the busiest Combat Support Hospital (CSH) during the Surge. Like a modern-day M*A*S*H, Dr. Hnida and his team conducted surgery under terrible conditions in a series of tents connected to the occasional run-down building.

Historia
The author of the highly acclaimed Overdiagnosed describes seven widespread assumptions that encourage excessive, often ineffective, and sometimes harmful medical care. You might think the biggest problem in medical care is that it costs too much. Or that health insurance is too expensive, too uneven, too complicated - and gives you too many forms to fill out. But the central problem is that too much medical care has too little value.

Informative, Interesting
Revisado: 09-13-24
Dr. Welch is witty, funny, and explains the important concept that Americans suffer too much health care. We all know of these victims, at which the medical business has caused harm, and at a great cost. For yourself, reconsider screening, invasive procedures, and treatments for "diseases" of which we have no symptoms. Highly recommend.

He recounts the frustrations and rewards of years of research and offers fascinating portraits of his peers as they raced to discover the causes of fatal brain diseases.

Prusiner is brilliant. He has drive, passion, fortitude. He kept going, even when other scientists denigrated his work, and absolutely refused to believe prions existed. Highly recommend this book.

Historia
For 200 years, a noble Venetian family has suffered from an inherited disease that strikes their members in middle age, stealing their sleep, eating holes in their brains, and ending their lives in a matter of months. In Papua New Guinea, a primitive tribe is nearly obliterated by a sickness whose chief symptom is uncontrollable laughter. Across Europe, millions of sheep rub their fleeces raw before collapsing. What these strange conditions share is their cause: prions.

Historia
What won't we try in our quest for perfect health, beauty, and the fountain of youth? Well, just imagine a time when doctors prescribed morphine for crying infants. When liquefied gold was touted as immortality in a glass. And when strychnine - yes, that strychnine, the one used in rat poison - was dosed like Viagra. Looking back with fascination, horror, and not a little dash of dark, knowing humor, Quackery recounts the lively, at times unbelievable, history of medical misfires and malpractices.

Historia
The Nobel laureate Otto Warburg was widely regarded in his day as one of the most important biochemists of the 20th century, a man whose research was integral to humanity’s understanding of cancer. He was also among the most despised figures in Nazi Germany. As a Jewish homosexual living openly with his male partner, Warburg represented all that the Third Reich abhorred. Yet Hitler and his top advisors dreaded cancer, and protected Warburg in the hope that he could cure it.

Historia
It can come in waves - like tidal waves. It changes societies. It disrupts life. It ends lives. As far back as 3000 B.C.E. (the Bronze Age), plagues have stricken mankind. COVID-19 is just the latest example, but history shows that life continues. It shows that knowledge and social cooperation can save lives. Viruses are neither alive nor dead and are the closest thing we have to zombies. Their only known function is to replicate themselves, which can have devastating consequences on their hosts.
